Aion Release

The game is great, I just hit level 24. You start feeling the grind around the 20's. One more level and I can get into the Abyss!!! I'm so poor I need to get some gear for my dude.

like the post above said, apart from flight and a well designed pvp system, none of those are going to significantly or fundamentally change the game. unique races/mobs/environments? every game has it's own lore and cosmology... the ability to change armor is a minor (but nifty) aesthetic issue. crafted armor is the best because this game doesn't endgame raiding right?

Game supposidly does have some endgame raiding, however I haven't been that level.

unique races/mobs/environments, this game stands in the ranks of something like eve-online and AO. I mean shit nearly every mmorpg has orcs, dwarfs, and crap - this definately has a different style.

Good non-arena pvp has only been done by a few games, namely Daoc, Shadowbane, eve-online (quite different) and vanguard pvp server. Eq2 has zone edges and horrible class balance in pvp, and WoW even on pvp server is all arena style (I play on one).

Most games, drops are best equipment there are very very few games that have crafted equip as the best. The few that do have that it still usually requires the main piece to be the drop. This game, you can craft much better than drop armor for the most part without anything except minor drops.

Armor looks in other mmorpg's can only be changed mainly by color. You can completely change the style of it in Aion.

Most importantly is the combat. It is eq1 style. There are very few except maybe Vanguard for recent mmorpg's that use the "longer" style of combat. Combat takes a while, and is a micro management battle especially against elites. This is really unlike most of the mmorpg's out. I tend to run around with a gladiator. We can 2man elite content, but it's tough and takes time with alot of risk. This is far different from most models of mmorpgs where "elite" mobs definately take a near full group to take down and fairly impossible with 2man etc.

Most important though is the feel/polish on the world.

Sitting there gathering a Grax walks by which looks like a cross between a ox, tiger and camel. When it got closer, it's head turned towards me and as it walked past me the head follows me as if invading his space. He sits there and eats some grass, and as soon as someone else walks by, he stops and looks at them and it's head follows them till the are out of range.

I mean that kind of detail just hasn't been around in the mmorpg's I've played, and I've played damn near all of them. It makes the world feel alive.

It is definately not the ideal mmorpg but it's pretty damn great, and much better than some of the recent releases.

the xp requirement seems to grow massively as the levels increase.

in the 20s, have you managed to level with quests or is it just basic grinding or a mix of both? if it's a mix, how much would you estimate is the grind? (i would include repeatable, 'coin' type quests into the grinding category as well, especially if you end up doing it multiple times).

Right now I'd consider it a grind.. I'm hoping 25+ would be a bit better with Abyss leveling and Pk exp.

At 20+ it seems to start getting really grindy. Personally I think it weeds out people, but this is probably one of the harder lvling games thats been out in recent history - I have no experience of what it's like 30+ though.

Right now my glad is lvl 21. Im trying to catch up to my guild. We have some guys that are lvl 30+ already.

yea i'm past 20 and i can definitely feel the grind, although it's more because i'm waiting for a friend to catch up. suddenly, even the campaign quests for krall (elyos) that give 100-150k xp don't seem like much at all when your xp requirement is over a million per level. i'll probably stick it out to at least 25 to see what the abyss is all about.

Well, I hit lvl 10 today. I have to admit, I've been spoiled by WoW with RAF bonus and heirloom items as it's a little depressing to kill something and only see your experience bar move a millimeter.

Some things that I like:

Flying at 10 for faster travel
Teleporting (no flight paths)
Weapon switching in combat
One gathering skill for all types of nodes
Class paths but still keeping core abilities (Scout becoming a Ranger but still keeping assassin-like abilities)
Easy to find quest objectives with the locator tool and not having to use coordinates
No addons (keeps the playing field fair)
No reputations to grind

Things I dislike:

Gold f'n spammers
Kill stealing - probably the worst part of the game
Camera - can't figure out why I can't run and rotate while keeping it rotated if i let go of mouse
Animations need to finish before you can do next command

this is single handedly ruining the game experience. look at this screenshot that i just came across

This is actually an easy fix.

Thanks to the developers they have incorporated a way to make yourself invisible to /who requests or something. If you do /anon as a command in chat, it makes you anonymous and gold spammers cannot bother you with this garbage. This has increased my likeness of gameplay ten-fold. Hopefully they can get this under control.

Also, something else the GM's and devs need to look at, at least for Elyos side is the insane amount of bots near the observatory in Verteron and other areas.

going invisible only protects you from gold whispers. it also stops anyone else from whispering you as collateral damage. as you can see from the screenshot above, the gold sellers have invaded the general chat channels as well. general/trade/lfg/class.... every single channel is being spammed by them. there's no way to stop that short of leaving them all.

You can still be whispered by PLAYERS. Gold spammers only whisper you if they can find you...

