Hello all, I don't post here that often, but when I do its something serious. I would like to ask all of the func pad owners out there about the newer pads (i.e. F30's F10's). I know that one is smooth (F10) and one is more textured (F30) but which one would be more game friendly? Right now I have an old fabirc mousepad and a Microsoft IE 3 mouse, but am upgrading to the Logitech G5. I just want some honest oppions from func owers of eather type or the 1030 for that matter on which side they use the most and why. Thanks for your time.

I've had a Func 1030 for almost a year now and I always use the smooth surface. I'm using an MX700 with teflon tape, btw. Great surface, my vote goes for smooth.
 
I have the F10s 11x17 mousepad and it is amazing. I got to try them both out, thanx to my friends at Xoxide.com before I bought one and I clearly liked the smooth surface better. Right now I am using an mx510 with it, but I am eagerly awaiting my new g5 to come in.
 
fUNC 1030 is a great pad, I had mine for almost 1.5 years. I recently purchased the Ice mat rev. 2.0, and that is one hell of a pad. I place this pad just above my fUNC pad. Not to crap on your thread but have you considered going with a different pad? Never the less, the fUNC 1030 is a awesome pad as well. If you do decide to go with the fUNC, you won't be dissapointed.

Word of causion, the fUNC pad will show some wear over time. Mine was starting to show wear just before I retired it.
 
In reply to Mr. James, yes I have considered another pad, but price is kind of an issue and I have seen alot of people around here say good things about the func products. But I supose I could keep my options and my walet a little more open. I just did'nt want to turn this thread into another "Wich mouse pad is better out of company a,b,c" exc.
 
I use the smooth surface on my func 1030 with my Razer Viper. I had used the rougher surface when I had my Boomslang's (went through 3 of them). The smooth surface IMO works much better with optical mice. But, keep it clean, if it gets the slightest amount of dirt (or cookie crumbs, what... i get cravings) on it can scratch the surface or hinder gameplay.

I know and I'm sorry I did that to your thread. The fUNC pad is a great pad, you don't be let down in it's performance.
 
Using fUnc 1030 with smooth side at the office - used a generic optical mouse on that, Logitech MX518, then Razer Diamondback.

Using an Icemat Rev2 (black) at home - used Logitech MX300 on that, Razer Boomslang, Logitech MX518, Razer Diamondback Plasma, Razer Copperhead on that.

You know the difference from moving from a gummy, ol' ball mouse to the G5? It's like that moving from the fUnc 1030 to the Icemat. It's decent for someone on a rock-solid-bottom budget...same as an old 2-button ball mouse. But why spend anything on a higher quality mouse to handicap it with a mediocre pad?

EDIT: And do remember to buy a roll of teflon tape. Any "hard" mousepad will eat through it pretty rapidly, and every couple weeks you'll want to apply a couple more pieces of tape to your mouse bottom. A nice light mouse like a Copperhead on an Icemat with fresh teflon tape on the bottom...feels a lot like an air-hockey puck. It *feels* like it's simply floating on the pad with no friction at all. Very smooth, very accurate. Truly a joy to use!
 
Well now I'm kinda looking at the icemat, but i have a very small space on my desk for a pad and the price is kinda steep. But is there anyone else that would like to give their two cents?
 
I just bought a fUnc 1030 a couple of weeks ago and I am loving it so far. I use the smooth side with my MX1000.
 
buy the icemat. do not think. just buy it.

best mousepad ever.

...unless you have a logitech g5, in which case dont get it because that mouse doesnt work with the icemat. DAMN YOU LOGITECH!

my proof is that my icemat arrived at my house today and when i tried to use it the cursor doesnt fuckin move.

im getting rid of this pos g5 and sticking with my optorite ML-100. its 1600dpi laser is more accurate on the icemat than the g5 was on my bare desk. and it cost half as much.

Yeah, that's one of the many mousepads the G5 is having problems on. You'd better stick to the plastic ones (fUnc). Both the glass and the metal pads the G5 seems to have issues with. And some of the super-smooth plastic pads. And several kinds of desk surfaces.

(LOL - I really dunno why Logitech put that thing out - needed a couple more months in the oven baking, IMHO)

Ender- I just bought a Func F30.R about a month and a half ago...let me just say, wow.

Ive never used a mouse pad before, and this thing is marvelous. I got the big one, the 11 inch x 14 inch or whatever, and it is HUGE, but nice. The surface is perfect. Infact, eventhough its a "rough" surface, its smooth as hell! i cant imagine what the F10R is like...ive even heard people say the F30R is too smooth for them. i think the F30R is just right, smooth, but enough traction to aim when you neeed to.

great mousepad...you wont be disapointed.
 
Well, I own the fUnc 1030 and my dad owns the F-30R. When I first bought the 1030 I used the smooth side (this is over two years ago); however, after flipping it over, I now only use the "rough" side. Why? I actually notice far less drag.

