Oblivion mods

Is it a good idea to download a huge pack of mods that are compiled or should I just do it myself one by one?

If they have exactly the mods you want, it might not be a bad thing to download some bashed patch. Though you might have to download the support files (like sounds, meshes, textures). Though I'm not sure what package you are talking about.

It supposedly is FCOM plus a few more things, and the author who posted it claims there are no copyrighted files included. I figured it was pretty safe. I don't think it has Qarl's pack or a few other tweaks I wanted. Maybe adding those would mess up the bashed patch. I might just download my own.

Has anyone here ever added stuff into your oblivion install AFTER Fcom with success? Thanks.

Adding stuff after installing FCOM works fine, but you have to be sure to rebuild the bashed patch and run BOSS to make sure the load order is correct.

On a slightly related note, has anyone been able to actually mod Oblivion and *not* have it crash every 2 hours (on a good day). I'm using one of the crash preventer mods and it helped some but it still crashes. Although now the game tends to start getting corrupted graphics instead of immediately crashing (missing meshes) giving a warning to save, although sometimes that save is corrupted...

o_O

I'm not new to modding, but damn that is a lot of mods just for one game.:p

I'm mainly looking to update the graphics and leave the gameplay as is.

LOL. Oblivion is the type of game where you need to read a 600 page manual and take the necessary two week correspondence course to get down just the basics of installing and running mods. It's absolutely fucking ridiculous to the last degree.

Last time I tried I gave up on about the 4th ancillary bullshit piece of software I had to install to just ensure compatibility of the mods, nevermind any of the mods themselves.

Word of caution, do not get carried away. I got to the point where I couldn't play Oblivion without seeing something I wanted to mod, so I hardly even played it anymore... just modded. :p

And the more and more mods you add the more likely you are to run into an incompatibility/bugs, some of which immersion/game-breaking. There are compatibility tools you can download to mitigate these instances, but I don't remember what they were called.

Gohddamn sploicer!

Honestly, no. I've tried several times and never have any success. FO3 is so much easier but not as fun sadly.

Minimal crashing issues for me. Only mod that caused a crash was one of the Better Cities mods. I had 100+ mods running at one time. (don't remember the exact number, but it was more than 100)

I have never experienced what you have. Crashes of course yes, but not like you are describing. I never received a warning about corruption. Instead, my save will just corrupt. Crash preventer made a huge difference for me.

I think exiting/restarting the game is always good. Beth games also have a hard time dealing with certain sound drivers. Try a different driver. Can't remember if there was a no-footstep sound mod for Oblivion (was one for Morrowind). Try various sound scenarios if you can.

This stupid thread made me reinstall Oblivion.

The image above is where I'm at in the process, I've never used Wrye Bash before and am totally confused as to how to use it even after reading 3 different guides. Can anyone explain, clearly, to me what it is I need to do in order to get all three of the above mods working fully and smoothly?

I sort of want to re-install Oblivion too....I remember having a shit ton of mods installed. I'm only running on an 80GB SSD these days.

How big is your oblivion folder? Pushing 30+ gb from all the textures?

Only 18.6GB. That's with SI, 117 mods, and lots of texture mods.

I AM going to re-install this game, but I am procrastinating doing it due to the sheer amount of stuff I need to download and arrange meticulously.

Same...takes a solid 3-4 hours to get everything downloaded, unzipped and copied into place.

You really need to read through the readme and play around a bit. It really sounds more complicated than it really is but once you use wrye bash a few times it's very easy.

Just open wrye bash and poke around while reading through the readme. Start with a bashed patch.

To me it looks like you only have the DLC and unofficial patch installed for starters.

I'll have my install done by the weekend...I'll post an omod file of my mod list so you can install in 1 click if you want. :)

Epicness. I'd be interested. If it's not too much to ask, do you have a list of what you're using? No problem if not.

So sorry to bring up this old topic, but i just got the oblivion bug.

My main question is if FCOM is worth it? Or have people found plain old OOO just better with some additional mods (like deadly reflexes)

And has anyone tried PahnCrd's Oblivion Enhanced Edition RC2? Which i guess is very similar to FCOM.

FCOM is worth it. It really isn't difficult or time consuming to install.

The issue with mod packs, such as PahnCrd's, is that you lose customization and mods are frequently updated. Best to install the mods you want yourself.

Thanks DJ,

how about extra magic mods? I was playing around with Supreme Magicka. Was also looking into PJ's Spell Compendium.

I seem to be one of the few that does not like the Darnified UI mod, just the way the speach options changed dont seem to be so good. I loaded another mod that made my inventory easy to manage and expanded the map and the text fields for quests, so that part is taken care of.

Who are you kidding FCOM isn't exactly easy to setup especially with other mods. Learning to use Wrye Bash and installing Oblivion mods for the first time can be pretty intimidating. The fact that the FCOM readme hasn't been updated in so long doesn't really help.

Thats the one big upside of POEE but like you said you lose all customization. For example he uses UV which was and might even still be a popular mod but I can't stand it.

I never stated it was easy and I never mentioned anything about the experience of the user.

If someone is computer illiterate and never installed a mod for Oblivion, then yes, installing FCOM will prove troublesome. I didn't realize I had to take every possibility into account when I make my posts.

There's no need to get so touchy. The documentation for FCOM isn't what it used to be since all of the updates.

I installed FCOM along with a bunch of other stuff recently and its not a task I'd recommend to the novice. I only survived by having done many troublesome installs of oblivion mods and from resolving problems in the past. It wasn't "easy" or "fast". I did the entire FCOM sweep plus a lot more as described here:

http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1306005

added a bunch of my own favourites as well of course... like realistic guard reaction/detection range for crimes, more detailed books/rings/amulets, et al. Oblivion is one of my all time favs and mods keep it going despite its age.

Edit: and for reference, a GTX 460 or HD6870 isn't enough to play the linked install with 1080p and everything maxed (including ini file turned way up with extra distance, shadows, shadowmap resolutions, etc). Many areas lag even without AA/AF. That's why I bought a 480. :p

I completely agree. Mods make Oblivion one of the best games of all time. The community is great.

is so touching to you have you guys fight over FCOM. And we do have a loot of n00bs here on [H]ard forums, but if people ask, i think they should be able to handle it. I do wish that there was a complete torrent or a guide (similar to what you linked to requiem99) that lists all the steps and then some.

I am planning to install Natural Environments and the Rasterized Texture pack (probably the max), the Guard reaction i think is a must. Some sort of sneak modifier (I am not sure if FCOM modifies sneak) to allow for more then 1 sneak attack if you are not noticed.. (attach and hide 2.0? any suggestions?) Some leveling mod that will automatically increase my attribute whenever my governing skills go up by 2. And level automatically.(i wonder how hit points are added in it)

Now to figure out if I still want to go Antronach :) or go the safer route with apprentice or thief their for the luck bonus. (no birthsign limit mod to go with it) I think Luck reduces the cost of spells, because it modifies your magicka skill values beyond 100.

Magic mods are a must, yeah midas looks good.

and ps, i have a 6870. So well see how it handles 1920x1200

What main components of FCOM have been updated in such a way that they changed the installation process shown from the guide provided on dev's site?
