I know I'm a recent Hero buyer, but don't think I'm not keeping my eye on this while I'm in my 30 day trial.
I like my Hero, Sprints pricing but am interested to see what Verizon's bringing to the table. Even if it doesn't sway me, I'm excited to see Android development.

I've been following this as well. I'm with a Verizon now using a dumbphone and have been looking into switching to Sprint for the cheaper service and the Hero. Now that the droid is coming out and Verizon is also getting the Hero that looks better I'm waiting a little bit longer. I just want to make sure they're not going to come locked down and using crappy Verizon custom firmware like all other Verizon smartphones. The crappy options from Verizon are the only things keeping me from having already getting some kind of smartphone and just using my ipod touch over WiFi as a middle point.

It's a guarantee that I'll be dumping my iPhone for an Android. It's just a matter of which phone I choose. If the HTC HD2 were running Android, then I'd be in cell phone heaven.

The fear of Verizon making the phone crappy will hold many people back. If there hasn't been so much as a preview, demonstration, or publication showing that all features are in place and not gimped then I'll probably pass.
There's speculation about the countdown on the site. I set my clock to Oct 29 11:59pm like others did, and reloaded the page. The countdown ended on October 30 exactly. Some think that this means Oct 30 pre-orders begin, others think the phone will be released. We'll learn more in the days to come I'm sure.

Yeah, that's the thing. The only thing anyone knows about the Hero is a press picture with the CEOs of Google and Verizon and a confirmed rumor that is coming in Nov. And all we know about the the droid is from leaked images and a leaked startup video. As far as the Hero is concerned I want to be sure that it's either going to be the same as the Sprint version software wise with fixed bugs (not sleeping due to dialer bug mainly) or with donut or eclair version of andriod. None of that crappy custom Verizon firmware.

From what the leaks have shown of the Droid it looks like its going to be pretty stock. I'm sure in both cases Verizon will include GetItNow and that's probably about it. If they do add all kinds of crap I'll be sure to look into loading custom ROMs.

I think Droid looks stock is because Motorola hasn't updated Motoblur for 2.0. I would think that they will eventually release Blur or another UI enhancement to Android 2.0.
Even if they don't I think 2.0 looks much better than Android 1.x. I still really dig the sense integration, and after watching some Cliq videos I'm not to impressed. It's better than stock, but lacks what I like in sense. I'm sure that some will prefer motoblur and that's ok, it has what they want.

I'm thinking Motorola is going to have to have Motoblur ready for release on 2.0 since Verizon is already advertising the Droid as having 2.0 and IMO Android is a little too bland to sell well when you compare it to Sense on Android or WinMo.

As far as I can tell, HTC has done about everything right when Sense. I don't have any hands on experience with it but from everything I've read in reviews and on forums and seen in hands on videos Sense is miles ahead of the iPhone, WebOS, WinMo and Android stock configuration. I'd say WebOS is the closest but still lacking.

I was just doing a little reading and it looks like the HTC Hero on Verizon could be the Desire or there could be a different android powered phone. The only think I could really find is that Verizon has a phone in their system called the HTC Desire powered by Google and that there is a HTC Desire that passed through the FCC. As far as I know Verizon has only 2 android phones coming and the Droid is one for sure, so the other one would be the Desire since its in the computer. Hopefully it's just a renamed Hero even though the Desire is a dumb name.

Oooh nice...but is this going to be enough to get me to change my wanton desire for the Nokia N900....Android 2.0 is soooo tempting though...but qwerty....oh...the choice! the decisions!

:D

Anything anyone wants to know's already or will be in the HoFo thread. Granted the 1st 2 threads were train wrecks to follow on a daily basis, jumping nearly 20 pages in the space of a day. But the 1st post has a bunch of helpful information.

Please don't fuck this up Moto. After reports of the Cliq's screen feeling "resistive" and the keyboard sucking...well, I'm not getting sucked into the hype again like I did w/ the Storm. <---FYI, not an iphone killer

Still, adverts like this put a fat smile on my face. :D

Based on the meeeting that i was at. They are going all out open source. No worries

Do you work for Verizon? Want to leak a little info? :D ;)

I am an agent and there is so much more I wish that I could say that is not phone model specific but exciting with regard to Android

The commercials will offer hints as time marches on

Yeah, someone's gonna run to Verizon and scream, "Hey, I just saw a bunch of Android info on this [H]ardForum website. This guy named jacuzz1 told everyone all our secrets!!!!!!!"

