For those who have only negative things to say about this game, you never liked doom in the first place. DOOM3 IS doom..it's a perfect, huge scope of doom in beautiful 3d that runs like silk at 1600x1200. You can't help but see shades of the old 2d/3d art in the art throughout the game, it's a masterpiece. The soundscape only compliments what graphically is the most astounding and amazing experience I've ever had with a video game.

It's dark...it's scary...and it's doom. Don't bash it because there aren't the innovations, plot blah blah....it's doom man! They wanted to recreate the original and did a great job. I still can't believe how fast everything is, and the action can really heat up.

Doom has a flavor of it's own. You either like it or don't...but if you don't like DOOM3, you didn't like the original either...because the flavor is the same. I can't help but want to play this again and again, just to be in this dark and perfectly rendered world. There is nothing else like it.

After playing through the first 4 maps I trend to agree. I got my main problem solved by upping the gamma a little and I'm having a ball and getting scared shitless...Those big fatboy monsters are fantastic.

IT ROCKS BABY !!

pretty broad generalization there. i loved doom when it came out. it was an amazing game then. it was just great. now its the same game as you said below..with better graphics. the rest of the game hasn't grown like i expected.

It's dark...it's scary...and it's doom. Don't bash it because there aren't the innovations, plot blah blah....it's doom man! They wanted to recreate the original and did a great job. I still can't believe how fast everything is, and the action can really heat up.
I think its great that they wanted to recreate it, but i think they could have made a more interactive gameplay.you know, advancements- in something besides graphics.

Doom has a flavor of it's own. You either like it or don't...but if you don't like DOOM3, you didn't like the original either...because the flavor is the same. I can't help but want to play this again and again, just to be in this dark and perfectly rendered world. There is nothing else like it.

quite to the contrary there are tons of things like doom. none are doom. doom spawned a crazy amount of rip offs and wanna bes. just because the new game doesn't live up to the expectations of someone doen't mean they didn't like the original. think of a better argument.
i'm not saying the game isn't a great scare you shitless game, i'm just saying that your argument really just sucks. there are tons of reasons that people could believe the game could have more stuffing to it.

I agree Doom3 is Doom . I got exactly what I expected and more . Some folk were I guess expecting a sequel to Farcry or HL , tough titties.

Hey guys, we need more doom3 threads! Someone get on it STAT!

You either like it or you don't whoopedy do people have opinions. You sound like you're trying to convince yourself.

This is Doom, I played the first one like 15 years ago, and the terror hasn't changed, only the graphics have. Ive always had a place for Doom in my alltime favorites. I was mildly surprised because I thought it would be a good game, but I can say now it"s much better than I thought it would be.

I loved Doom. Doom 3 is merely OK. I went in expecting to dislike because I haven't enjoyed an id game since Doom. In the end, I like Doom 3. It isn't really scary, but does have enough moments to make it playable.

Soon as my GT comes in I'll play though with all the eye candy on. which is just about all it has going for it. After completing it, I quickly learned it has the replay value of a brick.

Im a simple gamer.. I need constant action and events to keep my attention. That is why I cant play many RPG games, they cant hold my attention. Doom 3, for me, went far above my expectations and I would have gladly paid an upwards of 100$ for it.

my 2 cents.

Omg Shoot Zombies Over And Over I Have Never Seen This Before

Awesome game, hands down. Next gen graphics kick ass. Besides, it's Doom!!!! The original Doom was the first PC game I ever played, and I got hooked. I have been a fan ever since. Kudos to ID for a great game.

hmmm...interesting point. Actually i was inspired to write this thread after playing it and just enjoying the atmosphere so much. I've seen alot of people raggin on the game....and yes, i wish there was more physics and more intereactivity is always welcome...but it seems to me they really just wanted to recreate doom and doom didn't have that either. It's such a great remake, i mean, it's like DOOM come to life. I guess my point is, if you didn't want to play doom again why did you buy the game? They said it was a remake with more substance about the why and where of the scenario's...no one said it wouldn't be 'find key to open door'. That was doom. It's the same thing, so what? that's fine with me. I like the raw simplicity and obviously alot of other people do too.

