It wouldn't suprise me if sony was waiting in the bushes to pounce on this
guy, knowing that this cc number fiasco was going to happen, and announcing it on a harmless thing like the other os feature so they could later blame this bigger problem on him.

They offer no debatable points or even attempt to substantiate their perspective at all. Since they will only answer with childish insults and poor evasion tactics like "you fell into the trap I was laying all along" and "aha! your response was just as I expected" type of juvenile bullshit, we can only assume these misanthropes have been pwned by Anon before, perhaps as collateral damage, or humiliated on encyclopediadramatica.ch, or run out of a chan, and now lash out whenever they think they can get away with it and call anyone who calls them on their bullshit "trolls". Perhaps they are actually scientologists, which would also explain the defensiveness, the evasiveness, the absence of reason and logic, and even the attacks in the first place.

When you start making remarks about the other person's state... that they have to be trying "so damn hard" or that they must be "angry"... You're telling everyone else one of two things.

I was just having a little fun at techrat's expense. If that makes it trolling so be it. I don't take discussions dealing with religion seriously on this forum. There is no point. Most people here are not mature enough or well versed enough in religion to produce anything remotely resembling a good discussion on the matter and nor is this the proper place to deal with those issues. So when it pops up directed at me I either ignore it or have a little fun.

No, DDoS simply floods a site with too much data that causes it to shut down, that is all a DDoS does.

it doesnt lead to anything else, if someone got in another way it is because their systems were insecure long before the DDoS occured.

Wrong, you don'y agree to an EULA on your GM you buy your car and can do what you want with it, your PS3 is "licensed" and you agree to abide by sonys terms to use it, also no one forced you to buy a GM car or stay at a hotel,there is no law that states you can not sleep in your car and you must go to a hotel either, your comparison is moot.

This whole fucking notion that you didnt buy the PS3 you licensed it is exactly whats wrong with our fucked up society.

What would you do if you did buy a car then after getting in it for the first time a giant screen popped up with a EULA you had to accept before driving it? Never mind the fucking thing is already paid for and GM will NEVER refund your money.

Its criminal. These companies are selling you the product THEN popping this big contract on you claiming its their machine not yours. The worst part is there are corrupt judges actually backing this illegal shit. What are you supposed to do? You buy a game these days and when you get it home you are greeted by an EULA. If you dont accept sorry no refunds so you are either forced to play by their rules, break the EULA or just have a nice $60 coaster. Its absurd and yet its being upheld!

People are free to do what they want with their PS3, the EULA only comes up when you connect it to PSN which is a private network. If they want to stay on PSN, they need to accept the new terms.
 
Not really a console guy so i'm not up to date on this. But what government agencies are involved in this and how high is it on their priority list? There's potentially billions of dollars about to be moved out of the US economy. Wouldn't that raise some red flags on some three letter agency(ies)?

Its a house subcommittee that is interested in answers from Sony. There are two three letter agencies involved though: The FTC and the FBI.
 
Just did a quick google and apparently, they also hacked a few online bank companies in response to wiki leaks?

If this keeps up, and they keep abusing their online anonimity, the various governments are gonna be justified in locking down our online access and make us traceable by default. Piracy is an issue between private companies, but once you start involving (taxable) money, the government's gonna make it a federal matter.

What's keeping them from doing the same, start calling ISPs for their logs and hop ISP's until they get to the perpetrators? Apparently, the only reason they couldn't do that against pirates is because they're a civil matter. But a massive hack like this (All that potential tax is in danger!) ought to be bumped up to Federal right?

In the link you posted, they didn't even catch the right guy. The caught the guy who happened to have an open wifi network (that someone was using to do bad things).

I would guess that anyone involved in hacking Sonys servers didn't do it from their home... not to mention they more than likely we're using web proxies to hide themselves. They might get caught (who ever did it), but I'm not holding my breath.
 
Actually, they did catch him. The point is, that out of an entire country, they narrowed it down to the room unbelievably fast. And much like what happened in the article, just a bit more footwork and they'll find the culprint (Hey, you can't expect everything to be handed on a platter), even if he was piggybacking from starbucks.

Web Proxies are still traceable if you have the ISP's on your side. Normally, getting anything out of them is like pulling teeth, that is, unless you've got the authority to get them to give it up. It's just a matter how much manpower you're willing to spend. How many US citizens were compromised? Is the number large enough to warrant a series of digital manhunts?


My biggest concern is not whether or not they'll actually catch him, but the repercussions of it, especially if it shows that the FBI is incapable of resolving this kind of attack with their current tools. There have already been issues put forward about the government wanting to control the internet (Kill switch, filtering, IP monitoring, Service segregation, etc.). This case could very well be significant in pushing those forward... for the sake of national security of course.

One thing america is known for is their agressiveness in problem solving (ex: Homeland Security, patriot act, etc.), how far off is the possibility of the ISP getting some kind of new protocol, rule or memo?


I'm actually interested now in how this'll turn out and, if possible, see what the FBI has tried so far, and how it'll affect new internet policies.

Single cases of digital theft isn't much, and hackers have always been regarded more as a nuisance. But this recent case, involving 20million citizens, with them blatant enough to openly declare their intention, and actually pulling it off. It's now a whole new ballgame.
