Google Has Four Separate Classes for Workers?

Soo..

This guy is Surprised that "Contractors" for another company and "interns" don't get access to the same "luxuries" as full google employees?

I am not sure which surprises me more..that this is a new concept to him? or that it appears to be a new concept to some of you.

Good grief. This guy wasn't a Google employee, he was a contractor. So are the Yellow Badges. He should talk to his real employer if he is unsatisfied with his benefits.

Why was it important for this a-hole to mention that the security guy was white? He implying racism, but he is really the one making judgments by appearance.

Google was well within it rights to fire him. Hopefully no other company makes the mistake of hiring him.

He wasn't doing it for his benifit, he was doing it for the benifit of the lower class of worker. This was a selfless act.

Just because it is an old idea doesn't mean there isn't a new one that is more equal and fair.

Just because it is an old idea doesn't mean there isn't a new one that is more equal and fair.

this IS the fair system. a contract data entry person is not equal to the president of the department. I'm impressed there's only 4 different levels. Clearly the levels of access are working because google clearly can't trust emo contractors like this.

IF there was a story here it'd be IF the poor poor poor day laborers had no shot at working hard and working their way up. But all this f-tard is trying to do is paint google as evil and the 8 dollar an hour employee as honorable.

that shit doesn't really fly any more. global warming is bs too btw. (troll)

Just because it is an old idea doesn't mean there isn't a new one that is more equal and fair.

WHY should it be equal? Equal doesn't mean better. In fact, I don't want the underlings (even when it's me) being treated the same as someone at the top of the company.

With greater responsibility come greater rewards. Any other way does not seem to make any sense...

Wow the socialists are out in force in this thread. There will always be classes in everything in life. It is the way things are, some people are just better than others at doing things of value.

I suppose the groundskeepers at your local MLB park should have all the same perks as the players as well.

I weep for our future as a race when people are so stoopid. You have to earn things in life, they are not a right!

Wow, I am more impressed by how this discussion thread repeats the same mantra, but each repetition introduces an idea that is incorrect based on what the video showed us.
1) Man giving video is a contractor and has benefits less than what a Google employee has but significantly greater benefits than another group of 'yellow' contractors.
2) The man filmed this during his lunch break and no Google resources were used. The statement that Google time and resources were used was to give a rational for firing him.
3) The man had permission to do this in his spare time from a supervisor.
4) The "yellow" contractors are forbidden from making basic interactions with non yellows. Their start time 4am and end time make 2:30pm, make accidental social interaction less likely.

If this is all true, I don't think I have ever heard of a company isolating another group that thoroughly. Even in top secret environments there isn't that level of isolation and I say this has someone whose company does such work. Most of those people looked like they were fresh out of high school, so I doubt this was any 'secret' or sensitive work. This just sounds like Google being overly sensitive about having non-Stanford grads on the campus.

I'll be honest and say I'd rather be a colored badge wearing grunt at Google than to be working where I'm at now. For one the pay's probably significantly better, and working at Google even as a fucking toilet bowl cleaner would probably carry more weight towards a next job than my current SUPERVISOR title does.

I feel ya bro!

Wait. SO this guy is surprised he lost his job?
Lets see...
- He works on one of the most secure business campuses in the world.
- For one of the most security-minded businesses in the world. (well, as a sub Ker)
- With video cameras, which inherently represent security risks, doing a job for which I guarantee he signed multiple forms prohibiting this kind of activity.
- He used company material for personal purposes during work hours.
- To interview employees about confidential work that has all kinds of issues around it, including on-going litigation. Employees whose work is sensitive enough that they don't get anything that can allow for material to leave their building (mentioned backpacks, phones and flashdrives)
- And then apparently lied about NOT having footage while mocking the person confronting him about his actions.

This guy's a moron, and if anyone is surprise, shocked or appalled about Google's response, then they have no idea what corporate america is about...

This.

I mean wow, the guy was asking for it with what he said in those emails. The "after an hour I thought that Google Security had taken this as enough" is such a snide bullshit remark. With all the class, race, task and benefits philosophical bullshit he added in in his response email as to his "out-of-the-blue" curiosity, it cracks me up. He was asking for this to happen to him guys, come on lets get real!

O, and lets take a look at the 5 possible ulterior motives behind his so-called "normal" curiosity for what his neighbors do.

Reasons 1-5. He said he was going to quit in 2-months anyway to pursue a graduate degree in philosophy.

Hmmm, read through that sentence one more time please. Does no one see his motive to make this a huge fucking deal from the get-go? I guarantee that if he had not been reprimanded for his actions so quickly, we would be reading a huge BS filled grad level philosophy project a year from now.

This guy had every intention to make this his "claim-to-fame" philosophy project once he enrolled. I have no sympathy for what happened to him. He asked for it.

This guy is smart. Equal treatment for all is what people like me like to call progress. Remember the saying absolute power corrupts absolutly? Equality prevents this by giving everybody the same amount of power. You cannot trust people with power to give you equality. You can only give it to yourself. People with power only want more power and that is just the nature of the beast. We are all the same, every one of us. Exactly equal in every catagory. Every person should have all the oppurtunities everybody else has.

