Finally picked up the GOTY edition today (played the hell out of the 360 version, though) and was wondering what are some good mods for it?

Look through the screenshot thread. There are a lot of Oblivion pics and most of them are using mods and state which ones.

The best mod for Oblivion is OOO:

http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=OblivionMods.Detail&id=3953

This adds a lot of action to an otherwise stark game world, with new added regional big monsters random NPCs on their own quests/hunts, and entirely new random dungeons and loot. There are more spells, enemies don't drop glass weapons on a dime at mid-levels, and they removed the annoying auto-leveling of enemies.

They changed the main quest so that also does not level. They targeted the difficulty for around level 25 - this means you're forced to explore, level-up and and do side quests before you're ever able to take on the main quest. I always thought it was silly that you could go into the first Oblivion gate at level 1, and actually survive.

I can't comment on any of the texture mods because I never tried them. For me, Oblivion is beautiful enough if you just choose HDR lighting, force AA and AF in the control panel, and max-out all the settings.

Two big ones to get you started:
QTP3 Redimized
FCOM

Must haves to make life easier:
BOSS
Wrye Bash
OBMM
OBSE

Also, if you hate the "Level Optimizing" minigame Oblivion forces you to play (so easy to waste levels if you're not paying attention), then you want to try this mod:

http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=oblivionmods.detail&id=334

It's configurable to many different settings, and you can level based off pure skill increases, instead of making sure you get 10 skill increases in your primary to trigger a "level." You can also change your configuration at any time during the game by putting the ring back on.

Here's what I'm currently running....

(Obviously you need Oblivion Mod Manager)

qarl tp3
natural environments
-vegetation and habitat only
atmospheric weather system
phinix waterfix
real lava
landscape lod
-2 packs + fix
natural faces
darnified ui
color map mod
colored enemy health

(I saved this list with instructions because it's a solid install order etc)

I fiddled with mods A LOT and found the above list to be a great combination.

Enjoy.

Man.... too many excellent choices. You could spend a whole week deciding the awesomeness of possibilities.

I'll just throw in that you really should get the Oblivion Crash prevention System. My game on Win7 64bit + Oblion Crash prevention is 50 times more stable than my time with WinXP without Crash prevention.

One of my favorite mods for oblivion (apart from the standard FCOM / darnified UI mentioned above) is Oblivion XP. It replaces the standard "grind x skill to get x stat bonus" with a straight experience system. You gain a certain amount of experience for a level and then distribute your skills and stats afterwards (which are weighted depending on your class specialties). At first this sounds a bit bland but it rewards things that you would usually not do, for example reading unique books rewards experience, finding nirnroots, exploring new locations, mixing new potions, just to name a few. It also integrates experience quest rewards with many high-quality user mods. I found many a good mod by looking through its supported mod list.

Another mod I use to rebalance magic (and actually make it have a point) is Supreme Magicka combined with Sorcery's Toll. Supreme magicka rebalances a bunch of the existing spells and adds new ones such as blink, levitate, rock armor, fortify jump, and my personal favorite, rapid fire. Rapid fire is a buff you cast on yourself that causes any destruction magic cast afterwards to be cast 2-4x extra (with an increased cost obviously). It also adds sneak attacks to magic. One thing to note is you should disable the mana regeneration in this mod in favor of the one in sorcery's toll (if you enable both bad things happen).

Sorcery's Toll on the most basic level allows you to cast any spell regardless of your skill level. However doing so can result in backlash and magic sickness on your character that damage your stats. Additionally attempting to summon a creature much higher than your skill level can result in it turning on you. This mod also gives a purpose to carrying around a magic staff as a mage - any backlash is first grounded into your magic weapon and drains charges off of it instead of dealing damage to your character.

These last two mods I pretty much consider required ,even though they are very simple in nature:

Toggleable Quantity Prompt - Ever get tired of the monotony of clearing out your inventory? Click item, select quantity, slide to right, click okay, click next item... Gets old fast. This mod makes it so that by holding down control and click an item sells one item in the stack; and holding shift sells the entire stack. No more Quantity Prompt!

No More Annoying Merchant Comments - Silences merchants, simple, effective, and still plays the comments if you try to haggle too much.

I love TESNexus mod database. I could never in a million years, imagine playing the console version without all the super fukin awesome mods.

