Some more cryengine 3.

Is it just me or do some of those look worse than CryEngine2?

it would be nice to see games with levels like that apartment, rather than sandy beaches and palm trees.

maybe a new nolf style game???, just throwing it out there.

So the engine can render shadows? Not impressed. You want to see a good looking engine, go check out Project Offset.

i heard of project offset in early 2006,

for those who don't know http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yhd6okJjLbY

now that's a team that knows what they are doing (from a live rendering perspective), i mean thats some pretty intensive stuff and that was back in 06, and it still surpasses what we see in games today, they have some pretty cool wind and particle technology.

not sure how well it would translate to consoles, but it is a good example of how to exploit loopholes in real time processing.

there's a whole page dedicated to offsets engine tech.

but there's already a thread for this.

The point is the method of rendering the lighting. Techdemos released publicly are a rather pointless statement because they generally demonstrate things that are, forgive me, far beyond the pale of the average person's education or intellect. They seem to be moving toward a method that provides similar visual quality to deferred lighting at far higher framerates, hence the consolization of the engine.

Scripted exhibitions have no value as far as I am concerned. Show us what real gameplay looks like and state the hardware used to perform such demonstration.

Excuse me if my bluntness to the subject is offensive.

To be more precise, its being developed to allow better scaling for consoles. Supposedly, the full potential of the engine is still on par with Cryengine 2. We'll have to see.

Scalability and efficiency is ALWAYS a good thing. If they manage to take Cryengine 2, keep it looking as good and make it more efficient, I'd be happy...not to say that we can't do better than Cryengine2, but Cry2 is still able to make single card solutions cry...what will it do to consoles?

Plus, we need more than just the wonderful UE3 engine (texture pop in anyone?) Diversity is ALWAYS a good thing...because as Cry2 stands, it is so far out there no one cares. Crysis was a tech demo...if they make it so it can run on more people's systems, it may become a viable compete for UE3.

Seems that this thread was flooded with the same people that criticized Crysis, because they couldn't run it on their 3 year old machine @ high settings...

These are meant to show off the capabilities of the engine. This is NOT a game, so NO gameplay footage exists.

And kudos to Crytek. Along with id, they seem to be the only company that is actually making some evolutions in terms of graphics and actually pushing the envelope. This is what makes enthusiasts...enthusiasts.

I wonder how the pc version of a game using this engine will look vs the console version.

light sources are still point sources. Until we can give a light source width these engines are always going to have to use tricks to get the image to look right.

Still, its pretty impressive.

edit: ouch the irony in my immidiate response to that practically hurts.

I was just about to jump in and say how terrible crysis really is even on my "new" gaming computer... but yeah, in actuallity crysis is over 2 years old and this machines just coming up on its third birthday.

what do you expect from a console focused engine?

Some of the screenshots look impressive, which show off effects I didn't notice in Crysis/Warhead. Particularly the indoor one with the floors reflecting the light and illuminating the walls. I recall vividly how horrible some of the lighting in Warhead was indoors. The first thing that came to mind was the resort area near the end of the first level. The entire room of the structures were completely illuminated despite the absence of a light source.

A console-focused engine is what the whinging PC community deserves after a million people cried "unoptimised!" because their poor 6800GTs couldn't run Crysis at 1920x1200 with max settings and AA.

The good news? Crytek will provide another two years' worth of boohooing. Yay!

Still the best engine out there. It doesn't really need any improvements in rendering quality over what Cryengine 2 could do on the PC, but you can bet that they've made some big improvements in efficiency from the console work.

From the videos posted, it seems that the global illumination technique is a lot quicker than deferred lighting.

Looks good to me...the indoor scenes look so much better....part of this is the stylization of that apartment as much as the engine...but for those who got into modding - cryengine was GLORIOUS For making ANYTHING outdoor...

the minute you tried to add a non-premade building though...youd be better off gouging out your eyes. Sure the engine has suitable means for doing this - but not for the average modder. Makes me miss playing with hammer / source for making complex indoor levels...

I'd be happier than a pig in shit if cryengine kept outdoor leveling as easy and powerful as it is now, but gave an effective in editor approach for designing indoors enivorments...and made a few tweaks for improved performance. Hopefully, itll debut with a game worth playing, too...

These are technology shots designed to demonstrate one or two particular features, they won't represent and overall pretty scene pleasing to the eye.

it's being developed for the consoles which means we'll probably see a bunch of constraints for the consoles being ported over to the PC, although the general engine cabaility should be pretty good, it was originally written for the PC so the groundwork is done.

I can't wait to see how amazingly bad its going to look in 720p or lower in low settings on the consoles, I think it's going to put things into perspective for those people who had trouble running crysis on their PC's.

+1 ..

none of those shots will be at 720p at above 30fps on consoles. i guarantee you this mate.

Sounds great to me. Being a PC gamer that is just one less piece of trash I have to sift through on the shelf.

Consoles: Curing the PC infection one game at a time. :D

yea by killing off the good as well as the bad bacteria that causes the infection meaning you kill everything ie no good pc games anymore

YES! A great cleansing. That is what the development community needs. Now your thinking! And with this purge will come new and fresh ideas.

I was pretty skeptiical at first, but 4 player (perhaps more on PC) co-op on a 32km map with an editor?

Come on, that's full of win.

The game aint out yet, give it time.

I like the feel of this game better then its competition as well.....just imo.

Oh ye of little faith. I've had crysis running well on a 7800GTX at 1024x768, mostly medium settings. When you factor in the improvements made to cryengine 3 plus console-specific optimizations, 30fps at medium to high settings is quite attainable.

haha, we'll see :)

Hey guys,

Basically we're seeing more and more film quality lighting effects coming over to games. It's amazing to see some of these rendered in real-time. I setup a simple scene to visually demonstrate. You guys underestimate the power of global illumination, and the impact it can have on realism.

Scene: A box with three colored spheres. There's a single spotlight on the left side of the room pointing at the spheres.

Rendered with ray traced shadows.

Increased light angle on the shadows. Since they're ray traced, you can see they appear softer from the source.

Global illumination added. Light now bounces and picks up colors from the scene.
S8cHN.png

Increased effects of global illumination. Remember, we're still dealing with a single light source. You can clearly see the colors of the spheres being picked up by the global illumination photons and being projected on the floor and walls.

Instead of using global illumination, let's try to fake it by adding another light source. In this image, global illumination is turned off, and an ambient light is added to brighten the scene. Not anywhere close to achieving a similar effect.
IS0fd.png

In games now, they can try to better fake the effects of global illumination by baking the colors and shadows onto the textures. For example, a red box is in a white room. If you know this box is never going to move, the wall textures can be carefully painted with hues of red to simulate the effect. But what happens when the light source or objects are moving? This is when you need to calculate GI in real-time. In the cryengine demos, you can see these effects when the light source is moving outside the window. When the light hits an object, it bounces, and picks up color.

Indeed, but it's impressive even for the PC. I just said I saw nothing like that in Crysis/Warhead. So it seems there will be a few extras that CE3 will have over CE2 for the PC.

And when those same people have finally got a new video card, they are now complaining that there is nothing better looking than Crysis out.
