KI2 (the arcade cabinate) had FPS issues. The animation was really choppy for certain characters (Tusk, Maya, and Orchid especially) as well. KI Gold had it's own unique issues, but it was based on a product with issues to begin with.

To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the popular fighting game, Double Helix has prepared something special. They're streamlining the available versions by introducing the Killer Instinct Anniversary Edition and a free-to-play KI Base Game. However, there's also good news for those who already own the game, as they'll get a free upgrade to the new edition.

If you've got the standard or definitive version, you'll get free Killer Instinct Anniversary Edition upon its launch. It encompasses all 29 Fighters and every Premium Content released previously, such as the VIP Double XP Booster and holiday accessories.


Even if you own some of the Premium Content already, it will still be accessible in this new edition. Additionally, exclusive items like the Permanent VIP Double XP Booster and Gargos’ Golden God and Argent Shroud colors will debut on Steam for the first time as part of this version.

Free Killer Instinct Base Game for all players​

With the release of the Anniversary Edition, a free Killer Instinct Base Game will be available for Xbox consoles (One, Series X|S), Windows PC, and Steam. While more limited than the paid version, it will offer one free weekly rotating fighter and access to single-player, local, and ranked modes.

The "new" KI always was a pretty good game. I'm not sure most fighting game players will end up going back to it (especially with new SF, KOF, and Tekken games out) but this is a good gesture. Looking at my Microsoft Store history for KI, it looks like I have something like 15 DLC packs and pieces of content. That's a lot of wade through, so they desperately needed a single game option. SF4, 5, and the Tekken 7 have the same issue. You can't just buy the whole game, instead you have to buy a version of the game + a bunch of nickel and dime booster packs.
 
cool. although the anniversary thing is new, the free to play part has been available for years...