I was just reading Gizmodo and saw that Verizon actually had to license the name from Lucasfilm. I can't believe that a) Lucasfilm can own the rights to word like droid and b) that Verizon couldn't come up with a different name. Oh well, good for George Lucas making even more money in a down economy, lol. Apparently the tidbit about the trademark belonging to Lucasfilm is in the small print of the commercial.

so new devices next month? I guess it would be smart to hold off on buying a hero then?

Not a bad idea, but there is the 30 day trial. I'll be within it and I'm sure most of not all information will be available for the Hero, Moment, and Droid before my 30 days is up.

Boy Genius has a hands on with the Droid - http://www.boygeniusreport.com/2009/10/19/motorola-droid-hands-on/

This phone looks like its going to be the best on the market and should give the iphone a run for its money. I just wish it had HTC's Sense. Now they just need to release the price which better be $200 with no rebate if they're aiming to compete with the iphone.

I'm not that impressed, faster CPU and a hardware keyboard seems about it. The UI looks different, I wouldn't say better then sense UI.

I don't understand how Motorola is releasing this with Android 2.0 while everyone else is just getting 1.6? Has 2.0 been done for a while and Google was just holding onto it? And it seems kind of against their "open development" strategy to give such obvious preferential treatment to Motorola/Verizon....

*drool* too bad it's going to Verizon... their data plans are prohibitively expensive.. This thing makes the mytouch or hero even look like a toy.

Data plans on the big 4 as of right now are:

Verizon: $30
T Mobile: $25
ATT: $30
Sprint: $30

$5 is prohibitively expensive for the difference between data and no data in a shit ton of places? Even voice isn't much more for those of us w/ other folks on Verizon. I've priced out T Mo vs ATT vs Verizon for my own plan and they all come out to about $85 bucks give or take $7. And when it comes to actual call quality and dropped calls...well, screw the G1 and it's robotic noises that pass off for phone calls. I've never made a phone call on the iPhone, but have been asked to use my old Razr because their shiny apple won't make a call.

Although, I haven't read that hands on yet. I'm too afraid. They're gonna fuck something up, I just know it. :(

EDIT: Article gave thumbs up to the keyboard and the capacitive screen! Love the talk about Google having a hand in the development. :D

Remember that Verizon also charges $45 if you need exchange email on your phone. Until my workplace gives me a smartphone stipend I won't worry about it. Really at that point, they pay for it and it's not my concern.

I may have to return my Hero for this....but if it's not out until 2010 then I'll say forget it. I have high hopes however, countdown on droiddoes.com indicates a late October/early November release.

Thank you sir, it would somehow come off as disingenuis if I had made such statements

disingenuis
We gotta work on your spelling there bud. Also, there should be a space in between the word "douchebag" and the smiley. :p

Oh wow...and you know what. I finally figured it out. It's been bugging me ever since the 3007 thread from 2 yrs ago. Your name. I just couldn't figure out why you had to shorten it to jacuzz1. Was the first Jacuzzi taken or something? It's so damn incomplete and I lose an extra 3 or 4 seconds every time I read it...no more! You freakin' number spellers... This is why I can't have nice things. :(

I have a wife and kid to support , not just my right or left hand deushbag:rolleyes:
You're breaking my heart. Gotta run. I'm late for my big meeting at T-Mobile. Wish I could tell you all the cool, awesome, earth-shaking stuff I know that you don't, but I've got my left hand to support.

P.S. Spell check is your friend.

Treat it well, it will serve you well;)

P.S. I was under the impression that one should indentify oneself as an industry insider to avoid accusations of viral marketing. The fact that you work for Tmobil would explain your lack of concern for my well being. That being said , I appologize for the derogatory comment earlier, I did not have my coffee. Regading my spell check.......... guilty as charged.

You and your iPhone. You think you're hot stuff now, don't you? I remember when you were cool. Then you got your iPhone. :(

Come back w/ an HTC HD2 running Android 2.0 for $69.99 w/ 600 anytime unlimited w/ mobile to mobile on any carrier released before the end of the year or I'm not interested. PS. Amateurs rely on a single hand. :p

jacuzz1: It's worse than I thought. My T-M line was in jest. Didn't think it needed explaining.

Jodiuh: Your scorn is well-deserved. I've learned the painful lesson of choosing the iPhone. I desperately hope we get an HD2 with Android 2.0, or something comparable, within the next few months. Soon, these chains that bind will be broken forever!!! The left hand simply holds my drink while a former centerfold attends to my needs. :p
