Well some friends are telling me to use opera over my good old firefox. So i want to know what the people think.

i use firefox mostly but i have opera installed too. i think that out of the box they are about the same it's just a matter of which look and feel you prefer. if you consider that there are a lot of extensions available for firefox than it becomes a clear winner.

FireFox is all I ever use.
A friend @ work used Opera, at least until I showed him the Fox, and now he's hooked on it. He says it has so much more to offer that Opera.

So i should just install opera as a secondary browser or just not waste my time with it?

Go to extensionsmirror.nl and Mozille Update, install extensions to your heart's content, and then try and use another browser.

it never hurts to have another browser. every so often i stumble upon a page that doesn't seem to render correctly with firefox. in those cases i use opera.

Hey opera is alright i ran it for a while, but you have to pay for the full version so the whole ad thing was annoying

Firefox man all the way. My buddy uses the gay IE and he gets so much more crap than i do. Popups spyware, etc. I never really used opera beacuse ever since i installed firefox like forever ago i havent looked back. But ill admit there are some sites i can't navigate w/o ie. that sux.

For about a period of a week I was very seriously considering trying Opera out since I heard of this "session saving" feature, I was told it saved the sites you were on and opened them back up the next time you open your browser. Then I found someone had made a Firefox extension to do the same. :) Of course upgrading to 1.0.1 disabled all my extensions...but oh well hopefully it'll be upgraded.

Theres an extension for that, cause that is why i liked opera so much must find this :D

I have used Opera since it was on version 5 and Firefox since it was Phoenix. I now only use Opera as a back up browser.

I think they're both excellent.

I think the Firefox engine is slightly more precise.
I think the interface / integration is purely a matter of preference.

You're not going to go wrong with either one. Try both and decide.

Opera is great and it's my main browser. However things that bug me that make me want to use Firefox are:

Can't print images, borders, horizontal rules etc. in selection. table styles are ignored when printing in a selection too. If you notice, you can't even select an image on a page.

Can't copy rich text/images from a web page.

javascript-based Richtext editors (HTMLarea for example) are not supported.

XHTML 1.1 is not *directly* supported. Almost all of it works because it's so similar to XHTML 1.0, but nothing specific to XHTML 1.1 is supported. XHTML 1.1 image maps are not *properly* supported in XHTML 1.1. In fact, an XHTML 1.1 document is treated exactly the same as an XHTML 1.0 document (regardless of mime type).

Opera uses the projection media for full screen.

no document.stylesheet support

document.selection and document.getSelection are now supported, but only properly in textareas. Full support should be in 8 final hopefully.

Security is too tight. Frame/Iframe security has been tightened so much that you can no longer write to a frame unless you use write() or set the src attribute to an html escaped data URI. Also, if you get the value of a <input type="file">, it no longer contains the full path to the file and just contains the filename. This is kind of understandable, but not for local web pages.

The background of an iframe window cannot be styled. (for use when a page is not loaded in the iframe yet)

Object tag support is great now, but plugin support is still super buggy and embedding local files via the object tag doesn't work right all the time.

Flash transparency is not handled 100% properly.

Iframes (or any embedded content) in Opera are OS-native embedded windows and nothing can be displayed over the top of them, which breaks a lot of pages.

If an image is loaded via an object tag, you cannot right-click and save it.

The cookie preferences are still incorrectly labeled, which confuses many.

No MathML support
No XSLT support

Too many sites block Opera (too many reasons to go into)

Opera has great adblocking abilities, but it's not very automated.

Why am I using Opera then?

Because the UI is that much better than Firefox's IMHO and I'd rather use it and deal with the problems above than not deal with the problems and use Firefox's horrible UI.

Basically, Opera UI + Gecko would be awesome.

I'd say that the majority of the things I don't like about Firefox have to do with the UI. I know there are extensions, but for me to be sold, it has to be 1 extension that takes care of my needs and not 70. (I had so many extensions installed in Firefox to try to get what I wanted that Opera provides, but it just wasn't enough).

I can't vouch for all Opera users, but the majority are annoyed and disgusted by extensions.

Although it may work for some, trying to convert an Opera user to Firefox by showing off a bunch of extensions, is not going to work very well.

I don't see why people try to convert Opera users to Firefox and Firefox users to Opera. They are 2 different worlds.

Nothing wrong with introducing them to something new, but saying hey, you need to quit using Firefox and use Opera because I think Opera is better, is just not the way to go about it.

If you haven't tried Opera, give it a shot. You may like it. Be sure to try Opera 8 final when it comes out as the latest stable version is 7.54u2 and it's kinda behind the times.

You want all those security holes? Your choice. Ranks up there with the people AOL has in their current ad campaign.

What do you expect? Opera is very bloated and comes with an Ad banner unless you pay for it.

