I'm sure this has been talked about before but I remember in vivid detail my first 3D accelerator experience...

Everyone on the block was playin' Unreal Tournament !!

So I bought a copy and fired it up on my AMD K6-2 500.... Awsome game but how do I enable Direct 3D??...

I tell ya how ... go buy a 3dFX Voodoo 3000 PCI card thats how !!! :D

let me tell you ... I will never forget the first time i fired it up ...

HOLY HELL ...THAT SHITE LOOKS AWSOME !!

Just curious to know if anyone has similar fond memories of the golden age of "accelerated" graphics ??

i remember i got a demo for SpecOps waaay back when, and the demo required a 3d accelerator... well i didnt have one, so i downloaded some 3d accel emulator or something, haha...

but i do remember the first time i played quake 1. i was like

Pfft... I vividly remember the first time I ran Tombraider with my Diamond Monster3D graphics card. Man, those graphics looked unbeatable at the time. NHL 98 was frigin awesome as well!

That Pentium166 seemed like a monster at the time!

GLquake baby! On my Diamond Monster 3d 4meg, overclocked of course.
800x600 of 3d goodness!

first cards i bought were a pair of diamond monster 3d 2's and i had them in sli, i played quake 2 at 1024x768 at 60+fps and my friends were all jealous :D

GLQuake! Shit, $200 just to buy a Diamond Monster 3D back in the day... and I was a poor school kid back then

My first was a Diamond Viper V550 32MB TNT card. I had that until I upgraded to the MX200. Haven't looked back since.

not my vigin experience but i also remember the opening scene in Unreal 1 with the waterfall, birds flying, great soundtrack...!!!

I was more awe-struck back then than with current games like doom3 or half-life2...
(although the later still made me stop and say "WOW" this looks great !)

Shogo: MAD with a Creative Labs Riva TNT 16MB. Also played Half-Life about the same time.

ATI 32 Xpression Mach 32.

It predates the Voodoo1.

The Mach32 was horrible GPU if that's what you call it.

I was playing a special accelerated version of Mechwarrior - it rocked.

Final Fantasy 7, and then GLQuake on a Diamond Monster 3D card here.

Unreal Tournament on a TNT2. That's what got me into computer gaming as an obsession.

Wing Commander! 486dx2 66mhz 16mb ram

Wing Commander was "3d", but it did not have any 3d acceleration.

Dark Forces was my first with a 3D accelerator... Voodoo Rush!

Diamond Monster 3D. Tried out the demos, and WOW! That soccer game was amazing ... you could rotate the field in real time :p Mechwarrior II was fantastic looking as well. But what really did it for me was Quake GL. Went from 320x240 software to 512x384 accelerated, and what an amazing difference! Could also get up to 640x480, but then my FPS went below 30.

Unreal Tournament was the first game for which I specifically bought a card. I wanted the sexy S3TC textures so bought a Savage 4. The less said about that card, the better. Graphics were gorgeous in UT, but the continual lockups online sucked.

First 3d experiance was super mario 64 and to be honest I didnt realise there was a difference from 2d to 3d
In my defense I was 7 :p

a game called Slave Zero i think, then on my own PC UT99. That game blew me away with its graphics.

I'm gonna have to say Dark Forces was also my first time with 3d Accelerated Graphics.

First for me? Alien Vs. Predator. I bought the game as soon as it came out. I was able to play skirmish mode but I couldnt' play single player. So I went out and got a 3DFX VooDoo 2. My mouth dropped a few more inches. Then I played Quake 2, Half-Life and Team Fortress Classic.

First 3D card was the "Sierra Screamin' 3D" card (what a great name). I can't remember what 3D accelerated game I played first, but for some reason I'm thinking it was Tomb Raider (could have been descent). I do remember being in complete awe at what real 3d acceleration looked like. I would switch between software and hardware mode, just to see how much better it looked.

It was actually a really good card, pretty much the first 2D+3D single card solution, but it got toasted by a lightning strike.

GL Quake .. Seeing that for the first time 3D Accelerated. Wow.. just.. wow.

Paid $150 for my Matrox Mystique card. That was cool. Then I bought an m3D add on card (PowerVR) for $150. Bought Unreal. I was blown away. About 6 months later, I saw the m3D for $5 on clearance. In future patches on Unreal, the PowerVR was disabled.

The first level outdoors was AWESOME. It took my breath away. Nothing has compared to that lately. CoD had the wow factor, too, I guess.

AMD K6/200 OCed to 240. :) Sweet!

Either Quake 2 running on a Voodoo1, or Mech2: Titanium Edition running on ... well, probably a Voodoo1.

My experience was identical except that my K6-2 was the 450, not the 500. UT99 popped my cherry!

My first 3D experience was a maze game on my Apple IIGS. It was like a controllable version of the Win95 screensaver but looked like 100X better and was much faster.

ahh I still have my diamond monster 3d, at the time I couldnt believe I was spending $200 on something for my computer but playing mechwarrior 2 on it was wow, I think the next game I ended up playing was decent freespace.

It was the original Tomb Raider using the Speedy3D api of my Rendition Verite 1000, I loved that video card. Its still in use in an old 486DX2 :)

Quake 2 and Unreal on a Voodoo Banshee. I've primarilaly been a PC gamer ever since.(used to be a console whore :) )
