Server questions

okay i want to set up a file server on a network for 5 computers in my house. all will have xp on them and what not. im not sure though whats the best server software for me to use. i want a simple solution where i can dump batch amounts of data for later use. i dont need it to be a power house server or anything like that. just something simple that wont be hard to set up.

THinking about using a 450mhz comp with 3 40 gigs in. would you consider maybe bumping this up to a 1 ghz comp. what kind of speed gain would i get. again dont need power now but would like to get software that i can transfer to a more powerful computer when my needs grow.

I would seriously consider using linux and samba on your server box. it is easy to set up and works like a charm.

There are alot of choices. As said above you could go with linux and configure it and set it all up. You could get a demo version of Win2k3, or there's ClarkConnect and there is also SME Server. SME server is alot like Microsoft Small Business server.

did you just put easy and linux in the same sentance?


I think if you want to do it "legal". Linux is the smart way to go. clark connect is pretty good to start out with.