The theory goes that there is actually less surface area for the mouse feet to come in contact with...hence a smoother experience. In fact, it made me turn my sensitivity down the first time I ever tried it. Now that I'm used to it though, I'm pretty accurate :D.

As far as the new pad, I can say that the F-30R is a little more "rough" than the 1030, but still works very well. If I push the mouse hard enough, it will glide all the way across the pad. Either way it still feels like the mouse is gliding on air.

My vote is for the rough version. Good luck. Oh, and make some desk space, the new pad is HUGE!
 
I'd get the 1030 instead of the single sided func pads. It's a more reasonable size, is bascially 2 mouse pads in one (rough, less friction / smooth, more friction) has a nice rubber base, comes with a useful clip for the mouse cord, and is washable.

Don't get an Icemat unless you like the feel of moving your mouse on glass and you don't mind having to use aftermarket teflon tape on your mouse. It's not really a big deal, but you might be like me and hate the way it feels. It's definately a different feel.

I guess I actually like a little feedback when I move the mouse on the pad. That's why I use the smooth side of my func 1030 pad.

I've played with the func 1030 and the Steelpad S&S. To me, I found the S&S to be the best pad on the market now (after having the Fatpad, Icemat, Everglide Giganta, Ratpad and Steelpad 4D). It's too good for words. Very thin, just the right smoothness and it won't slip at all. Just read some of the reviews on it and you shall see the light. (I'm using the MX 518 on it and it comes with skates if you need it)
 
Yeah, it's expensive for a mouse pad, but it's around the same price as an Icemat. If you're looking for something cheeper, the 4D is an excellent choice as well.
 
I use the "rough" side of my 1030. The soft side was good, but it just didnt feel as responsive. Only down side to the orange/blue version is it gets dirty as hell after a few months of use.

Ok on serious note, I agree, you'll try the smooth and than find out the rougher side is faster. BTW I've never any issue with my blue 1030 gettin dirty.

It is washable you know. Just use some dish soap and a rag.

And maybe wash your hands once in a while... :p
 
fUNC 1030 (rough side only) + Gaming Feet from slicksurf.com = heaven.
 
I think I've made my decision, is there any other func owners that want to chime in before I hit the sumbit button on the F30 14" version?
 
I have been using my func 1030 on the smooth side for about a year now and after reading this thread I just flipped it over to the rough side and wow. I didn't know how much the rough side kicked ass. I think im gonna order an F30 for the rough effect when I get a new mouse. Go for the F30.
 
Sorry I don't own a Func mousepad, but I do have a RatPadzGS mousepad and I really enjoy it. Now, I'm not a die-hard FPS'er but more of a graphic design and high-PC-use kind of person so a good mousepad is a must for me. I can;t compare it to much besides the 3M "mousing surface" I was using previously which was terrible, so it was a nice leap for me.
 
I have a fUnc 1030, and its still in great condition over a year later. I always used the smooth side but recently I noticed my mouse wasn't 'gliding' anymore like it used to. I flipped it over and WOW ... I enjoy the textured side much more... either way you get both you just have to flip it to decide :)
 
Well I ordered the F30 14" and I cant wait! Thank you to all who posted and I appreciate it.
 
The really nice thing about the Icemat Rev. 2 is that is feels really solid, probably due to the fact it's glass. :)

I've owned both, the fUNC 1030 and the Icemat. Here are my pro's and cons.

Pros:
Excellent gaming surfice for the $$
Super smooth movements

Cons:
Does show wear
Smaller in size (if that matters to you)

Icemat Rev. 2.0
Pros
Very Solid feeling
Super smooth movements (probably better then the fUNC 1030 IMO)
has yes to show any wear (Buddy has owned one for 1 year and no wear, and he has the older model)
Comes with new mouse pad/feet
Cons
Price
Could break if dropped
1 Sided

Honestly if I had to choose, go back in time when I was buying a gaming pad and only pick between the fUNC and the Icemat and knowing what I know about both; I'd honestly go with the Icemat. For me two sides are not that big of a deal. It's solid feeling and super smooth movements have won me over. Go with the Icemat. I know this thread was started to discuss the differences between the fUNC series, and I am responsible for making it go south, but IMO there are and is a better pad then the fUNC has to offer; and that pad is the Icemat.
 
Which side is your fUnc pad showing wear on? I have had mine for over two years and it works like the first day I received it.
 
I've been using the Func 1030 smooth side with a MX518 for quite a while and I love it. It's sooooo much better than a desk surface or regular mouse pad. I upgraded to a MX518 from an Intellimouse Explorer (the original). There may be better stuff out there, but I haven't tried it or had the money to "dink around".

The smooth side. I'm not saying it doesn't work like the first day I received it, it's just showing some wear. Scratches and some smoothing, due to wear.

Aharrr. 'Tis true, but more fool you for buying G5. Copperhead + Icemat = pure p0neage. Sorry, but it has to be said. Much as i'd love to help you decide which fUNC, it'd be criminal to let you not buy an icemat
