Droid

Would it be possible to get this phone, then cancel the extra smartphone plans after 1 month? I really want this phone, but I can't be paying all the smartphone charges, and I really don't require internet and email and what not on my phone.

I think there would be some kind of cancellation charge involved with that.

Then why get the phone? The internet, data, email, etc is kind of the point of a smartphone.

The answer is no the phone has to be provisioned with a data plan or it will not be allowed to operate on the network and you would incure a cancellation fee as a result.

Take the Imageo for example, it wholesales for 580.00 US dollars and Verizon sells it to you for 200 after instant rebate. The reason for the cancelation fee is that the carrier , in this case, Verizon cannot recoup thier investment in you and what they hoped would be reoccuring revenue and therefore they wack you 175 and the agent like me 340 and change. They never loose money. If you were lucky enough to circumvent the system , Verizon would still be insulated since the Agent gets the shaft. The carriers never pay , its the customer or the agent or both. So do me a favor ( Hollinger) and all of the other agents out there. Buy a f(*&6ing phone for what it was designed for , pay for the service or dont bother otherwise the little guy like you gets hurt not the big guy "the carrier"

I apologize to all the spelling and grammer nazi's its late and I am tired

It's kinda like servers in a restaraunt. Dine and ditch customers think they are sticking it to the establishment when really some poor server gets to pay the bill on the customer's behalf. My wife had this happen to her once while we were dating, I thought it was BS. Her boss better be glad I half-way across the country working 12's.

ha okay... i was just wondering... because I get some internet in my normal plan already... i don't ever use my email account... and I would want this because it has a really good os with better applications and what not... where the only other phone I can go with that competes for verizon is the rogue... which I'm pretty sure is going to be blown out of the water by this thing.

That's ok. I could see what was coming and skipped the paragraph. ;)

So who's ready for giant laser beam robots in the shape of DROID's marching down their streets shooting GIANT LASER BEAMS from their eyeballs like cylons down into the homes of every iPhone user rendering them...well, pretty much the same as they've always been!

I wish this was a GSM phone. i hate phones that are locked to one carrier.

It will be GSM eventually, I've read it a few times. They will need it to be when they try to sell it outside the US.

And so long as Rogers get's one in Canada you'll have hope of getting one with US 3g bands on AT&T.

AFAIK, the Verizon Droid is not a world phone. Engadget, and the usual suspects did post up an article showing a "euro" version of the then Sholes going through the FCC however.

It'll appear in GSM form, hopefully sooner rather than later. I'm salivating just thinking about this phone...

Dude! , I love you man..........:p

All info about the Droid is now availible on the Motorola site.

http://www.motorola.com/Consumers/U...d-Services/Mobile-Phones/Motorola-DROID-US-EN

After reading that it only has the 550mhz cpu instead of the 1ghz I might just choose the HTC Desire since it will likely be cheaper and has HTC Sense. Of course I'll wait till I can hold this in my hand and see the prices before choosing. If it really is a nice phone to hold and use over the Desire then I'll probably buy it.

edit: According to a user on phandroid this doesn't use an ARM processor but a OMAP processor and a dedicated gpu and I just read it on hte boygeniusreport hands-on so I guess it's not comparable. you can ignore my commenst above. The Droid does look better now. Plus it's only about 3mm thicker and wider than the iphone 3gs, a lot smaller than I though it would be fore a slidder.

Seriously, this has to be one of my favorite flics of all time. I've seen it twice and just snagged the DVD.

The Droid and HTC's Desire hit 2 very different demographics...those that like to be able to function when typing and those that don't mind their entire fucking screen disappearing before their very eyes. Have you ever tried to edit a post on Hardforum w/ an iPhone? It's unpossible. ;)

Also, I see no compass.
Did the G1 have a compass? It wouldn't be possible to do the Google Street thing wo/ one, right? I also see Dual LED flash instead of the rumored Xenon and what looks like a pre installed 16 GB SDHC card instead of built in 16 GB capacity. Oh well, we still get the 3.7" WVGA w/ WiFi on VZW. :D

Sexy time!

Awe, c'mon, there's a date there! November 9th, or November 2009!? Think of the poor sap who got the package!

Rumored $599 out of contract... - Ouch, this is going to suck if my deal doesn't go through...

Just curious about something...I understand buying the phone and not wanting a contract, but are you putting a Verizon sim you already have in it?..the reason i ask is looking at the plans on their site I cant see any month to month plan that includes Data...only plans that require a contract, so what would be the point?...Help me out here if i am reading something wrong.
thanks

MY BAD...if you select any wireless plan there is an option to do month to month, one year or two year contract...Problem Solved.

hopefully they announce a date on a GSM version soon. this phone looks a little too big for the pocket, I know having large screens is nice but I wonder if this is too large?

I have big pockets. :) I had an iPhone for a couple of weeks and kept it in an OtterBox case, which bulked it up even more, and didn't have problems carrying it. But I could see a phone like this being a pain to deal with if your pants double as an ad campaign for your nads.

Actually it's only about 2mm thicker and 3mm wider.

After reading all the new stuff and seeing clear pictures I'm actually getting really excited about this phone.

Same here, I can't wait to get my hands on it.

That's a great preview! I'm quite annoyed this isn't starting on GSM, but I'll just have to wait.

This phone looks like an absolute shoe-in.

I'd say shoe-in if I wasn't concerned about plan pricing. Part of the reason I wanted to go to Sprint was stellar pricing compared to Verizon. We'll see what happens, but this phone looks amazing.

That's true, I was considering switching to Verizon just because of this phone, but the pricing seems quite expensive.....

Oh, don't worry about the pricing. I've been getting owned for years. After a few months, you barely notice the...oh hey...what's that...

No, but really, at least here in AZ, well and in NW Indiana from 02 to 05 VZW was tough to beat. I remember having to go outside my apt and into the parking lot to make a call on TMO. I hate to fight those fuckers to get out of contract too!

Then out here I tried Sprint and the Pre because they "roam" on Verizon and get the "same" coverage. Not true. Robot voices, dropped calls, missing voicemails. More frustration in 3 days than 3 months w/ Verizon.

Yes, I pay more for the plan, but I just don't deal w/ bullshit. I dial a number, it goes through. People call me, they get me. I can't even remember the last time I've dropped a call, seriously it's been months, maybe 6 months, a year? It just doesn't happen. And the call quality at least on my Razr's out freakin' standing.

For anal pricks like myself, this shit matters and I'm willing to pay for it. My Tour(s) mostly went back because they all sounded like shit and according to BGR the new Moto still has it where it counts in that dept so I'm pumped.

Slightly OT, but what sort of 3G speeds do you NON VZW guys get? One thing where I do feel they're lacking's speed. Typically the Storm would hit about 4 to 500 Kbps in this speedtest app. I don't know, maybe that's just my area or PHX in general, but a lot of the Engadget or was it BGR? speed tests showed higher speeds for ATT, Sprint, and TMO.

I just hope verizon doesn't make some high priced plan this specific phone must have. Hopefully it is just a $20 smart phone price like other WinMo phones.

...$30 smart phone price plan like their other WinMo phones. Nah, I doubt it. This one seems like it's all about the phone. I bet it'll be $299 - $100 rebate, maybe $100 instant online like always w/ the $30 smartphone plan and $6 or $7 insurance just like the rest of em.