Some people are better at things than other people. Shackle me not with the chains of mediocrity!

Yep. And like I said, he was probably going to paint Google in a negative light, possibly even calling them racist for treating the data entry workers, who are apparently mostly "people of color," different from the other employees.

He noticed most of the people in the yellow badge only building are "people of color". He is mad that Google doesn't give the following perks to the people working in the yellow badge building:

1)google bikes
2)google shuttle bus
3)free food
4)free google talks with free signed books by the author
5)walk other places on campus, obviously security sensitive issue
6)backpacks
7)thumbdrives
8)mobile devices, whatever that is
8)he is also upset they couldn't socialize with non yellow badged employees, obviously because they work in off limits areas that are security sensitive

He is mad security stopped him from video taping and interviewing employees.

He may also be upset that he himself did not get:
1)ski trips
2)Disney vacations
3)stock options
4)holiday cash bonuses

He is also seems upset they leave work at the same time on a 4am-2pm shift, or he comes off as being upset by it, I can't really tell.

He thinks Google isn't treating the yellow badge employees fairly. Maybe he feels it is a little piece of Google China right here in the USA?

My cynicism tells me his intention was to dig for dirt on Google. I am sure he probably would have made a nice name for himself if he could manage to expose Google as being evil by getting some inside dirt straight from the workers in the yellow badge building. He says he was going to quit in 2 months to go to grad school anyway. He must have presumed that since yellow badge workers didn't get the same perks as him that their lives must be a living hell.

I didn't hear him say anything about bad pay, stressful working conditions, or a lack of medical coverage. He has probably had a very privileged life and has no experience working with large companies.

This too, Perfectly put.

Grow up. Work is not a happy social fun pace. Different jobs get different perks, welcome to the real word.

This guy is a self important idiot who doesnt see anything wrong with asking sensitive questions of his employers. Not very bright.

MOST employers would have fired him too, ask any HR director.

"thats not really philosophical" what an egghead douche.

Ya I wish I would have watched the video first, instead of read through some of it. My fault for sounding dumb. Didn't realize he was a temp or contract worker. I guess he got what was deserved to him. I hope he read the fine print when he signed on.

But you also need to have a job that is what you want to do, er... one that makes you happy i guess is what I mean. My job for example was to fix computers for minimum wage at 40hrs per work.(First pc job wasn't complaining.) I liked it.
What I do not get is if he was so unhappy with his work why stay?? (Besides the economy)

And Spire I am in the "real world" have been since I been out of college first year. It is ridiculous what some people deal with. Yes it was my fault for not reading the entire write up, that i sounded stupid. I should have put TL;DR all of it. But I can have my idea on what I think is right too. And corporate America is not right.

Precisely, points 1-4 are factually correct, and because of them I don't understand why Google fired the contractor. He didn't do anything he was not supposed to, he received clearance for all of it. Evidently, Google has something to hide about the yellow-badge workers since they took a simple video-taping so seriously. I'd be interested to find out more about this.

I have worked in the past for companies thet had temps and perms working the same job for different pay scales even though they had the same job. I believe the guy was trying to dig up some dirt and he obviously lied about not haveing the tape in any other format since we were watching the video. Was He stupid? yes did he give up his Job yes, did he know better of course he did he said he signed a non-disclosure agreement.

I do not like hearing the people of color stuff, Because if the only people that wanted the temp mostly unskilled work they were doing was african-american people and no caucasions so be it. There shouldn't be a distinction due to race unless you cannot get a job unless you are a certain race. BTW the video I was watching I say every race coming out of that building.

It's like saying it's wrong to hire unskilled mexicans to do unskilled labor, since they could give the unskilled work to the guy who is skilled and don't want the job anyway.
Sometimes I think some people want to find something to fuss about, Think if nobody wanted to do yellow badge work then no one would do it.

waa waaa boo hoo Next your going to wine that people make more money than you. Welcome to capitalism. Reward is based on your value*
*Value = aggregate of skin color/ethnicity, gender, religion and political party affiliation.

This is like Star Trek, red shirts are the first to die, red badges are the first to get fired...

Are you a moron? Any large corporation has concern when a contract employee is filming areas of a building he is not supposed to. Sure his boss said it was ok. We have no idea what really happened only one side and that side is not very compelling. From the emails alone it sounds like everything was going to be ok until he started talking about unequal treatment. Who would not fire him after that point?!?!?!? You have a guy filming and interviewing other contract workers and already told you he is documenting the unequal treatment of them.

Wow...just Wow!

Welcome to the real world. People and their jobs are not equal. Imagine that! While Google may not have handle the situation in the best manner, the guy was obviously just try to cause strife and dig dirt. The yellow tags are more than welcome to quit anytime they want and find a different/better job or work their way up through the ranks at Google.

Free ride anyone? Nope. Get to work!