I've noticed tons of comparisions to WoW... but has anyone played it that played (and enjoyed) FFXI? I'm thinking of trying it out, but I'd love to hear a FFXI'ers thoughts on it first. :)

well i haven't tested it out so i'll take your word for it. i was assuming you just went invisible totally, so you'd disappear from friends lists and what not.

in any case, gold seller whispers are now just part of the problem... you can see the same spam in all the chat channels anyway.

I'm on the Lumiel server and have NEVER seen gold spammers on the public channels. I get a couple whispers an hour for to buy gold, but nothing that takes away from my experience.

Yea I'm on Lumiel as well, Elyos side and haven't seen them in chat channels.

Yea I see that from the screenshot, but I haven't noticed them on the chat channels. Going invisible you can still interact with the guild and receive group invites.

After about an hour or so of playing. It was a cool experience. I am in the process of playing both this and champion's. only made it to level 6 last night in Aion, and currently i think lvl 19.
Aion in itself is a pretty solid game so far. graphically very nice.i think champions is more demanding.can run higher specs in Aion without degrading smoothness.
the fight system is pretty basic in this. attack then hit the next attack and so on and on and on.
just wanted something slightly different than champions so when i get brainfried on champions i can switch over. of course waiting because the servers are heavily populated. had to wait about 38 mins to get into. there is no wait with champion's.

all in all. aion is a good game, hopefully does not die soon before i hit max lvl cap

So far the only thing that makes me mad in the game is people kill stealing and vitallity stealing you. Nothing like going for some ore and some guy coming up and snaging the next hit on the node right after your first.

The Mercs left DF for Aion, when they started losing their advantage over here. So you guys better learn to get down and dirty. They will do anything possible for an advantage. When playing with them the only advice I can offer is keep your eyes on the community boards and take full advantage of all bugs/exploits as soon as you find them. Fight fire with fire.

it's pretty bad on my server (nezekan - elyos). i get a whisper every couple of minutes and i can't go 30 seconds without getting the spam in a chat channel :(

What are you talking about.

are the Mercs like myg0t of mmo's or something?

To instantly stop gold spam tells

Hit V

Click on first tab

pull down menu at top right to "invisible"

You can still be whispered too if someone knows your name, you still show up in friends lists and guild.

For the channel gold spam it sucks, but you can always just turn off the channel, I'm sure they will do something in the future about this.

I dont know what myg0t is but they are a group of extremeley competitive pvpers/griefers. They are known for hoping from game to game, burning through all the bugs and exploits to gain an advantage, and usually in the end, getting their ass kicked by the server and leaving the game once everyone else levels the playing field.

Im not 100% sure about their history I know they started on the first neverwinter nights, where they griefed and exploited so much so that the entire clan got a perma ban.

I'm trying not to talk to much shit because they are for the most part a very strong group of players, they each have the FPS/MMO playerskill but they have no honor, and just want to be on top no matter what.

A simple explanation: If they played WoW they would probabley get to lvl 60, kill all the newbs questing, deem themselves the winners of WoW, then quit when everyone else hit 60.

Sounds like every other ass hat online now myself included. At the moment this game requires a certain amount of ass hattery in order to get anything done. The zones are clogged with players. Once you get to the 20 plus zones its worse. Elten has no chnls to jump to so you are screwed. I am almost done there for the moment though.

Yea Eltnen has no other channels... since hte game is just over 1 week old it will still be another week or so before all these zones start diluting and people start doing more abyss and instancing.

How did you slot an Orb and Tome in your main at the same time ??

All characters can switch weapons. You can equip 2 different sets but you obviously only use one at a time. I use the book for PvP (ranged) and the orb (melee) for PvE.

Mine.

Gonna boost my Armorsmithing to 150 tonight so I can actually make myself a decent chestpiece. Then I'll load up with Physical Crit Manastones.

Was just playing some at lunch. I did a /anon and was still getting gold spammer whispering me.

So what is everyone slotting for manatones? (offensive type manastones ,phy crit, Magic Boost etc) or HP? My sorc currently has 2,110 HP with a whopping +42 magic boost . Sometimes with these PUG's when no one's around in the legion to group with. I end up offtanking, apparently the term "Assist" does not bode well with PUG's when cc'ing.

http://na.aiononline.com/livestatus/character-legion/search?serverName=Triniel&charName=Godspadin

As a sorc, at least at your level, I'd suggest magic boost all the way. It makes grinding/PvE/quests much faster. As a sorc, you shouldn't be getting hit in the first place if you're doing it correctly. Now, at later levels for PvP it's a different story, HP is quite important then to avoid dying on an initial burst from an enemy. But to level up faster I'd go with MB.

On my chanter I'm giong Physical crit all the way. The more crits I can score the more times I can knock down an enemy with my staff. Chanters are very fun for me.