A full Oblivion install is one of the more intricate and complicated things to install in modern gaming. I usually have several false starts whenever I do it.

Patches and bug fixes:
1. Install Oblivion
2. Install Shivering Isles (if you have it)
3. Install official Shivering Isles 1.2.0416 patch if you have SI, otherwise install the Oblivion 1.2.0416 patch. Install only one or the other, not both. Official patches found here. You absolutely MUST do this to avoid serious game-breaking bugs.
4. Install Knights Of The Nine (if you have it). KotN includes all but one of the Official DLC mods.
5. Install The Fighter's Stronghold Official Mod (if you have it). This is the last Official DLC mod.
6. Install Unofficial Oblivion Patch 3.2.0
7. Install Unofficial Official Mods Patch v15 (if you have #4 and/or #5)
8. Install Unofficial Shivering Isles Patch 1.4.0 (if you have SI).

After that, install mods. Especially:
Redimized Qarl's Texture Pack 3 (also get its patch from the same page)
A highly optimized version of Qarl's Texture Pack 3, which looks just as good but consumes a lot less texture memory. The original QTP3 remains one of the biggest texture memory hogs ever; when used with other big mods, I was able to exceed 1GB of texture memory used, which made even my 768MB 8800GTX choke.
Bomret's Texture Pack for Shivering Isles - the same guy who did Redimized Qarl's did the same thing for Shivering Isles!

OBMM is very helpful for switching mods in and out when experimenting.
OBSE is required for some of the more useful mods - one of the best is Keychain.

Dark UI 2.40 - awesome alternative dark-colored user interface.

UESP Oblivion Wiki is just an extremely useful web page. In particular check out the Quests page.

Absolutely.

In addition to UESP, it's worth checking out the official Bethsoft forums bethsoft.com/bgsforums and look at the Oblivion Modding section. It's a good place to ask questions.

Also, if you're new to Oblivion modding you should take a moment to learn about Load Order. Oblivion loads all of its data plugins (.esm and .esp) in a specific order. Whenever two mods conflict (they try to edit the same thing) the plugin that is loaded later will override the plugin that is loaded earlier. If you have a mod that doesn't seem to be working it's entirely possible that its changes are being overridden by another mod, so Load Order is something you need to pay close attention to.

So you might be asking, "What determines the load order"? and the answer is the Last Modified date on the file. You could spend hours and hours trying to manually tweak your load order, but fortunately there are many programs that can do this for you.

The two most worth mentioning are OBMM and Wrye Bash. Both of these programs offer a lot of Oblivion tools, too. OBMM and Wrye Bash can help group your mods into easily installable packages which make it a lot easier to switching mods in and out. With Wrye Bash you can have different mods load depending on which character you want to play.

If you want to learn more about Load Order, there's this excellent page or check out the official forums.

Dev null has a lot of great guides... though his stuff has missed the most recent of recent stuff coming out lately.

It does take some education if you really want to pack in lots of mods without conflicts. If you're a newbie mod user (lol, it can be a science), I'd stay away from FCOM until you feel comfortable with reading lots of instructions or with using mods in general.

Keep it simple:
1. Oscuro's Oblivion Overhaul installed via Oblivion Mod Manager should be a great place to get started.
2) Get that and some texture packs. Qarl's comes to mind.
3) Get 1 magic overhaul (I like Suprememe Magicka)
4) Get 1 Combat overhaul. Deadly reflexes is a good choice.
5) 1 combat Animation mod will spice new life into your game. Avoid getting more than one replace unless you know what you are doing. There are two ways animations can be replaced. And different ways to handle new animations, so just get one and things will be simple.

Get those and you shouldn't worry about conflicts. After that you can gradually add more stuff in.

Other than that, just peruse: Go to www.tesnexus.com, go to "browse categories" -> click a category -> Then go to "Organise" then hit the "Endorsements" dropdown then "Desc" (descending) -> click "Go"

Peruse the favorite mods. Pay attention to it's readme in the "description" and pay extra attention to "requirements" and "conflicts."

Perusing is almost half the fun if you're looking at mods geared towards visual changes.

I'll be eyeballing this thread later. Every time I tried to re-play Oblivion to finally finish it, I either completely trashed my install with mod chaos or I just gave up after seeing how many mods there are that do similar things.