Its pretty amazing how easy people conjure up ideas of racism and mistreatment. These people are probably highschool diploma contract workers. They scan books and preform other data entry tasks. Sure google could be nice and give them free lunch but why? Its called business people.

My guess about keeping these people under the radar is less about mistreating them and more about keeping company information secret. Who knows what kind of data entry they are preforming. Could be for a new product.... Its probably easier to tell these people to call their manager when someone starts asking questions.

This guy is grade A douche imo.

I didn't have anything against the guy till the last comment to bert.

"That's not really philosophy"

fucking know-it-all douchebag. He got fired for being a retard on a soapbox looking down his nose at people he perceived as lesser than himself. Screw him.

I think everyone who feels they are mistreated by their employer should go out and start their own business and show that corporation what they missed out on by not giving all the free stuff you wanted.

You're right. It is clearly the correct decision to fire and attempt to silence who perceives and reports a given situation as unethical rather than to set the record straight. Oh wait, what if something unethical WAS going on...

You know, now that I think of it, when I worked as a software developer for a huge investment bank several years back, they didn't give me access to private jets and helicopter flights! I demand justice NOW!

How is any of this all that surprising? No matter how altruistic a business may appear to be, they're all about one thing, the bottom line.

This is nothing new. Every large corporation have class of workers differentiate by the color of the badges. Typically contractor worker have a different badge color then regular employee and they don't get all the perks of regular employees. But having 4 classes is a lot more then other companies. We all know companies are run like a monarchy.

Do tell what was unethical? Contract blue-collar labor do not get the same perks as google engineers or other full-time employees... I guess the guy was trying to make some racism allegation but thats just a joke.

We dont give any of our contractors at my work benefits, you are a contractor hired to do a set amount of work.

I don't understand the point of the boring monotonous sounding guy in the video.

Same thing with my office. We have our employees, security(contracted), facilities department(mostly contracted, think janitors and such) and then "other" contractors. None of the contractors are entitled to any extra benefits. The entire point of being a contractor(or sub contracted) is that another company is paying you or your employer for your labor, that's it. It doesn't make you a full time employee of the company who is paying for your labor.

As far as getting fired for videotaping employees on your lunchbreak, I'd probably get fired from my job as well. Why? Because the policies these large companies have about recording things usually still apply when you're off the clock but still on their property. It also means I'm not allowed to go flapping my mouth and showing photos of which employees or contractors have access to what. As long as google isn't violating any labor laws(like work hours, child labor, hazardous conditions, etc.) they can do what they want. Nothing is forcing those poor sods to work there with yellow badges.

Meh, I know a shit load of people working for Foxconn that would kill to be a yellow badge at google. Hell, I know a shit load here in the US that would also.
Welcome to real life. Where most of the employed are just happy when they pay check get there on time or even to get one at all.
Backpacks? Trips? Thumb Drives?
FFS At my last job. (Not Contract) We thought we had a great perk when we got doughnuts on some mornings.
Fucking privileged little shit should try real work for a change.
Well we know a contractor for Google has an opening now.
Resume Sent. :)

Attention all precious little snow flakes. Your not entitled to jack shit. Welcome to the world your idiot parents tried to hide from you. You do not have the social skills to make it here. Suck it up and deal with it.

Definitely looks like a guy that wanted to make a quick buck/name for himself as some supposed defender of others when the whole thing seemed really shady to me (I did read the entire posting). This guy is the one that comes off as being unethical in my view trying to make the entire thing look racially motivated. As others have said, as long as Google isn't breaking any labor laws those people are agreeing to work there and get paid a certain amount. If they weren't happy with the arrangement, they're free to leave. There are a lot more shittier jobs for unskilled labor than scanning books all day.

I don't cry that I can't eat in the executive dinning room at my company because I'm just a worker bee. Rank does come with privilege. Any benefits for contracted employees would be provided by their employer anyways, not by the facility they are working at.

The guy is trying to sensationalize the whole thing. It's so obvious.

Damn troll.

He wasn't doing it for his benifit, he was doing it for the benifit of the lower class of worker. This was a selfless act.

Selfless my backside. He was doing things guaranteeing he would be fired. There's nothing selfless about that. Just stupid.
WHat was he going to "expose"? That a bunch of lower-skill, lower-responsibility contract workers from some temp agency get less benefits? Because they belong to some union they leave at different times to cut down on traffic on a closed campus?

Please.

exactly the same thing goes on at blizzard. red badges are treated pretty much like sweatshop workers while blue badges get carte blanche

The yellow badge people have jobs. They are hourly contract employees. Do they get paid less and have fewer benefits than the skilled engineers who work for Google? Of course. This is really a non-issue. And their race should not factor into this equation no matter what. Skill level > skin color, no matter where you work.

I've had several contract jobs as an engineer at companies since getting my BSEE from electrical engineering to consulting to working at AMD. Guess what, no benefits and no perks. You do your work and go home. After your 40 hours is up, yes you can charge time and a half, but they don't really like that anyway. Probably why I don't work at those places anymore.
