Your 1st 3D accelerated experience ?!?

My first accelerated experience was seeing VQuake on a friends Pentium 90 with a 3D Blaster PCI(Rendition V1000). I was amazed...

My most memorable 3D experience was seeing Quake 2 accelerated for the first time on a friends Pentium 130 with a Stealth 2 S220(Rendition V2000). I will never forget seeing all the colored lighting for the first time. No game has ever impressed me that much as seeing Quake 2 in openGL for the first time.

I fondly remember playing Quake 2 and Half-Life with my 2 Pure3D II in SLI, the original SLI. I still have both of them and would like to build about a Pentium 450-600 with them. Sort of a "retro" system to play Quake, Quake2, Sin, Half-Life, etc. All the golden oldies of acceleration.

my first 3D card was a S220 Rendition, that blew me away, much better than my Stealth 2000 with 4 mb.

The one thing that a lot of people are saying in this thread is how much of a change their first good 3D card made, and how good the games were back then. I also agree with the post that said it is all going cinematic, HL2 is almost boring.

I collect old 3D cards, have two of those S220, a few i740's that actually do use system memory to store textures, a celeron 300a oc to 450 using a TNT 16 MB and two 12 MB V2 in SLi, 256 MB ram. Now THAT is good 3D, Unreal still looks fantastic. I also have a Voodoo 3 3000 16 MB card that runs fantastic, among other cards. I have a 9500 soft modded to 9700 runs great, and a 6800nu unlocked to 16 pipes. But those old games look so sweet on the older cards, and they are still a lot of fun to play. Now I am considering selling the 6800 for cash and just play older stuff ha ha. So much for FarCry, HL2, and EQ2. If I do keep the 6800 it would be for EQ2 so I can play online with my son. Yeah, I should keep it. It soon will be a classic as well.

I remember it well. I finally got a job that payed a decent amout and went out and got a Monster 3D card for my Pentium 120mmx with 64megs of EDO ram computer. Added the glquake stuff to my quake and I was in heaven. I couldnt believe the difference in games.

It was the original Quake. That was my first LAN gaming experience also. I worked at a local PC shop, there was 5 of us, and when the store would close, we each had a top of the line 486/5x86 system with Monster 3D cards in em, we'd sit down, and game our asses off. We sorta got to doing this during work also.

Then Quake 2 came out, and life as I knew it ended. Quake 2 hooked me into FPS'es forever, and nothing since has even come close to the Threewave CTF Q2 days. When I heard Q4 was gonna have Q2 style gameplay, I wept at the thought. Could it possibly be, the game I loved so much, canyon diving and crossing the map at breakneck speeds with a grappling hook, could it be back.

My guess is no, because the Doom3 engine is being used, and that to me seems more like eyecandy than gameplay. I don't know if they'll ever make a game as good as Q2 ever again. Thats just my thoughts. UT2K4 CTF came pretty damn close I gotta admit. But it still wasn't "all that"