Wow actually sounds like it's worth playing now. Those were all of my major complaints. Auto leveling mobs is for the serious loss. My only other gripe would be your 'Captain Planet' like character where you have all powers of all classes. I may just make an exception for this mod.

Does it fix the bugs that are supposedly in this game or do you still need to get a mod to fix bugs?

same here. I did not have the will to finish (a second time) and I kept making a hash of my game with a bunch of attempts at making the game more fun. I REALLY hated the auto-leveling world.

I'm just going to quote an email I sent to my brother about this a couple months ago.

This is the site where I get all my mods for Oblivion. You'll probably recognize it : http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/categories.php
Below is a giant list of all the mods I have put with it, in correct load order. There is also an app out there (which I used) which puts all the mods in the correct order. The most important ones I'll go through individually though.

Enhanced Weather - Makes Rain, Snow, thunderstorns, fog, etc. Pretty cool adding atmosphere.
Oscuro's Oblivion Overhaul (OOO) - This one is MOST important. Takes a lot of crappy aspects of the original, and makes them work right, while adding a bunch of weapons, armor, etc. It's the FOOK of Oblivion.
Unique Landscapes (xul) - Just a bunch of graphics re-textures to make the game look significantly cooler.
Streamline - Just optimizes a lot of the settings, makes the game run smoother.
Qarl's Texture Pack - Again, makes the game look waaay cooler.
DarNified UI - Makes the UI better.

The complete list is below. Again, I prefer most of these for myself, but you may or may not dig them. Also, feel free to peruse the site above and see if there are any other ones you might like. I recommend just looking at the most popular ones and going from there. It's been out for a while now, so there are LOTS of mods. Let me know if you have any issues, but keep in mind I haven't played this game in probably about a year, so I'm not very fresh on it. Pretty cool though.

I'm not new to modding, but damn that is a lot of mods just for one game.:p

I'm mainly looking to update the graphics and leave the gameplay as is.

Get the unofficial patch and Oblivion Crash Prevention System for the bugs. If you have the expansion, then get the unofficial patch for expansion as well.
If you don't like the "Captain Planet" master of all skills without specialization, you probably also want nGCD. nGCD will keep your leveling system more simple where high mage skills are for mages and high fighter skills are for fighters. You won't have to do skill tricks to maximize your attribute gain.

Oblivion + mods is almost anything you want the game to be.

If you're looking to just up the graphics:

Qarl's Texture Pack (QTP)
Unique Landscapes
Beaming Sunglare
There's a few enhanced water add ons (Better Imperfect Water comes to mind)
There's a tweak in the .ini file to enable multisampling with HDR.

Is there any other site where the Redimized Qarl's Texture Pack 3 and the patch for it can be downloaded from? The link provided is quite slow and I cannot find any other source.
But maybe I can just download the orig QTP3 if I have a i5-750 and Radeon 5770? It should be able to handle that, right?

Word of caution, do not get carried away. I got to the point where I couldn't play Oblivion without seeing something I wanted to mod, so I hardly even played it anymore... just modded. :p

And the more and more mods you add the more likely you are to run into an incompatibility/bugs, some of which immersion/game-breaking. There are compatibility tools you can download to mitigate these instances, but I don't remember what they were called.

Modding Oblivion is oddly addictive.

Must have mods are Obscuros Overhaul, Qarls texture packs and keychain. Then you can go crazy from there.

Keychain is unnecessary when using DarnifiedUI - simply collapse the key segment in the inventory. The only reason I point it out is because the plugin that it needs to run (pluggy) has been known in the past to cause savegame corruption, incompatibilities, and crashes. Perhaps the later versions have fixed the issue but I personally won't risk it, and none of the other mods I use need it.

What ever became of unique landscapes ? Or whatever it was called. It divided the world up into more unique ecosystems. Like there were 2 different kinds of swamp and several more varieties of forest. It shook the visuals up a bit. I had it running on top of Oscuro and it started crashing a lot and my save got corrupted.

Haven't touched Oblivion in years, but I'm looking forward to TES V.

Holy Jesus, now I feel the forces of darkness telling me I must find my copy of Oblivion and install it.

Help me brothers!!!!

Qarl's texture pack 3 is a must have mod.

