Droid

Boy Genius has a hands on with the Droid - http://www.boygeniusreport.com/2009/10/19/motorola-droid-hands-on/

This phone looks like its going to be the best on the market and should give the iphone a run for its money. I just wish it had HTC's Sense. Now they just need to release the price which better be $200 with no rebate if they're aiming to compete with the iphone.

Phone looks pretty good but I'd rather wait for a GSM android phone with some decent horsepower. Getting tired/bored of my iPhone though so I really have no problems switching if I can get 3G+ a kick ass phone somewhere else.

If this keyboard has a typo and it's your fault, I'm going to be pissed.

Also, I don't live in New Jersey Verizon, lose the gold trim on the game pad.

The fear of Verizon making the phone crappy will hold many people back. If there hasn't been so much as a preview, demonstration, or publication showing that all features are in place and not gimped then I'll probably pass.

The good news is that this is a "Google Experience" phone. Essentially, this is a written agreement that Verizon cannot gimp the phone in any way shape or form.

The bad news is that it won't have motoblur or any other cool UI as far as we know. Hopefully it will include motoblur and we'll find out when the real reviews come in.

I am definitely picking this up..dropped my Iphone long ago and its been Android ever since.

dear god am I looking forward to this phone. my three+ year old LG VX8600 is finally starting to die a slow death. my only worry is battery life- this phone seems to be doing a lot hardware and feature-wise. I'm really hoping this won't end up being one of those recharge-every-6-to-9-hours deals like I've been hearing for the Hero.

and to think, I was getting all set to switch to Sprint too.

Battery life will suck. That's a guarantee. Name of the game with any modern smartphone.

I used the Hero all weekend with only a charge from Friday night. Today I came home with 40% after a full days use, several phone calls over bluetooth, wifi use and so forth. I put my phones to use at work, it's not any worse than my 3gs and maybe a little better.

I lose enough time talking to you yahoos as it is. That last thing I need are people attacking me on my phone. The smartphone is for web surfing in the shitter and finding the nearest XX on the go, nothing more.

Wishing I knew about this before buying my enV Touch. Oh well, I can only imagine what awesome Verizon Android phone will be out in 2 years. :)

So is this phone;

The one coming out next for Verizon, their first Android phone ? Or is the Motorola Droid a future 2010 phone ?

As of now nothing has been confirmed as far as which phones are coming out and when and is all speculation at this point. We do know that we will be seeing 2 android phones on Verizon this year and most likely in November. We should go ahead and assume the Droid is going to be released this year and soon. The countdown on the Droid website ends at midnight on Oct. 30. Oct. 30 is either going to be the reveal date, pre-order date (or both) and a long shot that it could be the release date (I doubt this one).

The 2nd android phone is assumed to be a redesigned HTC Hero but mine and others' theory is that it will be called the HTC Desire since there is a HTC Desire Android phone in Verizon's computer now. I would assume it's going to launch this year as well and probably along with the Droid or Storm 2.

Ughhh. It looks like there is going to be a Droid "Lite" called the Calgary coming to Verizon as well this year. http://www.boygeniusreport.com/2009...otos-verizons-second-motorola-android-device/

There goes my hope of the Droid being priced competitively with the iPhone. I was hoping the Droid would come priced at $200 at the most after a rebate. I'm now thinking its going to be closer to $250 or $300 but I pray that I'm wrong. I don't really see the Calgary being less than $150 so why make the Droid $200?

edit: Phandroid.com is also reporting that the countdown timer on the Droid website has been pushed up to Oct. 28 at 12:00 AM.

And the Motorola Droid is this phone ?

And that means it is due soon ? Like to launch the Verizon/Google relationship in November I assume ? And doesn't the Motor Droid come standard with 2.0 ?

What is approx package for Verizon unlimited plans ? I am sure better than ATT raping me every month of $180

Yes, the link you posted is the Droid. The Calgary looks similar but has 1 less touch button on the front and doesn't have the gold pad thing.

As for plans, this is the best explanation for Verizon's pricing I've seen anywhere.
Ok cheapest plan to get a "smartphone" for single line plans is as follows:
(note: Smartphones do not use the connect or premium plan tiering. They will always be considered a Select(Voice plus Unlimited Text) or Basic line(Voice only))

Unlimited email and web - 29.99
450 min = $70 total ( thats with email and web included 450 is 39.99 plus email and web package)
900 min = $90
1350 min = $110
Unlimited min = $130

Unlimited Data for Smartphones is $44.99 and the difference is the ability to connect up with Exchange/BES servers and be able to sync contacts, appointments, calendars, etc. wirelessly. Add $15 to ur above minute plan if you require these features. Most personal users do not require this package.

To add texting, add the following amount onto your minute package
250 messages = $5
Unlimited VZW/500 to non VZW customers = $10
Unlimited VZW/1500 to non VZW customers = $15
Unlimited = $20 (select plan)
(Did not show Unlimited VZW/5000 to non VZW customers pricing as it the same price as getting completely unlimited texting(select) for single line users)

Yes family plans you can mix and match
Premium plans and connect plans are for use on "dumb phones" ex. Rogue, Env Touch, Rival, etc. Not putting these phones down but they are not catergorized as smartphones

Start with the basics...

