Oblivion mods

What main components of FCOM have been updated in such a way that they changed the installation process shown from the guide provided on dev's site?

MMM, Warcry, and the FCOM itself. It causes a few other changes in the installation process. The MMM and FCOM threads at bethsoft forums should have all the info you need but it's not really all in one spot especially once you start talking about compatibility patches. I know that you don't need some of the compatibility patches that come with the main FCOM download anymore. I remember something about COBL being different.

I haven't checked on any of these mods in a couple of months or so though.

Hmm, might be time for me to update my FCOM files then. I know that MMM has received a few small updates that I can probably skip, but I will take a look at the others.

Oblivion modification is always time consuming if you're doing it right! :D

+1 that FCOM is definitely worth it.

Most mods take less than a minute to fully install: Extract>skim readme>copy/paste files>run BOSS>activate mod. :)

that is one great guide (im following it now)... but do you know how many hours and space it requires!?

Edit: I i found that some of the unofficial patches caused oblivion to not start. And a suggestion. after every successful run of oblivion, copy it somewhere. It takes a few minutes to create this "back up" but it makes restoring a lot easier if you messed up.

My Oblivion file is 12.1 GB, I Got FCOM, Quarls Texture pack 3, Beautiful people and RAEVWD.

Fcom was a pain, first time I learned how to install it it took like 6 hours to find all the programs learn how to use them and get everything working right. After you learn how to use them it should take only about an hour though, good thing I got my Fcom backed up now so I don't have to install again.

requiem 99, I followed your guide and added some more items.

some thing to add/correct.

1) The FCOM guide does not say that you need to install MMM, but only certain .esm files, otherwise you just copy and past the textures, meshes and all the other fluff.

2) I think you should add a link to this post
http://www.thenexusforums.com/index.php?/topic/189286-testinghall/

comment 2 shows how to restore the missing meshes that Frans takes away.
I have this problem and im working on it.

3) You could add some good mods, Midas Magic seems to work just fine. Mighty Magic is not so clear and cut.

oh and my Oblivion install eclipsed 18GB...

I installed FCOM along with a bunch of other stuff recently and its not a task I'd recommend to the novice. I only survived by having done many troublesome installs of oblivion mods and from resolving problems in the past. It wasn't "easy" or "fast". I did the entire FCOM sweep plus a lot more as described here:

http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1306005

added a bunch of my own favourites as well of course... like realistic guard reaction/detection range for crimes, more detailed books/rings/amulets, et al. Oblivion is one of my all time favs and mods keep it going despite its age.

Edit: and for reference, a GTX 460 or HD6870 isn't enough to play the linked install with 1080p and everything maxed (including ini file turned way up with extra distance, shadows, shadowmap resolutions, etc). Many areas lag even without AA/AF. That's why I bought a 480. :p

Are you the thread creator in that Steam thread you linked?

LOL. Oblivion is the type of game where you need to read a 600 page manual and take the necessary two week correspondence course to get down just the basics of installing and running mods. It's absolutely fucking ridiculous to the last degree.

Last time I tried I gave up on about the 4th ancillary bullshit piece of software I had to install to just ensure compatibility of the mods, nevermind any of the mods themselves.

Gohddamn sploicer!
Hah, it is ridiculous isn't it. I gave up years ago, because I ended up spending so much time downloading/configuring/testing various modifications, which meant I barely enjoyed playing the game. I don't think I got even a quarter of the way through the main quest either.
Important lesson - keep it simple!

Okay, so now that TES V has been announced I decided to load up Oblivion and give it a run-through, since I never actually beat it.

I'm trying to find a good "weather" mod. I installed "Natual Environments" and a few other mods and every time I would enter a city I would get a big "WTF I'm a Missing Mesh" sign.

I've searched high and low for a good, updated guide with install order for some of the popular mods, like Q3 and OOO.

Thank you. I will check that. One more thing - can I use OBMM, Wrye and BOSS tools at the same time or not?

of course! Though, Wyre has more capabilities than OBMM. BOSS just does the sorting for you. OBMM, if you deal with omods (self installer packs).

Can anyone advise what mod enabling weather sounds inside of the buildings is compatible with natural environments? Will Storms and Sound work with it? OR can I combine Natural Environments with All Natural Weather?

SO I have to download 20+ mods to get this game to work right? W T F?

Probably explains my absolute bewilderment people have with this game. Oh well. Will give it a try and hope it works right. If not, oh well. I'll just go bang my head against a wall. That sounds like more fun than trying to install mods for this game.

Do I need to download all the unoffical patches if I got it off steam?

The game should work fine without any mods. If you haven't already, play the game without mods and see what you would like changed.

Many mod installations are very simple and follow the same procedure. So, after you install your first few basic mods and get the hang of it, most other mods will likely be quick to install. What I find time consuming is finding good mods. Lots of junk and outdated stuff out there.

If you want the fixes from the unofficial patches, then yes, you need to download and install them. You don't need the unofficial DLC patches unless you are running the DLC.

I've played the game off and on over the years and thought it sucked. I'm determined to give it a fair shake this time around and many of the reasons I didn't enjoy the game was some of the leveling issues, plus the fact I just didn't enjoy huge open world sandboxed games. My tases have changed substanitailly as I've got older and I have less time to play.

I'm installing Quarl's right now. Probably won't get to the game tonight though.

I was bored of the game a week after its release. Luckily, mods began to come out at that time and now I have over a thousand hours of playtime invested in it.

