Network pics thread

Somewhat network related, I converted a physical disk to a virtual disk. Then I said hey this file is fucking huge, let me try this teracopy shit that people talk about.

It seemed to have finished, but my VHD was gone from the source location and destination location. Needless to say I was sad.

Here's my 2nd go at making it into a VHD, I'll just be dragging and dropping this time.

winimage ftw...

also something absolutely ridiculous I discovered yesterday is that Hyper-V does not support 4k disks. There goes using IOSafes as backup disks.

I just spotted this from one of our internal Linux servers

uptime.png

Thats a bit of uptime!

Nice uptime!
I found a similar case when we rewired a couple racks over the summer. One of the DNS servers had been running for about 3~4 years straight. We were afraid that it wouldn't come back up :p

Anyone in the PNW (OR/WA) needing a rack? My favorite ewaste place just got a Dell rack with 2 3000w APC's in. I believe they want $100 for it all.

Wow- if only! Just been moving my a/v cab from the living room to the utility room which has prompted me to start redoing cabling throughout the house. Still a lot to do but making steady progress:

Old cab location:

Old cable drops from upstairs where there were already holes for the pipes to/from the boiler:

New hole in the ceiling:

First 2-port jack in the master bedroom:

New cable drops:

New comms cab:

itickett, for you fiber to the garage, (I've been thinking of doing this) did you just run regular indoor fiber or did you use an outdoor rated cable?

Just regular fiber as it's going through some pretty hench conduit and it's probably only about 10M stretch

Just regular fiber as it's going through some pretty hench conduit and it's probably only about 10M stretch

I've been really thinking about this and I could get 40 m of multimode fiber and run it to my garage. The only problem is there is a stamped concrete between the garage and the house so I can't really bury it.. I was thinking of running conduit along the ground maybe and doing it that way. It gets pretty cold here in winter though (-30 to -40) so I don't know how that would fare on it...

Did a lot of crawling, drilling and crimping this holiday vacation and feel quite accomplished about what I have set up.

I'd appreciate any comments about anything I could do differently/better.

Amazing I can fit all this in our tiny 1,100 sqft house.

Just recieved three fully loaded Fujitsu RX600's, complete with 512GB of RAM in each one. One had a faulty temperature sensor that was replaced quickly. Can't wait to get the beasties up and running. I'll grab some photos when we install six RX200's on Friday and two more Cisco 3750's

lol that was a fun read. :D It's sad the way some companies are run. I like the improvised razor tool. LOL

PCI slot covers are so useful around the data center. :D

Between old RAM and slot covers I have tons of tools for opening boxes and cutting things.

Why is the uplink to the AP not 1G?

Also what program did you lay that sketch out in? Looks nice and clean.

Why is the uplink to the AP not 1G?

Good question. Not sure. The Unifi doesn't seem to connect at above 100 Mbit.

Not a big deal for me though. I live in a very Wifi dense area, so there is tons of interference. Before I got the Unifi, the best connection speed I got with consumer routers (two that came with my Fios and one Netgear WNDR3700) was ~6Mbit/s.

The Unifi us MUCH better at dealing with this, and now I can actually connect at full rated speeds. Most devices connect at 65Mbit. The Mac seems to be the best though, and can usually connect at 130Mbit, so it is the only one that really is affected, unless there is heavy use from multiple clients.

Edit:

Turns out the port on the Unifi is only 100Mbit. Forums suggest this is a moot point as while connection speeds on 2.4Ghz can be up to 300Mbit/s the actual real life transfer speeds are typically rarely over 30mbit/s due to overhead and interference.. The wired connections don't suffer as much from this problem and thus much more of that 100mbit is available.

Also what program did you lay that sketch out in? Looks nice and clean.

I used MS Visio 2010, and made sure to import pictures of the devices in question with white backgrounds :p

Just won this bad boy last night, http://www.ebay.com/itm/360423294904?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649#shId

Payed about $50 for the item, then ended up paying about $20 for the shipping instead of $45.

Cant wait for it to get here, little overkill for untangle but she may get used somewhere else :)

you just paid 70$ to much, you are going to hate that server, trust me. Friend ran untangle on one and it was LOUD heat whore and annoying.. Friend that had his, it now sits on the floor and his kids jump around on it and screw with it because it was like EOL 30 years ago LOL ( not litterally but you get the point )

I've got to say fuck fujitsu and their nonstandard heatsink mounting posts.

Like i said the plan was untangle but at the moment its still up in the air, it could change.

I have 2 DL360 G4's now with the same specs (18.2 x2 tho.) that i use for test web hosting, and I've never had any issues with them.
Currently my untangle box for my client network runs on a DL360 G1 Compaq.

So overall im sure ill be happy with it. The main reason why i bought it was for the dual 72.8 giggers. I'll be putting 9.1's in there if i go untangle so the 7.2's may come in handy some day.

As for the purchase i had the money from a previous sale, and if it turns out to be clean and the drives check out good, then i figure money well spent.

Now if any one has a DL380 around with decent specs and drives, let me know... :D

The dl 360's arent that bad, My main server for the longest time was a DL386 G3, Now running mostly nothing, but a DL320 when I am using something

One of my workplaces have a handful they are trying to get rid of. If you're for real and serious, PM me and I shall give you my boss's e-mail address. We have pictures of the servers too.

EDIT: We've also got a SAN and a tape drive available. Here are pictures of everything we have that we're trying to get rid of: http://www.hlrse.net/Qwerty/.penmac_20110902-1532/

I'll bet it's better then my DL380 G3. At idle it pulls down ~350 watts. As it's booting up testing max load it will pull 600-700watts. All that and it only has dual Piii's running at 1.4GHz iirc. Granted it does have 4 15krpm 36GB drives and 3GB of PC133 ecc ram. But still, a intel atom running at 1.6GHz and a SSD would blow this thing out of the water.

You don't know what you're talking about.
I have a similar model.

The fans aren't loud.

THEY'RE DEAFENING!!!!1  :D

Yeah, those things are nice for the 1U form-factor, but are way too noisy to be used within a household, it can even be heard from a basement.

HP has Linux and Windows drivers to control the fans on their servers so you don't have to deal with them screaming at 100%

And a nice tool at that, or you can tweak speedfan as I've done in the past and your good to go.

no time right now to create thumbnails :( will try to do it later this evening
