Killer Instinct

Pretty cool, although I've already been running the Xbox One version for a while. The old games from the 90's were a steaming pile (as fighting games at least), but this one is the real deal.

Are they going to have cross-play with the Xbox players?

Iron Galaxy did the PC version??...uh oh...another Arkham Knight PC port incoming?

I'm interested in this, I really liked Killer Stink Gold on the N64. Apparently it's this "free to play" thing where you buy each character. I may just buy Saberwulf and no one else.

It's out and if you have a >60Hz monitor it's hilarious. I guess more Universal Windows Platform shenanigans. First thing I did was setup graphics and run the performance test, OK, it ran the game super fast like vsync was disabled, that's great, that's how a performance test would typically be run. Go test out the single player, things seem a bit twitchy while picking my player, get into the match, game loads super fast and it's still running as fast as possible. I check the options, no option to set a frame rate lock to slow it down, the only solution is to set your monitor to 60Hz. A fix is supposedly in the works, but I think it's hilarious that they didn't catch this, do they test these games on the ideal UWP gaming machine?

Anyway, I've only downloaded the free version (it's F2P with only Sabrewulf playable) and it looks pretty good so I'll probably buy it, but I'll wait for the fix before throwing any money at it. Also, graphics look good and it runs good.

Man, I miss the days when I was at least half way competent at fighting games. I can do alright mashing my way through some of the single player stuff. But fucking hell I can't even complete the move tutorial. Forward, down, down-back, light punch...That move is where I can't get past. The hell? I remember being pretty decent back in the SF2 arcade days and even with KI Gold. Now I just feel old and slow.

I was hoping that the game was this fast. That was pretty intense on my 120Hz monitor!

Scored a 2408 in the benchmark for what it's worth. Game is so smooth. ;)

Bah I've been looking forward to this for quite awhile but I can't get this to run whatsoever. It insta closes trying to open, spent all day yesterday trying to troubleshoot it but no luck. Windows store sucks!

Regardless of your display's refresh rate, a fighting game's update loop should always be locked to a set present interval so the input timing is consistent. This just screams amateurish to me. But then again, it is Iron Galaxy, so maybe they were scared that having a locked internal framerate in a game that needs it would get the same reaction as a game that doesn't.

nytegard, I can believe how good you got that running on you Apple IIe!

I cannot get it to install. just keep getting "something happened on our end" error message. one comment in the windows store said to purchase it through the xbox store, so I did but still nothing.
guess ill try again later....

Already have the game on the Xbox One, so have no plans to double dip. Technical issues on the PC aside, it's a pretty good fighting game. Certainly 100x better than the old ones. They clearly borrowed a lot from Street Fighter 4, so that's the closest comparison. In fact, Jago can be played at a pretty decent level just straight-up mimicking Ryu.

Killer Instinct is a cross-buy title, so you should be able to download it on Windows 10 with all your DLC for no extra cost if you use the same Microsoft account.

Huh. I had no idea something like that existed. I'm on it then!

It's part of Microsoft's unified platform strategy. Supposedly all future first-party titles will be released on both Windows 10 and Xbox ONE in this way.

They need to make some SERIOUS changes to their store then. I had to Google how to change the app directory, and even then, you're stuck with one drive for apps, unless you want to delve down into security, add yourself as a user, and then create a symbolic link. I guess they don't want you actually looking at the program directory. It's fine for an Xbox One or Windows Phone/Surface, but the store is anything but friendly to the PC.

20+ GB, and no way to switch installation path? No thanks.

Big fan of the Arcade versions back in the day. Not sure about this one now that its been out for awhile. I was really turned off to the game with the Tusk reveal. He looks nothing like his former self, instead of a Barbarian, he's now a Viking, or the lead singer of Nickleback I can't quite tell.

I'll continue to play the first two on my MAME & Probably pick it up when it hits the dollar bin, if ever.

On a side note. They need to remake Primal Rage :D

You can play it for free with one character (currently Saberwulf). It plays incredibly well and feels right.

What a load of crap that it requires Windows 10. I had planned to buy this game as soon as it was available for PC, but now i'm probably never going to get it because I can't stand Windows 10. I tried to use it for a week and absolutely hated it.

You can change which drive Win 10 apps save to, but you can't do much more than that. For instance, I have a "Games" directory where I keep everything game-related. I can't put anything from the Win 10 store in there, which is a little annoying.
I should have some time to install the game and play around tonight. That install size seems awfully huge for a fighting game.

It's a very very good looking fighting game. It's got quite a few costumes for the characters as well and pretty highly detailed stages. There are currently 22 characters each with 9 costumes. MKX recommends nearly double the space as KI.

