Now or Wait?

Lol yeah I'm not holding my breath for Crysis or DX10. If games mean everything to you, it's far easyer to get a console. :p

Besides nothing in the crysis demos I've seen so far have required DX10. If I recall right, it will be playable also in DX9 - nobody would want to shoot themselves in the leg by supporting only a niche market.

rofl. tried the console thing for years and years. i moved to pc gaming for a reason and its gonna stay that way.

a niche market? lol if its only a niche, why would ATI and Nvidia put DX10 support in their new cards? wouldn't they just say, eh fuck it...we can wait til the big DX10 games come out and we'll upgrade our chips. otherwise we wont make any money.

riggggggghhhht

Crysis DX9 vs DX10. Mindblowing right? Must have..

Definately worth investing into Vista eh?

shot4_sbs.jpg

Or could it be that the engine itself is the only thing so revolutionary and worth getting?

If you're in the IT industry now, I would wager you won't be employed in 2-3 years.

That's funny because I think more people will lose their jobs as a result of failed migration to Vista in the business world. Megacosts with no real world benefits.

But don't worry, I know why many here attack anyone who wants to caution people from rash decisions..

You're all early adopters. And what's early adopters worst nightmare? That's right, having invested time and money to something that never makes it to mainstream. That's why some of you are so very sore to anyone who want's to pull brakes on it.

What you failed to note is that the actual comparisions you are referencing were taken Feb of last year.
Not only has DX10 improved since then, I also noticed you picked the poorest example from the batch.

That's right! People can use a search engine to research the FUD you post, go direct to the source and learn more information about it ;)

have you been paying attention to any other threads that have been posted around here regarding the new shit in vista? DX10 is a big selling point, but is by far not the only one. and this still doesn't help you with your argument comparing vista to ME...

So your argument was in effect two advertisments on new technologies? Do you believe everything they say in adverts? :D

As I said the difference will be marginal. Most of the stuff that impressed people in the demos were based on the engine itself, not DX10. But.. you can wait for your game and buy a new computer and OS if you wish.. I'm not going to.

Maybe in 2-3 years when the next OS will come - maybe then I have time to betatest, being unemployed and all.

adverts....from two tech news sites....lol

right......

read thru the articles...course since you don't want to and would like to keep spreading FUD...thats ok i guess.

Yeah they were adverts. I guess source criticism is an unknown concept for you lol!

and i guess backing up your original argument is an unknown concept for you as well. congrats on moving it away from the Vista to ME comparison. Now would you like to get back to that or are we gonna continue the argument of whether DX10 over DX9 is better since you can't finish what you started?

Thanks for proving my point even further. Is that difference worth $800 in hardware/OS?

It's cheaper to get a console. And hey - it will work out of the box too. :D

You must be blind if you don't see the difference...

And we all know the #1 rule in hardware: It doesn't get cheaper as demand increases and time goes on.

I also like how you blow the cost out of the water. Newegg has DX10 cards for $100.

Oh, and also show me what console uses DirectX 10 since you said it is cheaper to buy a console???

Well duh, where did I state that I made a direct technical comparison between Vista and ME? The fact that MS has the next gen OS already in the assemblyline proves that Vista will be another switchover product like ME. In 2-3 years you guys will have been tricked into buying DX11 or DX12 hardware and you'll be screaming FUD again to the people giving advice about either keeping the hopefully by then matured Vista or *gasp* even the stoneage XP which will still work flawlessly as it does now.

Whether or not the difference is worth $x to people is for those people to decide. You may say no, I may say yes. What is a valid discussion is whether or not there is a difference or if one is demonstrably "better" setting price/cost aside.

And as for console's working out of the box - didn't PS3's require a firmware update the first day they were available or am I remembering something else?

I see the difference and it's not like it's a jump from 2D to 3D. And good luck on trying to run crysis on a $100 'DX10 capable' graphics card ROFL! That's almost as good as the 7000 series with 512Mb ram stuck on them for marketing.

What's funny is you think you are proving some point. All you are doing is explaining progress.

Man, you are ignorant. Your original FUD was that DX10 required an $800 upgrade:

Is that difference worth $800 in hardware/OS?

I guess now that you've been proved wrong (yet again), you have to twist around what you and I previously said in order to keep arguing your point (Which I guess also changes)?

Well duh, where did I state that I made a direct technical comparison between Vista and ME?<snip>

You made a blanket comparison between ME and Vista by bluntly stating that "Vista is the next Windows ME".... and that's it. That was my whole point when I asked you to back it up. Your retort was weak and stupid, and the fact is you can't back that statement up because it is noting more than bullshit. It may be your opinion, but that is all it is.

Unless you can give some fact based comparisons between Vista and any previous Microsoft OS, your best bet would be to just leave that one alone...

DX10 is huge part of Vista, but there is more to it than that. You don't like it, fine... I personally don't give a shit rather you like it or not, but a lot of people come here to learn, and bullshit statements like the ones I'm seeing here do nothing but add confusion to an already controversial topic..

Vista is the next Windows ME. It will disappear from the shelves in 2-3 years and be laughed upon later.

you made that comparison and failed to back it up....so basically all you did was come in here to troll. gg

I made an assumption that this will happen based on the information about the next OS given by MS and the troubled start Vista has had - just like ME had with w2k/XP on the door. I can't back up something I assume will happen in the future. Can you back up exactly what you will eat 2 weeks from now? Duh..

The only thing that is sure is that we'll see in 2-3 years as I said. ;)

every OS has had a troubled start...ME in particular was a piece of shit OS. very buggy out of the box. vista has not crashed on me once in the past 2 months.

and yes...i can back up what i will eat 2 weeks from now...meal plans for a diet help me with that. :p

Consider this, why do you want a new system? Is there an app or game that you want to run? If it's something that is yet to be released, or something that your current system can already run, then waiting is definitely the thing to do.
For example, I can run every game I own easily on my current system, but assuming GTA4 eventually comes out on PC, I may have to ask myself if I need something new. Until that time, hardware will only gradually get cheaper and faster.
Additionally, Vista is still in it's infancy, so it suck now, but will be somewhat better later.

Ahhh, intelligent discussion!!
What about security? Even if you have everything you want right now, what about security? Obviously Vista improves on that much.

Additionally, Vista is still in it's infancy, so it suck now,

At least, it was intelligent discussion until that last comment...

Your timeline is a little off...Windows ME came out after Windows 2000 did (by 7 months), and only 13 months before Windows XP. The successor to Vista is not expected for at least 2 years, so at best the comparison is a huge stretch...

Besides - I would fully expect a software company to be working on the next iteration once one is launched, if not beforehand.

#2 Also, I have a lot of progs that I can't afford to update right now that I would like to
That statement suggests to me that you expect your financial situation to improve in the future. It seems that this implies that spending money now is ``expensive'' for you, while spending money later is less expensive. If that is the case and you are able to accomplish all the tasks that you need to accomplish using the current OS (win2k), why purchase a new OS right now? From my perspective you are not losing anything trying to run win2k on your new system and if you are not satisfied with that, spending money (later) to purchase either XP or Vista.