Regardless, I'm not trying to convince people of anything; that's ludicrous. I just love to be in that dark and twisted atmosphere. And to that other poser, i mean poster...That's what I meant when i said, 'There is nothing like it'.

And if you think there is an atmosphere that hits as perfectly as DOOM in a game, i don't know about it. Please fill me in.

Actually, I don't like the SP all that much. But MP is awesome!

play thru it on nightmare. i unlocked that via code and am playing thru it on that right off. no vetran, or whatever is below that. let me tell you, THIS is the way doom3 should be played. its hard as shit and far from boring that way. nightmare = how men play doom3

I have to say this is the most frightening experience I have had in a video game ever! The only other recollection of a game that frightened me (not to this level of course), although I didn't play much of the other Doom series, was Descent II with frightening machines whose noise was terrifying. This (Doom III) is an extreme exageration of that, you think your safe until you hear a noise, problem is you dont know where that noise is coming from. It's frightening and I've barely played the game and hour or two. Congrats to John Carmack and all the iD staff that worked on this game. This game is worth the buy!

Yeah Doom 3 is Doom plain and simple. But it gets boring and there is nothing new.

Back when the original came out there was nothing like it. Doom was the first fps many of us played in our lives. Then Doom II came out soon afterward and it was like omg...wow.
We are here 10 years later now and the only thing thats changed is the graphics and sound. But hey wasn't that a given. It's expected. Sheit...we've had numerous rehash shooters in that time and then half life kind of reinvented the wheel far as storyline, interactivity, puzzle solving in an fps.'

Some specific gripes:
The PDA is a crappy attempt...who wants to sit and listen to all those messages, most people just sift for the codes for the lockers, otherwise the pda is crap. I stopped using my pda real a year ago...it was a waste of time. Having a pda actually made me forget things. I wouldn't bet on pdas being around in the future...

Oh and the crane game to clear the gases from the room, how janky is that. They might as well have added a coin slot and a side mission to look for quarters lying around, (come on) be a little more creative.

As far as MP is concerned, I remember playing Quake II MP and wearing that ish out 6 years ago.

Ooooo  look at all the eye candy! Thats about all its worth.

I know I'm selling my copy as soon as I beat SP. I sure won't be playing through again or be playing the tired old MP.

How the hell did HL reinvent the wheel? What the hell did it do that hadn't been done before sans graphics.

storyline, interactivity, puzzle solving in an fps...

more than just looking for keys....wow red, blue, and yellow keys: so pretty

Everyone spouts stroyline as if HL actually had one. It was doom with some pre-scripted scenes. Big fucking deal, play some RPGs people, then 3 lines of dialouge might not impress you as much. Interactivity...ya ok great...I still prefer being scared shitless over flushing a damned toilet. Puzzle Solving....hm....short of setting that scorpian-like thing on fire there wasn't too much it. HL was fun, but it wasn't the second coming of christ.

Yeah I agree it was a fairly fun game, although I got bored by the time I reached Xen and never finished it. It really wasn't anything groundbreaking in my opinion either, pretty much the same formula every FPS has, then had a few little changes, nothing big enough to make it that spectacular though. After playing several different games up to that point, it really wasn't that much out of the ordinary. That is just my opinion though, I still got fairly involved in it for the week I played it, but not really any more involved than I have any other game. It was still fun, as I'm sure Half-Life 2 will be fairly fun since it will have different elements than Doom 3 to mix it up a bit, but I wouldn't really consider it being everything it is hyped to be. I still think S.T.A.L.K.E.R. will have a better overall fun factor than Doom 3 and Half-Life 2.