Then there are those 3 LOD mods which are incredibly easy to download and install.

And then, finally, there are the flora and fauna mods, and the door (yes door) mod, and the tree mod - all by Mikal33.

You can find everything you need here:

http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Must_Have_Mods

These transform Oblivion. The game doesn't look like it's 4 years old with these mods running.

Holy Jesus, now I feel the forces of darkness telling me I must find my copy of Oblivion and install it.

Help me brothers!!!!

Since I've returned. Things have really matured even more. Modders watch out for each other's work really minimizing conflicts. And if there are some, there is all kinds of documentation on just merging two or more conflicting mods.

Now... you can spend a couple nights setting up the perfect mod list... to find out that it actually works real well!

hey guys, Oblivion GOTY + SHivering Isles + all the DLC is available on Steam for $24.99!!!!

The only set of mods you will really need are texture mods, as stated earlier in this post and FCOM Convergence. Follow the instructions VERY carefully and get the correct versions of everything, otherwise you'll just end up wasting your time.

http://devnull.sweetdanger.net/convergence.html

FCOM: Convergence shatters previous barriers in the Oblivion mod community by letting you play four of the largest Oblivion "overhaul" mods at the same time -- Oscuro's Oblivion Overhaul, Martigen's Monster Mod, Oblivion WarCry, and Francesco's Leveled Creatures-Items. It also seeks to show how new item and/or creature expansion mods can be added directly to this environment, and thus includes optional support for Bob's Armory, Loth's Blunt Weapons for Npcs, Cobl, Tamrielic Ingredients, Knights of the Nine, Tamriel Travelers, and many other popular mods.

My goodness, I cannot believe that nobody has mentioned Lost Spires. When I was playing Oblivion, I had over one hundred mods at one time (Unique Landscapes were awesome, by the way), but this was definitely the best.

DEFINITELY.

It's a huge quest mod that adds new areas, a new guild, interesting new enemies and weapons, and even new voice acting. Please, please do yourself a favor and check it out.

http://www.lostspires.com/

Second-best mod was the Ivellon mod, which is a lot different but also a lot of fun. Check it out: http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=13714

Do not become like me and get so obsessed with mods you do not even play the game.

I do not even want to admit this, but I have never played a character past ~lvl13, either because I did not have the hardware to run the game properly or did not feel I had enough mods to give me the desired effect I was seeking, or ocassionally did not care for my characters looks or spec.

I am sitting down today with the intention of creating a new character, but I still want a few more mods :p
Cannot decide if I should get the Unique Landscape package or play w/o it my first time through, also unsure if I would want a leveling mod (AF Leveling or Kobu's Character Advancement System). Also considering Midas Magic/ Deadly Reflex... sigh

Any advice for me regarding UniqueLandscaps/ AF Levelnig and Midas Majic, ect?

Also I saw a package that included OOO and three other "must have mods" the other day and now cannot find the link.

I forget the name, but the one where you can summon a dragon and ride it! Now that was very awesome!

That's part of the fun.... "lemme start over to try this now." I had modding ADD too. Definitely get Midas Magic. A must for magic users. The effects are crazy and the mod is far more than just an "extra spells" mod. It's sort of like a questmod. And if you character ends up just being a fighter with little magic, the mod won't interfere with your game at all. It's one of those things that's just there. Just like the mages guild. You can join and do the quests, or leave it for another playthrough. You don't have to use the moves in Deadly Reflex right away. You can start your game by only installing. Then after a while... you can come back to the mod and actually look at the rest of the readme to see what moves you can do. The enemies will dodge your arrows though! Or you can just wait for the new version.
Unique landscapes would be good if you're paying attention to what other mods might conflict with it.

btw, if you find your character ugly, just use console(~) enableracemenu to modify the face then save before are done. Load your save and you won't lose stats.

Is this what you are talking about? Sounds badass, might have to use it after I play through the game

Thanks for the help

The akatosh Mount mod is pretty cool. There's also several mods which make the game much prettier. The texture and landscape mods, of course, but there's also a mod that makes the windows in all the houses light up and there's a mod that turns a bunch of stuff into fountains. Plenty of mods to make the game really come to life.

Unrelated, but I'm disappointed Fallout 3 hasn't received the same love from the modding community.
