Minecraft

That station looks awesome greatone! I'll havee to come check it out!

Yea, so, Hardcraft.dyndns.org is not working for me. am I out of date, now that I am back after finals?

My plan on having HashLand back up is running 3 hours behind, but I am fairly confident I will have the server up by prime time. More information on the server... Using OpenVZ servers with Cent OS 5...At minimum the servers are on Core2Quads with at least 8+GB of RAM.

Perhaps Greatone knows more about the quality, and performance the server is at from the specifics I posted above.

Hope to see you all soon on the new server! =D

OpenVZ is virtualization software, same idea I had to move hardcraft and all of my server over to, because the way virtualization handles CPU schedualing, it should technically make the server run smoother.

CentOS is pretty much the standard when it comes to move linux servers, bit dated on features, but super stable. which is more important for what your going to do with it.

with it being a Virtual, that means your most likely going to be sharing that system with others (hardware atleast) you just get your own virtual enviroment.

Minecraft isn't that resource demanding, but the bandwidth you'll have should make for a great expansion of players for you! Good luck!

I know someone in here posted about texture packs they are using, can't find it among all the other stuff. What texture packs are you guys using? I saw the Arid pack and that's not too shabby, anything else good out there? The official MC forums are just too full of junk.

im all vanilla... no flavor

Ok boys/girls I finally had to bite. The game is now mine. I see all this wonderful stuff being built. I just tried Hardcraft.dyndns.org but it was severally lagged. Where is everyone playing

A few of us play on hashland. But the server it's on is being upgraded right now. Ojax will have a new address for it too. Should be up really soon!

Yah well I had planned on it being up 8 hours ago now... I am still waiting for them to reply to my open ticket telling me the server is ready... Last reply from them was 6 hours ago asking that my .zip file be renamed properly...

So coming across 36 hours now since I have paid for, and setup the order for the server. Getting a little impatient now.. =/

Well i appreciate it, even though I'm itching to get back to Dante's Inferno.... :D

:( I'm sure it's very frustrating now...just think of all of your bandwidth that you'll have back!

So out of boredom and the need to consume my time while waiting, I created a forum for HashLand.. I made sure to make the colors awful and seizure inducing..

http://hashland.proboards.com/

Register and come post in the Say Hi thread.. Bullshit until I can get the new server details to everyone.

Edit: I added screenshots of HashLand. Some are from the very first day, and early shots of areas that are much different now. =)

If I read it correctly you have rented a VPS server? If that's the case then you should have SSH and FTP access to it and it's just a matter of transferring the files over (and ofc deal with lolnix naming conventions over Windows ones)? It seems like you are waiting on them for something or other?

Yeah. They are setting up a new physical server for all the new VPS servers ordered in the past 24 hours. So I am waiting for them to give me all FTP and SSH access information still.. The new address, admin information etc still hasn't been sent to me..

So yeah.. waiting.. :p

can you define what you mean by severely lagged?

If you just bought the game, and hadn't played on the server, you do not have build permissions. so everything you try to destroy will pop back into place.

arr4ws thought he was lagging to until he I told him he hit the world's border

anyone ever made a video? if so, what did you use to make it?

Wow, that sounds like some shitty hosting! Who's the company? I have been hosting with Liquidweb and linode and it takes minutes to get a new VPS provisioned there.

It's not lag. You are not allowed up build on that server.

Brand new company Provision Host. Like I said, I have never dealt with server hosting companies, and do not have the time to spend to research every single potential hosting company, referring back and forth with people on various forums, dealing with personal preferences, biases and the like...

This company was from the "seeking and offering" thread on the Official Minecraft forums. They have the best reputation on that forum, and specialize in Minecraft servers.. Now, lemme explain..

I am entirely amateur and naive when it comes to the massive amount of gaming server hosts and their services. Therefore, I used the Official Forums to seek out a host. Like you said, maybe your server host is better, but they weren't advertising Minecraft servers on the forums. The extent I would have to search for these companies, and then almost always, inquire through e-mail, forum, if they are supporting MC servers or not.. Since I have found host websites that do not show any Minecraft server support, but if you e-mail them and inquire, they will let you know or not.. Fcuk that.. I'm not bending over backwards to get a server up.

Now from moderators, plugin developers, and McMyAdmin developers all recommending Provision Host, why wouldn't I look into their services? They ask for 48 hours to setup the server, and have been especially swamped with orders the day I ordered because of a 2 day sale they had on.. They have been running out of Cities for locations faster than they can set them up due to the high demand for MC servers right now, and the absolute LACK of Server hosting companies advertising their services.

However, as I explained, they told me I am waiting in between setting up a brand new physical location and server in which to add all the new server orders onto. This is Minecraft, the game is in Alpha, and therefore, many amateur admins, buggy software, slow server setups, and high demand.

I'm confident it won't take forever, and once its up, it should be smooth sailing afterwords.. I'm taking a highly uncharacteristic, un-skeptical, "Glass is half full" attitude with this.. hehe. :)

Edit: Since I slept all afternoon, I've been up all night, and hope to have some more to tell you all in the next few hours.. I've since setup the forums for the server, where you can go and register and say hello. I also have screenshots up of some of the structures on HashLand, to pass some time while we all wait. :)

It spawned me in water, next to a ledge. I call it severe lag/fps death. I could not ever surface from the water to climb the ladder. I died. respawned and the same thing happened. Only once did I make it up the ladder but I could not do anything beyond that cause I was unable to properly move.

