Aion Release

There's also the arena in the main town. Usually though it's a gank fest of higher levels annihilating lower levels. Arena is basically like the one in STV freefor all.

Ok I just bought the game and can play tonight. What's a good server with some of you that I could play on?

Im looking to get this game. Is the collector's edition worth the extra 10 bux? i dunno doesnt seem like it makes a difference

gives you 40 seconds more flight time (collector's wings). You can also fight with the wings in the air AFAIK

I purchased the collectors and have a level 18 SP on Lumiel (Elyos)anyone want to buy it from me? I'am just not feeling it with this game :p

Maybe this was a mistake. I've been trying to download it since 3:30pm Central time and it's still at 0% from Steam

I enjoyed WoW. I jus got sick of all of the same stuff to look at. So maybe I'll enjoy this since it's WoW with a different skin??

aside from the fact that it has quests like every other mmo, its really nothing like wow.

I've been through at least 8+ mmorpg's in beta to end level (yes crack some no life jokes ;)) and this one I have to say is the best release I have seen.

I like japanamation but I just don't care for mmorpg's with that feel usually (such as lineage, lineage2). However, this game has flavor all it's own.

I haven't been immersed in the story line from a mmo in a LONG time. The world is just gorgeous and full of life, and definately not anything I've seen before. Dwarfs? no Orcs? no, etc etc. All the mobs and life is stuff I have never seen before. Cut scenes are great, character creation is top notch, equipment looks great. Is that a orange fur plump stripped pig! yes it is. TUTTY! Is that a cross between a squirel and a duck? yes it is!

Combat is more challenging than like the easy-mode leveling of many other mmorpg's out right now especially when you hit elite mobs.

I haven't gotten to do much pvp yet, but that was one of the reasons I got the game was for some good pvp (I pretty much play on pvp servers in mmorpgs for some extra flavor). I'm by far not a griefer, I just like good pvp - and best of all it's not retarded arena style.

Some of the games I've played from beta to end (most of them a couple not) off the top of my head - eq1, AO, eve-online, eq2, shadowbane, daoc, AC2, vanguard, warhammer, D&DO, Lineage2, FXII, WoW

This game resembles WoW very little. I think people get confused because essentially all mmorpgs are similar in some ways because it's the genre. Nearly every mmorpg has quests of some sort. To top it off WoW is alot of peoples first game so they associate it as being the base for mmorpg's (when really it was muds and eq1). Also even with the very few server crashes and queues this has been the best release I've seen. I can't even express the horror of the AO launch, or shadowbane for that matter. I mean people seem to forget that the WoW release was REALLY bad. It's also taken over 8 years to get the content that WoW has it into the game, Aion has a ton of features at the start.

What IS unique about it is

1. Flying, flying combat, and gliding. While some games had flying, it's not the same here.
2. Crafted equipment is the best.
3. It's so gorgeous there is not a single Mmorpg that compares (aside from eve-online and Vanguard just for scale which I don't consider those quite in the same category)
4. The world. Floating islands. Floating cities. Many of which you have to fly to get there.
5. Ability to change an armors looks.
6. I want to have sex with some of the female models.
7. Extremely polished at launch, lots of features already in.
8. Completely unique mobs and character races never seen before.
9. Challenging combat, fairly balanced classes. Combat is slower, one of my biggest complaints about WoW was the combat speed was way to fast especially for pvp, 2 hits and your dead.
10. Cutscenes, tons of them, and very well thought out, not 10 minutes long.
11. Good non-arena pvp.
12. NO UI MODS TO DUMB DOWN THE GAME - the stock ui is pretty good, and it makes it more challenging. No carbonite, healing grid mouse overs, etc

Just some thoughts off the top of my head. I'm Elyos on Siel fyi. West coast server. I haven't seen a queue in days.

Yeah, it looks like the majority of the issues are on the east coast servers (even though both east and west servers are physically based on the east coast)

A new server, Fregion just launched today.

Just a quick update i dunno if it was posted.