With Qarl's, you might want to install the Redimized version (if you aren't already) as it is very close to the same quality but quite a bit less resource hungry. Here is the link if you want to check it out: http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=OblivionMods.Detail&id=3813. To complement QTP3, there are a lot of great smaller texture packs improving stuff that QTP3 doesn't touch (flowers, doors, trees, etc.): http://www.tesnexus.com/modules/members/index.php?id=153868.

There is also a decent SI texture pack by bomret: http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=OblivionMods.Detail&id=4161. There are a few others out there too.

And once you get settled in, you may want to check out Oblivion Graphics Extender for more graphical goodness: http://forums.bethsoft.com/index.php?/topic/1156288-relwip-oblivion-graphics-extender/.

Anyone running absolutely maxed out Oblivion graphic mod wise care to comment on performance?

I'm wondering say using http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=OblivionMods.Detail&id=2420 what type i current single card I'd need to get 30+fps @1080p with AA.

6950 overkill or not? Want to go down to a 6870 or GTX 560 (not out yet obviously) if possible for a new build.

running ultra settings with a 6950 @1080. Runs fine so far.

Do I need to do this install:
Step 1> From there, install Wrye Python 02 and WryeBash 285.

for FCOM?

Neither of those files are available for download anymore. Or would Wrye Bash 275 and Python 03 work as those are the only two listed files I can find on tesnexus

The Steam guide is outdated.

Download Wrye Bash 287, install, then download 290 and install. Install Python 3a, too.

that is what i did thanks. Took a couple tries on google but I found an updated mod list.

Well, I reformatted for my new rig and I see I never backed up my Oblivion folder. This is odd considering I am almost positive I did, and since I backed up everything else on my Windows partition, why would I leave such an important directory out? I am now very sad. :(

Edit: Got everything, and then some, installed. The FCOM installation was even easier than the last time I've done it.

Thank you for the mod suggestions in this thread. I picked up Oblivion goty on steam over the summer on some sale and played vanilla to about level 6 or so but I got distracted by playing some other games. I started a new game yesterday with OOO, QTP3 redimized, darnified UI and a couple other mods that I can't remember right now.

So far my experience has been much better, its definitely much higher difficulty and looks and feels like a different game.

ugh ... I forgot all about this stupid game and just had to read this thread. I only ever played 1.5 times through on vanilla and made half-hearted attempts at mods and usually just made the game crash. This time, two or three PCs later, I actually read the readme files, got tons of mods and overhauls properly set up and running and now I have another game to waste time on.

Has there been a game as extensively modded as this one? Some of the work people do simply amazes me. I've seen great work done on other games like the TW series and others but not to the extent and depth that I've seen for Oblivion. I hope Skyrim is as open to this kind of end-user modification (or maybe I don't).

I love the Deadly Reflexes and Unnecessary Violence combat overhauls; dual-wielding, judo-throws, decapitations, impaling a stunned foe ...such fun.

I like Deadly Reflex but UV looks retarded in first person. I just didn't like that one at all.

So how well does the Gamebryo engine scale with more powerful GPUs? I'm playing with QTP3, animated window lighting system, and Really AEVWD (almost everything viewable while distant)

With these mods running @ 1920x1200 with 8xAA it absolutely crushes my SLI GTX260's, the VRAM is maxed out and I get 10-30 fps outdoors depending on where I'm facing, indoors is no problem at all of course. I've reduced settings to 2xAA and its playable, but still can get FPS dips into the low twenties/ high teens every now and then when I'm looking towards the imperial city, usually getting around 40-50 though. Even at 2xAA I see 750MB of VRAM being used.

I'm planning to upgrade to a single GTX580, mostly because I just want a new card, but I'm wondering if the Gamebryo engine will really take advantage of the extra horsepower.

I know it's squirly in FP; AFAIK it isn't even a real FP mode (it's called FFP, fake first-person mode or something). I use the chase camera view most of the time anyway, I just like the extra variety in combat.

I don't know if anyone has actually tested how well the game scales and I haven't tried AEVWD but it runs perfectly smooth on my system at full settings (so far).

AEVWD and anything that will add more NPCs on screen at a time is probably the killer. I have a weaker system and I tested it just with texture and LOD mods, and its fine. I actually haven't even played the game since reinstalling it, was still adding mods and then SB came out, so decided to wait since I'm upgrading lol...

Give http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=OblivionMods.Detail&id=2420 a shot :p

Is there any mod that hides the yet unexplored areas on the main map completely?

Bump master!! :p

What do you mean hide them? You mean like take away the drawn out cities, or take away the option to fast travel to them from the start?

Well, I would like to have the main world map hidden (fog of war) and only uncover it by traveling and exploring.

Ah, you're talking about the inventory map. I haven't seen a mod that does this, but it's a good idea. Would make it a lot easier to tell which sections of the map you haven't explored yet.

Yea, exactly. I will try some more digging but it may be there is really nothing like that.

The basic problem is that the world map (behind the icons of places) is simply a picture. You can find lots of mods to change that picture. Turning it into a dynamically updated image of where you've been and where you haven't would require very significant coding of the basic game.

That and nobody cares to explore Cyrodiil because it's basically the same four blocks of land repeated ad nauseum.

Do you know about a mod that changes the vanilla leveling up system in a way that I can assign the maximum points to a certain attribute myself and not rely on the mechanism that says I can only give it 2 points for example? I do not like this part of the vanilla leveling system but on the other hand I am quite ok with the other aspects - leveling skills by using them seems logical to me and I don't want to go to Oblivion XP mod - I do not want to change the game that much.
The mod should be compatible with OOO.
