There's also the arena in the main town. Usually though it's a gank fest of higher levels annihilating lower levels. Arena is basically like the one in STV freefor all.

it's worth it for the free wings.
do they have any affect on the gameplay?
yes, you will need wings to fly for PvP!
Is this game worth checking out?
I enjoyed WoW. I jus got sick of all of the same stuff to look at. So maybe I'll enjoy this since it's WoW with a different skin??

yes you can engage in combat in the air.
for the most part, it is wow with a different skin. it's fairly polished too, although you can see flaws when you get into it. i would suggest waiting for a while to see how the games turns out... right now it's only been a few days since launch. i hear that it becomes very grindy later on.
It has some wow aspects, but then against most of those aspects were from eq1. This game has significant differences from WoW. I really wish people would quit saying that. It's more unlike wow than most of the mmorpg's that have come out in the last 5 years.
i just looked at your list in your earlier post and of all the points you raise, the only two i find significant are aerial combat and the fact that pvp is supposed to be better. the rest of the list is completely superficial. it looks great, it runs great, it has a lot of polish... agreed. but that doesn't make it a vastly different game from wow. it really doesn't.
edit - to clarify, i'm just using wow as the popular baseline. in other words, aion isn't different from most mmo games out there, all of which mostly follow a similar template.
I highly recommend people try this game if they are MMO fans. I also would disagree about the "superficialness" of a game being irrelevant... the game HAS to look great. You're staring at graphics all day long... why wouldn't you want it to run smoothly and look nice and wanna bang the female character you are using? Aesthetics is a key factor as well as gameplay and Aion has both.
p.s. - gliding is freaking awesome if people figured out how to do it. and assassin sprint? omgahsex!
Taking points from what you said...
Basically what you meant was...
"This game is in the same genre as other MMOs. I have no interest in this."
The same could be said for every FPS and RTS. Everyone takes ideas from each other and refines on it and creates their own thing.
what i am saying is that let's not pretend that the game itself is vastly different from wow. i'm not disagreeing that there are differences, just that they don't change the fact that this is another standard mmo.
That. The game isn't bad, it's polished, it's graphics are really nice, it's stable for the most part but except the flying and the PvP....it's really not vastly different. I know every MMO is very similar to the next but there are subtle differences in all of them. However, i PERSONALLY don't see the big attraction to AION as many claim they see. I probably let it go after my 37 days are over.

1. Flying, flying combat, and gliding. While some games had flying, it's not the same here.
2. Crafted equipment is the best.
5. Ability to change an armors looks.
8. Completely unique mobs and character races never seen before.
9. Challenging combat, fairly balanced classes. Combat is slower, one of my biggest complaints about WoW was the combat speed was way to fast especially for pvp, 2 hits and your dead.
11. Good non-arena pvp.
12. NO UI MODS TO DUMB DOWN THE GAME - the stock ui is pretty good, and it makes it more challenging. No carbonite, healing grid mouse overs, etc
All of these above from my list are really not graphics related at all. Most of these have either not been in other games, or very very few if any at all. So I don't know what you are talking about. The combat feel is significantly different especially if you look at the duration of combat. (Past about lvl 15)