700- 69.99 (60 for primary line, 9.99 for secondary line)
1400- 89.99 (80 for primary line, 9.99 for secondary line)
2100- 109.99 (100 for primary line, 9.99 for secondary line)
3000- 149.99 (140 for primary line, 9.99 for secondary line)
4000- 199.99 (190 for primary line, 9.99 for secondary line)
Unlimited- 199.98 (99.99 for primary line, 99.99 for secondary line)

Now to add texting you can add the same type of packages as I stated above with the exception of the unlimited is a bit different:
250 messages - $5 for each line its added to
Unlimited VZW/500 to non VZW customers - $10 for each line its added to
Unlimited VZW/1500 to non VZW customers - $15 for each line its added to
Unlimited VZW/5000 to non VZW customers - $20 for each line its added to
Unlimited (Select Familyshare Plan) - $30 (covers every line on the familyshare plan).

Now heres where things start to change. You've got a couple different options for data. These options are for "dumb phones"
$10 = 25mb of usage for each phone its on
$20 = 75mb of usage for each phone its on
These packages are really for the people who are not looking to be on a connect or premium plan because they dont do much texting and therefore dont want to jump to higher plans because it forces you to go through that select phase which is $30 dollars.
If you are on a select plan, going to connect or premium is easy
Connect (Phone must be connect capable which means it can connect to the mobile web/Get it now)- add $10 for each line you want unlimited data on (also gives you access to mobile email)
Premium (phone must be premium capable which means can access internet, videos on demand, and VZNavigator) - add $20 for each line you want unlimited data on (also gives you access to mobile email, Vcast videos on demand, and VZNavigator.)

So here is a scenario on the mixing and matching now that Ive got that out of the way. say you have 4 phones on a 1400 min plan. You come in and upgrade your phones. Mom gets an EnV 3, Dad gets an EnV Touch, grandma gets a knack, and you want a smartphone. 3 of you use a lot of texting so you decide on unlimited texting. Now mom would like to be able to watch videos on her phone, look at email, surf the web. She is also not very good with directions so she would also like the VZNavigator. Dad just would like to check his emails every once in awhile and pull up news and stuff on his phone. Grandma would just like to be able to call and get ahold of someone. You wanting a smartphone want to be able to do it but dont need VZNavigator. You would build your plan like this. Put mom on 1400 premium for the primary line is $130 (1400 at $80 plus $30 unl texting plus $20 for premium capabilities) Dad would be added as a connect secondary (plus $20) Grandma would be added as a select secondary (plus $10) and you would be also added as a select secondary at $10. Then you would add on your corresponding smartphone data package. In this case were using the $30 email and web. add it all together and you have $200 and a plan that fits everyones needs.

Nah, it's really simple for those like myself. :D I'm single, entire family's on Verizon, don't talk a lot on the phone, don't txt much, and have no need for exchange. So basically, I'm the 450 + data + 250 txt + insurance + tax = owned for $85ish monthly. Wow...that sucks when I add it up. Oh well. Love me some Verizon. :D

He left out one thing. You can add another 30 dollars for tethering. This allows you to tether your smart phone to your laptop as a broadband modem.

I'm really excited for Droid, but only when it comes to GSM carriers.

But that's what makes this phone so special. CDMA, and especially Verizon users have been shafted for years. You guys have had your iPhone for 3 years now. We've had nothing. This is OUR TIME!

hahaha...I hear you. I'm not interested in the iPhone, I've got my G1 since day 1. I just wanted to have an evolution of the G1 (better, stronger, faster, google experience...), which is what I see this phone as.

It looks like a great handset.

EDIT: Also, something I forgot to mention, I think Verizon is entirely screwing up the marketing of this phone. I like the iDoesn't ads, but the Droid and strangely sci-fi ad campaign seems oddly polarizing.

Oh, I see. So you're not satisfied w/ having 1 awesome phone or even 2 awesome phones, you want a revised edition for an awesome phone you already have. Freakin' GSMer's.

lol you make me feel like a jerk! Anyway, be happy, this phone looks like a straight up success for all those that are tied to Verizon.

What this phone can do was sci-fi just a few short years ago :D

hah...most definitely, but you can say the same thing about the iPhone.

I just feel like it's very odd, as one of the first slam-dunk great smart phones to hit Verizon, that they are going to give it such a strange marketing campaign.

Strange = people talking about it like we are. Thus it is successful in the eyes of the Ad types

I don't really think so though -- the forum-going, tech-focused males aren't exactly a difficult demographic to hit. We do our own research, so presumably if your product is good then we'll buy it. I'm thinking about people more like my friends and family that are less tech inclined that would be totally turned off by the near terminator/cylon type marketing.

Especially when you consider this to be a competitor to the iPhone, it makes things all the more odd. Anyway, I won't go on about it any longer, I just want it to come to a GSM carrier!

On thing is for sure, I am willing to the bet the ads are making those that are coming off of contract and considering making a move to the IPhone are now going to wait just a little bit longer. Even our local news mentioned the droid ad. It has taken on a life of its own.

theres a whole lot of people who already ditched the iphone and went to sprint hero with a everything data plan of $70.

I hear you , those are the ATT customers. There are alot of Verizon customers , like with any other carrier, that just want to be popular and were waiting for thier contract to end so they could join the other sheep irrespecitve of network coverage. Many , not knowing that those sheep may have already moved on. Those are the customers that I was referring to.