They made it so the afk shops after 30min get dc'd

Its 8pm on a friday night and my wait queue is only 2min compared to hours like yesterday.

well like WoW...can you use them during PVP. in WoW you cant

yes you can engage in combat in the air.

for the most part, it is wow with a different skin. it's fairly polished too, although you can see flaws when you get into it. i would suggest waiting for a while to see how the games turns out... right now it's only been a few days since launch. i hear that it becomes very grindy later on.

It has some wow aspects, but then against most of those aspects were from eq1. This game has significant differences from WoW. I really wish people would quit saying that. It's more unlike wow than most of the mmorpg's that have come out in the last 5 years.

i just looked at your list in your earlier post and of all the points you raise, the only two i find significant are aerial combat and the fact that pvp is supposed to be better. the rest of the list is completely superficial. it looks great, it runs great, it has a lot of polish... agreed. but that doesn't make it a vastly different game from wow. it really doesn't.

edit - to clarify, i'm just using wow as the popular baseline. in other words, aion isn't different from most mmo games out there, all of which mostly follow a similar template.

Taking points from what you said...

Basically what you meant was...

"This game is in the same genre as other MMOs. I have no interest in this."

The same could be said for every FPS and RTS. Everyone takes ideas from each other and refines on it and creates their own thing.

I highly recommend people try this game if they are MMO fans. I also would disagree about the "superficialness" of a game being irrelevant... the game HAS to look great. You're staring at graphics all day long... why wouldn't you want it to run smoothly and look nice and wanna bang the female character you are using? Aesthetics is a key factor as well as gameplay and Aion has both.

p.s. - gliding is freaking awesome if people figured out how to do it. and assassin sprint? omgahsex!

I agree with this, I am playing the game now, and after looking at my aion character, seeing my mage in wow is like being jabbed in the eye with an ice pick.

Here is a snapshot when back around level 10

thin, just as a caster should be, not a body builder on steroids. Bit emo? Yes, but excusable since it's an arrogant magic user.

As far as gameplay goes, good so far. Can't say anything about endgame because there is a long way for most of us to go to get there, but it is good looking, with novel mechanics that are organic, the flying is not something tacked on like vehicles in wow.

The main sore point is that I feel alot weaker compared to my established wow character, but then, perhaps that is appropriate this early on.

actually no, you're wrong, that's not what i meant. i preordered the collector's edition and i'm having fun with it. the game isn't revolutionary and doesn't have too many 'new' features... but, what it does, it does very well. it looks and runs great, and i've had a fairly smooth experience with the launch so far (stable, no queues, minimal lag, not much downtime etc).

what i am saying is that let's not pretend that the game itself is vastly different from wow. i'm not disagreeing that there are differences, just that they don't change the fact that this is another standard mmo.

flying and aerial combat is a nice change, and the pvp design seems to be better (ai controlled faction balancing). in the later levels i've found myself grinding, and i hope that doesn't increase. some odd design decisions here and there that i find frustrating as well, but you gotta learn to live with it.

That. The game isn't bad, it's polished, it's graphics are really nice, it's stable for the most part but except the flying and the PvP....it's really not vastly different. I know every MMO is very similar to the next but there are subtle differences in all of them. However, i PERSONALLY don't see the big attraction to AION as many claim they see. I probably let it go after my 37 days are over.

Better then me, at this juncture i'd rather play wow then this. Simply because this game doesn't feel like it does anything better then wow. PvP might be better, who knows but I haven't even seen any yet. So I don't see myself going on with this game.

yeah kinda my sentiments too. I actually enjoy Champions online quite a bit more, if just for the unique abilities and travel powers in that game.

All of these above from my list are really not graphics related at all. Most of these have either not been in other games, or very very few if any at all. So I don't know what you are talking about. The combat feel is significantly different especially if you look at the duration of combat. (Past about lvl 15)

1) agreed
2) not unique at all, many games have this mechanic
5) Armor look can be adjusted in many mmo's
8) Same for many games out there
9) again, nothing unique.
11) has been done also, long lasting appeal remains to be seen.
12) i don't see this as positive or negative actually.

like the post above said, apart from flight and a well designed pvp system, none of those are going to significantly or fundamentally change the game. unique races/mobs/environments? every game has it's own lore and cosmology... the ability to change armor is a minor (but nifty) aesthetic issue. crafted armor is the best because this game doesn't endgame raiding right?
