~PORTAL! Thread~

Hmm...

I thought I remember reading somewhere that the character from portal was going to be in the next HL installment as herself.

Maybe she is, I haven't played ep2 yet, but I find it hard to imagine being able to identify her.

Portal isn't a narrative game, it's a puzzle game, where you make portals to get around obstacles to get to the end and there isn't much more to it than that.

Except for the brilliant Turret and Computer dialog :p

The whole thing is very self contained.

Bah, I missed it. What level was it on?

Btw, color=222222, and for quotes 333333.

Yeah I know about the colors, professor. It's not a big deal to me, as this game is only a few hours long and the plot is very thin anyway.

Did you not see the powerpoint presentation that was running in one of the offices?

Yeah I did, that and the line in the final song were the couple of references that I was referring to. Other than those there are no real links to the HL universe, no characters, technology, aliens etc.

Did anyone else think the game was ridiculously easy? I mean, I haven't done any of the challenges or anything, but I would have thought they could have made this super difficult. I was kind of hoping for it, using physics a lot more, and a lot more puzzle work. I just didn't find that.

Still fun. Will pick up on the bonus maps before long. I'm sure the modding community will come out with stuff as well. :)

Sorry. :(

Could I still get that level with the slideshow?

It's after you get out of the rat run, there's two, but I don't think there's levels as such once you go beyond test 19 so it's sort of hard to say exactly where they are. The slides are just about the company running the tests being in competition with Black Mesa for government funding

It's fun. I think when custom maps are produced this gameplay type will really shine.

Took me about 2.5 hrs start to finish, it is a little on the easy side but that's where the challenge maps and user created maps come into play :)

PowerPoint was funny, 15 might have been my favorite, I didn't get any computer voice/narration...should I have? Does anyone know if the 30,000 ft fall has to be one continuous fall or is it cumulative? I was falling for what seemed to be at least 5 minutes and didn't get anything.

Overall lots of fun

It is hard to aim quickly with an Xbox 360 controler. You make the connection.

I really liked the game, I hope somehow they incorperate the storyline into the HL universe some how.

Now have some cake. :D

Now off to Ep2.

I really enjoyed this, even though I finished in 2.5 hours. I gotta try the advanced maps and the challenges now!

PS. Anyone else enjoy poetry along the way? I know I have a screen shot of a favorite Dickinson poem.

PPS. The cake is a lie.

PPPS. Remember that time I lied? I was like....and then you were...

I think that bit was the first time I actually lolled for real, as opposed to merely chuckling, while playing the game

That happened to me too. You don't actually get the achievement until you stop falling. What I did was set up an infinite portal loop.

What do you expect? It's a PC game being ported to a console. It's not meant for a controller.

the narration is what makes the game. if you didn't get it, you need to go back and try again.

You didn't make the connection; I'll dumb it down further.

The puzzles are ridiculously easy because it needs to be playable with an Xbox 360 controller. Thus the PC gets another "dumbed down" game.

Regardless I really like the game. The final boss and credit song is great.

Anyone else hear the Portal AI voice in EP2? I could have swore that I heard her a couple of times. I haven't played much of it yet.

Anyone else manage to fail the bonus challenges by "cheating"? I can't get rid of the cheater status on one of them thanks to bypassing everything with two cleverly placed portals.

The puzzles aren't all ridiculously easy, I had to cheat once... no-clip into the other room because I saw no physical way into the room... I spent 30 minutes running around the same area trying to figure it out, finally just no-clipped through and kept going... The challenge ones definitely make the challenges harder, I beat the first 3 and haven't even bothered with the last 3, those little robots scare the shit out of me...

I may try to make some puzzles... :p

I want to go back through the game, just to grab some quotes from You Know Who. Does anyone know of a program to read the sound and music files in the game? I'd love to use a few of the quotes on my PC, and that song haunts me; I need it on my music player!

Yeah, I was just thinking that. I'll record it, I think, and then I will have it and it will be lovely.

Only been playing for about 30 minutes but I love it so far. However, the comedy is much more entertaining than the puzzles. :D

every room is solvable ;)

If you listen to the commentary, they state that it isn't machine read, but instead a recording from a female voice actor that has the pitch and such adjusted.

level 18 is the one im at ... and im having a lot of problem... im stuck at one place with a rotative thing shooting ball of energy . What the fuck i need to do .. i saw the lower floor , do i need to use that ?

any help would be appreciated... been stuck there 1h.

Take out the sentry's with it by placing portals in line of the sentry's one by one. After that, make a portal that will direct it to the place it has to be put in, and while its flying in the direction, portal right up to press the red button which will open the door. I know this is a confusing explanation, but it's the best I can :D

Pretty easy game, beat it this morning in 2.3 hours. The ending was awesome, I was laughing my ass off.

Can't wait to try some of the bonus maps when I get home from work :D

Also, every map is solvable, you might need to reuse portals to get through things (*coughrocketscough*)

Oh man, I just completed it, definitely one of the best endings ever. A great boss fight and that song was the icing on the cake :D.

o_O, was my boss broken? He didn't do anything in terms of fighting back, just went boom :p

SPOILERS!!

Ok so, one of the little "hidden" rooms with all the writing on the walls, one of them has a username/password written down on it, login cjohnson and password tier3, you can use these to log onto www.aperturescience.com and now you have access to all the commands (or at least more)

Note poked around enough to find anything useful other than a notes file which is just some quirky history...

How it fits into the HL universe should be interesting, but I reckon 10 to 1 you get the portal device as freeman and need it for something, probably the last boss in ep3

Did anyone else watch the powerpoint slideshow comparing Aperture to Black Mesa? I loved the proposed budget slide.
