Sure they will, their dirty little secret is exposed. Heck, I'm fine with what they're doing personally, but they're pretty stupid if they never stopped to think that this is a bad PR situation.

Companies should be allowed to pull any scumbag move they want, and then fully reap the consequences of their actions. If the workers and consumers will tolerate it, then so be it. Free markets forever!

WOW so Intel still has blue badges? I use to work at the Dupont plant around 98-99 doing hardware compliance testing for Windows 2000 lol, I had the honor of burning up a lot of sweet hardware for the time and walking around in a lab coat. Never forget when a group of us went to some Chinese resteraunt and started talking about walking out without paying and the waiter wouldn't let us leave our table. They built a city just to sit and rot becuase of that dang law suite to stop Intel from building and selling workstations/servers. Good times, hardware to ERP software... I think I like ERP software more but all in all it was a great job right out of college:)
 
Oh they also had gold badges when I was there, those where CEO's VP's etc etc... You saw them and you ran the other way
 
Working for these large IT companies is sometimes bad idea. The fact they abusing or not fairly treating their employees is well know case among Apple, Foxconn and probably many others. If you work in this enviroment, you shall wake up and leave them. Your human not machine.
 
Is this really a surprise? I'm sure Google does a lot of this stuff. Just like any other large corporate machine.

You maybe right. He tries to play the race card for no reason relevant to the story whatsoever. But it is interesting that Google knows that showing them with an unskilled workforce tarnishes their image of hiring only super genius geek types.
 
This is pretty standard if those people with the yellow badges are doing contract work. They aren't genuine Google employees so of course they aren't going to get the same benefits. They will be whatever benefits their contracting company gives them. HP does this a lot. I know from personal experience.

Come on man, you can't relate anything even close to what goes on in China to working at google in the US. Yes, people with low-skills that have to do very low-skill tasks like scan some book pages into a data base aren't gonna get paid the same as the developers on the team that design Google Maps. Doesn't work that way.

I'd like to point out that an engineer could probably design a machine to do this "Page Scanning" task and convert it over to a completely automated system. I think that would be the funniest most ironic move Google could do to if they take a bunch of flak for this from the stupid big-gunned media outlets. I can see it now, "Google turns book scanning labor force into an efficient, completely automated process!". Then they could really put it in this "Whistle Blower's" face by saying the conversion would save all of those suffering the horrid task! Liberation, Free at Last!!

And from the description, it looks like a transcription service. One of my jobs back in college was maintaining the system of a transcription company. Mostly taking written contracts and documents from US banks and turning them into searcheable databases.

Good grief! Three shifts a day, 200 employees per shift, 6 days a week, and it still took us years to finish the job! You guys are mortgaged to the hilt! Security wise, yeah, that's a big deal. I'm sure you don't want us spreading your bank statements around.

If these guys start demanding and google starts outsourcing, great! More jobs for us!
 
I'm sure there are plenty of people who would like to work for Google even with a structure like that.

Sorry, but how is this a "dirty" little secret? It's a ranking system that EVERY companies have. People get payed different for what they do and how long they've been working. This isn't dirty, this is how things should work.

Not to mention... it's not available to contractors? no shit! Contractors don't actually work for Google, they work for their company to do work for Google.
 
Sounds perfectly normal to me. Not everyone gets the same pay, benefits in the world, much less in the same company. I work in a managers position, therefore I get some benefits that other people do not get. There are people above me that get more benefits than I. What others get or do not get is none of my business. In fact I detest a snob. A snob is typically seen as a person who looks down on others who have less, and this is true. But a person is just as much of a snob if they look down on a person just because they have more than them as well. Regardless of the social/economic standing, if a person looks down on another because of what possessions they have, they are a snob.
 
Most big tech companies operate this way. Yahoo was more or less the same. Perms had purple badges, temps/contractors had yellow and had restricted access. Big deal.

This is how subcontracting is if you weren't aware. I've done it previously. You have some flexibility, but you aren't part of the staff, and you don't get what the staff gets.

This is not newsworthy to me. Maybe it is for the people that have never done subbing though. I dunno. I wasn't shocked by any of this. Maybe too much overreaction on the authors part I dunno. Its not like Google was beating them mercifully in the back room and screaming at them telling them their name was Kunta Kinte.

So, who watched the Royal Wedding (tm)? Thats more newsworthy than this ;)

Ok, so you tell me. How do you differentiated treat people based on their level of responsibility? You have to, afterall. You don't want to treat the CEO of, say, McDonalds with the same expectations or standard of care as a line worker.

And at tech companies, you HAVE to separate people by security clearance. Not just to prevent the dissemination (on purpose or by accident) of sensitive data, but really by law.

So YOU propose a solution for google.

Sounds like typical large business in the US; I guess this guy needs to get out more. The corporate area always gets the cool stuff and the logistics area (the factory) gets to work on a strict schedule with designated breaks every two hours and it's hardly fun work and chances are that the logistics jobs are contracted out.

Mmm, its actually a security measure. While the badges themselves are encoded to allow access to particular buildings/areas, its also a visual indicator so that if you're not in a place you're supposed to be folks will know. Its pretty damn standard in any large tech company. :rolleyes:

This thing shouldn't have gotten any attention at all, because most people won't watch the video, and instead ready only the conclusions written by blog sites.

The whole idea is ridiculous. People will always have different privileges based on their levels of importance, contribution, influence and so forth. That's normal. The idea that the way google has simplified this is a form of class warfare is absurd. We have much larger, more obvious forms of class warfare and discrimination out there without nitpicking google.