Two very big turn offs for a browser, ya know. Firefox is the exact opposite. Comes bare and quick and ready for extensions, totally free without any ads.. not to mention it's entire philosophy is to be totally w3c compliant and xml-based.

Opera 8's default interface is super clean and bare. Mail client is disabled, Newfeeds are disabled. Voice, isn't installed. Only plugins included are flash and windows media.

Also, most of the panels are turned off.

And at any time you want all the goodies, you just customize the UI to your liking. No need to download, install, shutdown Opera and restart for each goodie you want.

(voice requires a download though)

As for ads, it's a skinny little bar with google text ads on it. Not really a big deal. As for the ads using bandwidth, if you had already blocked the sites the ad banner uses prior to using Opera, the banner won't use any bandwidth. If that's the case though, you should unblock those sites.

Google text ads are far less annoying than flash ads etc.

I myself do not think Opera is bloated.

I actually use both, Firefox on this machine, Opera on my other PC... However I use FF predominantly, so I voted for it.

What are you talking about Opera 8 for? It's not out yet.

..and yes I consider this bloated..

..compared to this..

..and that's withOUT the stupid ad banner.

Yea opera needs to just use the "toolbar" not that huge thing they have going, if they slimmed that down and got rid of the fee for use i would use it

Damn! What a hard decision to make. What browser should I use? Guys, I'm at a loss here.

I use Opera. Also about that guy that posted above saying Opera is bloated. Did you know you can go to Veiw > Toolbars and change all that

well that fee is still demonic, i enjoy general public liscence (dont blame me for mispelling liscence)

Yes, 7.54u2 looks bloated and 8 final is not out yet, but 8 beta 2 is far better than 7.54 in stability, features, security and its far from bloated. You can use 8 beta 2 now.

In 7.54u2 though, if it looks bloated, just turn off what you don't need. Have you been able to figure out how to turn toolsbars on/offf? Do you need help customizing the UI? It's as easy as right-click->customize.

As for the ad banner, if you don't want to register and you can't deal with the banner, that's fine and we encourage you to use something else like Firefox.

It sounds like you are happy with Firefox and have no desire to use Opera, which in that case, Opera should be of no concern.

Or do you really desire to use Opera (instead of / in addition to) Firefox, but cannot because of some annoyances?

Opera's betas are most of the time stable and better than the previous final release. The technical previews are the ones that you'd only use for testing.

Beta != bad when it comes to Opera.

Opera 8 beta 2 is available for download right on the main Opera site. It's very stable. Just install it to a separate folder and check it out if you like.

Speaking specifically about the bloated interface in previous versions, there were many, many, many discussions involving new users, seasoned users and developers on cleaning up the interface. The changes reflect everyone involved as a whole and are well thought out. Of course everyone is not going to agree with everything changes, but overall it's a big improvement to all.

Firefox is free. Opera costs money. This has been said.

And seeing as at this point, the UI is virtually a moot point for normal browsing (They all essentially operate in the same way for 97% of the things you do) and nearly anything (and probably everything at some point) offered in the browser for sale can be added as an extension - If you need it - to the free browser...

I hardly think that's a decision to make.

Opera is free. You just pay to support Opera, enable filter.ini, kiosk mode and get rid of the ads.

Both rely on $$ and the support of its users to be.

Now assuming the ads are the only concern, what part of the ads don't you like?

Is it the space it takes up in the ui and the fact that it takes up even more space if you enable the main bar?

Is it because it uses your bandwidth to download the ads?

Is it because you are concerned with your privacy? Do you think google is monitoring to the extent that you feel invaded?

Or is it none of those in particular and just the idea of ads makes you ill?

Would you use Opera if the registered version was free?

If all gecko-bases browsers forced you to display ads, which browser would you use then?

On a side note, there's already an Opera wish list forum, but I'm curious, besides the ads, what do you need Opera to do that it doesn't already?

Or are most just happy with Firefox?
(most were happy with IE untill they tried something better though)

Just curious.

Just downloaded Netscape 8 beta.

I like it better than Firefox. (once you turn off some of the toolbar stuff).

Very cool that you can put the menu bar in the title bar.

I love having the ability to switch between Gecko and Trident and that can be done site-specifically.

It also has some extra options that that are intergrated. For me, that means less extensions to install. (I'm an opera user and I like all my needs intergrated)

The skin color is a little ugly though.

Overall, I like it.

You can get it here.
ftp://ftp.netscape.com/pub/netscape8/english/8.0/windows/win32/NSB-Install-BETA.exe

One thing that I just found annoying is, by default, the ftp protocol is set to use explorer.exe. It's easily switched to use gecko though.

If you prefer it to Firefox, go download regular Mozilla. Netscape is outdated Mozilla plus rebranding, but the same style of interface.