I finally got it running on my machine last night. The issue was because I have an N version of windows, as soon as I installed the Media Feature pack it ran perfectly (https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=48231).

I was a big fan of the original and N64 version, KI Gold on the 64 was my favorite fighting game as a kid and this is a nice continuation. The fighting is smooth and a nice pace, although it's lacking in moves right now IMO. I liked how many Ultimates/Ultras each character had on the 64 version, now its just 1 ultra for each character? That's pretty weak. The stages look fantastic, but the character models could of been a lot better. Those minor complaints aside, I'll probably put a lot of time into this.

I cant seem to get this to install at all. I think it might be that I'm running insider preview. when I try to down load from the store it say "something happened on our end. try again"...

I'm kinda disappointed, it doesn't feel like Killer Instinct to me at all. It doesn't help that ALL of the moves and combos for Saberwulf are totally different. The art style is radically different too, might as well not even call it Killer Instinct.

As a fighting game player, I think it's 1000x better than the old KI games. You actually have the ability to open other people up rather than just doing moves and hoping they land. There was very little thought that went into the old engines when it came to setting things up, using normal attacks, and the core elements. It was just all sizzle.
It's a vastly better game, but they skimped a lot on the misc. side stuff like finishers and cinematics. Street Fighter 5 clearly borrowed from that strategy because they did the same thing.

Xbone sticks work but I don't know why you would want to use them. KI was meant to be played on a D-Pad.

Uh.... What? I don't believe xbone sticks work at all for Windows 10 right now.

Have you never played KI in the arcade?

Downloading this now. The Xbox One version is one of the only things I actually own for that system. I'm curious how much better this one is and if my achievements and saves port over.

Killer Instinct was never about normals, it was about stringing together ridiculously long combos. It might be better mechanically, but it's lost everything that made Killer Instinct unique.

If by unique you mean a kind of crappy fighting game, sure. It was fun to see those long combo strings in KI but the games were never well balanced or all that mechanically sound. This one is actually a competent fighter instead of a mashing spectacle. I never found any point in wasting my time getting "good" at the old KI games because there was little purpose to actually learning anything when the entire game was designed around basically smashing your hand on the controller and seeing what happens. That was fun when I was 13 or 14 (I can't remember when I first played KI Gold) but I can't say I ever had the love for that game that I had for SF2 or that I later developed for Tekken 3, MvC2, and Virtua Fighter 3.

Getting "good" at the old KI games really just consisted of memorizing combo sequences...because that's really all there was. The game has no setups for anything. It really only consists of just trying your combo starter moves over and over and hoping the other person doesn't block. If something does land, then it's just about alternating 3 sequences and hoping your opponent guesses the wrong breaker.
If your opponents shells up, you literally have nothing to break them down beyond a single overhead move. For about 2/3 of the cast, that move is slow and can't be followed up. Some are even punishable if they land. Then for a few (TJ Combo in particular), that move is freakishly fast and even starts a combo sequence. Hence, only 2-3 characters were actually valid options.
The old KI games were really single player games that just happened to have a VS aspect. Playing the CPU and rattling off sequences is fun for a lot of people. Never met anyone who cared for the VS aspect...at least anyone who played other people who actually wanted to win.

K, have the new one up and running on my PC. It essentially looks and runs just like the Xbox One version. I even toggled between the two and while a hair better looking, it's not by much. If anything, maybe just a little sharper. Having things on a SSD makes a big difference, though. The long load times are gone.

EDIT: Finally found out that if I set my desktop to 4K mode that the game will allow me to use that resolution as well. It seems to disable vsync, but it does look pretty great at that resolution. Definitely more "next gen" than Street Fighter 5 at the same res, too.

How old are you Domingo?

You cant just say old KI games sucked just because new games are better. At the time ki was in arcades I remember a really nice fun game that a lot of people played in vs mode.

Downloaded the demo (because that's all that it really is). It was fun, but fighting games aren't my thing. Have DOA5 ($19.99 when on sale) and Injustice ($4.99 when on sale) on my Steam Wishlist, so I'll settle for either of those when I get a fighting game itch.

I was in high school/college when the first games were out. They were absolutely popular games, but they weren't designed to be competitive. In those days, people would literally play any fighting game. Kind of like shooters now. SNK had 4 franchises they were cranking games out for on a bi-annual basis. Capcom was making SF updates an annual thing. Even trash games like Primal Rage and Time Killers made money. KI wasn't the worst fighting game, but as a competitive game it was pretty lousy. People tend to remember it with rose colored glasses because of the N64 tie ins. They forget Spinal players walking backwards on the endless bridge until time ran out and someone just sitting in a defensive crouch with no way to hit them.