Yeah I think it's just some dude who just happened to realize that there's some money to be made with Minecraft servers. There's a web hosting recommended company thread here on [H] Hosting Feedback - Where can I get hosting... If it takes them hours to set up a VPS and there's no phone support then they are junk. I'd cancel the order, get your money back, and go with a real host.

I also came across this re: OpenVZ on the Minecraft forums.

You need 1024 mb minimum or it gets really laggy and nasty.

Avoid VPS hosting providers that use OpenVZ to virtualize linux. It cannot handle java programs in RAM very well due to non contiguous memory blocks. If you use a VPS that forces OpenVZ, your java programs will need twice the RAM just to run. You can avoid this by choosing a VPS hosting provider that uses Xen for virtual machines instead.

VPS.net is an excellent example. It is similar to Amazon's EC2 as they employ cloud virtual hosting. They use Xen, and sell nodes at decent prices, allow you to use SWAP (virtual memory using hard drive space) and use solid state disks to make SWAP more viable. They also allocate dedicated CPU speed to your VPS node(s) so other users don't impact your node(s). I use two nodes with 756mb RAM but still can set my minecraft alpha server to 1024mb -xms while hosting another java server, mysql server, apache server, ftp server using Ubuntu 10.10 on only two nodes. My server is nearly lag free, website loads very quickly, and I don't see any overall slow downs what so ever.

I'm not bending over backwards to get a server up.
Well I hear ya there, but then again you are paying a company to do stuff so they may as well do it. ;) Generally speaking when you are renting a VPS then you can do whatever you want on it, it's your machine so if you want to run a Minecraft server on it then that's that.

Now from moderators, plugin developers, and McMyAdmin developers all recommending Provision Host, why wouldn't I look into their services? They ask for 48 hours to setup the server
That's why. ;)
2 days to set up a VPS is insane, as is no phone support. How much is it?

Yeah the OpenVZ vs. Xen argument is everywhere on those forums. The difference between the two is minimal and Xen still costs more regardless.. So I ignored that.

They have skype, MSN, and whatever other communication programs people use these days of course, but I've yet to bother with that since they ask everyone 48 hours for initial setup, and it hasn't been that long.

I'm paying 30 bucks Canadian a month which is bird feed.. I spend more on coffee in two days.. Price is insignificant to me.. For a 24 player limit server on unlimited bandwidth, its cheaper than any other host I've come across on those forums.

None of those hosting companies you mentioned in that Hardforum section have advertised on the official Minecraft forums, and I don't browse every section of Hardforum, mainly the gaming area only.. :p

Also from what I have been reading, MC at the moment is RAM hungry, and nobody recommends running a server with any less than 1024 allocated to java. Which makes the argument vs. Xen less valid.. Performance tests and user testimonials don't show Xen servers running any faster, or smoother than openVZ when java is allocated sufficient ram. With server, client, and mods all in Alpha stages, its pretty hard to prove performance is better when everyone is crashing or experiencing problems with the game, and not the servers... Guess what gets blamed just as often? Yup, the servers.

They are a brand new company, and are physically setting up their hardware as we type.. The 48 hours is not for VPS access, its for them to insure their hardware is configured properly at every location they are expanding too.. Last week before they had to expand their physical locations, servers were being setup in 10 - 30 minutes on average.. The wait is annoying, and I will be compensated, but they are swamped with orders, and are trying to catch up from what I have been told. I'm not too worried yet.

So I went ahead to join the server frenzy and spun up a VM, except I can't connect to it with my Windows Minecraft client. I can connect to it just fine using the Minecraft.net web client (http://www.minecraft.net/play.jsp?server=xxxx&port=25565). I allowed Minecraft through the Windows firewall and I can certainly connect to other Minecraft servers just fine (Hashland, Rawcritics) but I can't connect to my own neither via IP nor via host name when using the client. What the what?

EDIT: Figured it out. Had forgotten to add the UDP rule to the iptables, it had TCP in it which is why the web client worked but the desktop one didn't.

Of course, fraps, just make sure that you keep the window small.

No but i work/live in Manhattan. To order in at my job most meals are about 20 bucks...so with tip and my bottles of water Im about 30 dollars or so.

Quick question for a noob, Ive been playing for a few days and got the basics, but I want to experiment more with tracks and redstone, etc, but I just dont have enough iron and other resources to play around with. Whats the best (non hacking way) game mode that allows basically to learn how everything works? Classic (browser version) at least doesn't allow alot of crafting as far as I could tell. Do I need to setup or join a multi player server?

I am currently in contact with the owner of the company, and he is personally setting up HashLand as I type this.. So I hope to be posting the new address very soon! Stay Tuned Everyone! =) I will post it here, and after, all new information about the server will be posted on the server forums..

Oh I can't wait.. Even though I have been for 48 hours now.. :p
