DVD Decoder

So... I just bought this whole new pc. I've got an NEC 3520A in it as my DVD player. I've got my Klipsch speakers set up and my entire pc burnt in. Now that I've got everything ready to go, I stick in LOTR to test the DVD playing ability of the system and test the awesomeness of these speakers. Up comes the installation screen for InterActual, and I install it (I'd rather not, but most DVD use it, so I thought what the heck). I get the opening menu, select play, and sit back to enjoy several hours of uncut extended goodness.

But what's this? "Video subsystem" error? I check with InterActual's support, only to find that I don't have a DVD encoder. I payed $65 for a DVD+/-RW, and I can't watch DVDs? What the f***?

I'm royally pissed at the moment. If anyone knows of any good DVD decoders, preferablly FREE, I would be most grateful.

PS I checked the NEC site, I can't find anything at all (decoder, drivers, firmware) for the 3520A.

I try to buy optical drives that come with PowerDVD and/or Nero software. I love both. I've never looked into free decoders though. Google? Also try looking on review sites, and even PC Magazine, for the top-rated software.

Ask and you shall receive.....

I've probably used half of the players on the list. Stay away from BSPlayer and AVIpreview, unless the new versions are drastically better I was unimpressed with them. I haven't tried VLC yet but it got good reviews.

You're not alone in playing your first dvd with a new system. A lot of people don't know that Windows doesn't come with a dvd decoder and oem drives don't provide any software.

Which player do you recommend?

I personally love VLC (use it on all my computers, whether Windows or Linux). On Windows it does everything its supposed to and nothing else. It runs well, fast, and without massive amounts of overhang (ala WMP). You should try it out and see if you like it.

I remeber running into that problem too. I looked up powerdvd on ebay, pretty cheap. Never did find a free one though. Nvidia has one out, dunno how much it is.

I like power dvd, works well as I watch a lot of movies on my comp.

Just got my burner about two weeks ago. It was retail w/ software, and no DVD player software. Not cool.

I haven't used VLC as ^^^ mentioned. But I got Media Player Classic (as mentioned on doom9 and it's awesome. It'll play pretty much anything you want (except DRM) without a problem. And the whole thing weighs in at under 1.3MB.

Not good enough yet? Whip out a copy of realalternative and quicktimealternative. Use FFDShow to customize the picture.

Seriously, without paying for the TheaterTek codecs, I don't know how you can get much better or easier.

Want basic?

In Win2k, dvdplay.exe which is in C: winnt\system32. I'm pretty sure that WinXP has the same.

Oh, and it is free.

Yeah, XP has that program but it'll call WMP, and WMP isn't the best (IMHO) out there at playing DVD's, especially with other superior, and free, players on the market.

The problem that I have with WMP is it is far too much of a resource hog and I can see the frames skip and drop. I don't see that with MPC. I also think that MPC's default codec is much better than whatever WMP is using.