Anyway, I've only played Doom 3 for about an hour and a half so far just started getting past the beginning exploration and now the enemies are arising. Even though since my Ti4200 has to run considerably slower than stock speeds since it is on the verge of death, and the IQ is messed up a little due to that, I must say even running 640x480 medium quality it still looks awesome and I can't wait until I get my new system in a few months to play it how it was really meant to be played. I am actually loving the atmosphere so far, I guess my opinon could change but I feel pretty optimistic, it has that old id feeling to it and I like it. Hell I even started playing the original quake from a cd i bought a long time ago when it first came out, and it is still good, maybe it is just me but I'm not afraid to say I like their style of games.

To quote myself I did say "storyline, interactivity, puzzle solving IN AN FPS"

Just in case you didn't get that since you obviosly just skim:

"in an fps"

So don't spout off like that...btw I have played many RPGs as they are my favorite genre of game. I am not just a fps shooter fanboy as you so claimed to have typed me. Seriously man...read before you jump to conclusions.

I don't understand all this direct comparison to the original Doom. Although I grew up in that era, I am sure that many gamers playing D3 have never experienced the original, so it is unfair to imply that those people didn't like the original.

The original was not nearly as pitch black as D3, which is certainly one of the most debated topics of the current iteration.

while yer at it might wanna sell yer pc along with it. doesnt sound like any game will ever excite you.

some people are 3d junkies, some people are gamers. you sound more like the former than the latter. gamers could give a shit about features, we just wanna have fun. i for one had a blast.

btw, next time you buy an overhyped game, dont play it on easy (i know hes gonna say he didnt but anyone that uses the words boring and doom3 didnt play it on nightmare end of story)

i like the game overall, just have a few gripes. what amazes me is the sheer fanboi-ism. if you dont absolutely love Doom3 the way it is (it is perfect after all) you suck.

the people who love it, result to insults and personal attacks to those who don't agree, while the people who don't worship the ground carmack shits on... just post their opinions....hrmmm....correlation there maybe?

I know it doesn't come up all too often, but I don't understand how people can complain about atmosphere or interactivity. I've just been completely at awe with the detail they put into the atmosphere. If you pay attention, you can understand how they are able to sustain life on Mars. It's very cool sci-fi stuff.

As far as interactivity, this is one of the more interactive games I've seen. Computers sitting on desks aren't just little pieces of flair anymore, you have to watch out for ones that let you open doors, or shut off valves. It's no longer about big bright switches sitting along on a wall. And the PDA makes the game very interactive. Although I do not enjoy checking email in real life, the game does a decent job of making the chore bearable. You almost always are rewarded for doing it (weapon lockers) and the emails are short and to the point.

The only thing I can complain about in this game is the flashlight/weapon switch. While I can see why they did it, at this point in the game (Enpro) I am getting a little tired of it. Although the game has brightened up significantly here.

oh i disagree. The PDA feature of being able to listen to the audio recordings while you look around or continue forward reminds me totally of EVIL DEAD where the tape is playing while the evil shit is approaching. I love the mood that gives. Really great atmosphere that creates.

I also agree about playing it on hard, it's way to easy on marine. I plan on finishing it on marine then going back and I guarentee you i'll play the whole thing again and enjoy it even more cause now I'm not spending as much time tweaking stuff and trying different settings out and just enjoying the game for a hard challenge.

Regarding the darkness. Taht's a unique obstacle in a game that has never been done like this, I think it's really cool you can't just hike the gamma up and see. The darkness is pretty frickin' cool, and it's designed to be overcome as part of the gameplay.

btw, I've manually set my gamma to 1.3 (seta r_gamma 1.3). I suggest trying that out.

I'm so glad I'm not the only one who thought of Evil Dead.

No, don't beat SP. If you're going to bitch and moan about it, sell your damn copy now.

Everything must be Di Vincci or its crap. I guess I just dont understand that mantality. I look to enjoy every game that I buy. I am looking to be entertained, not blown away. If a game does go over the top and ends up being a masterpiece, then all the better. Sometimes I run into games that are bad to the point of unplayable, but that happens. I haven't bought Doom3 yet but I am sure I will enjoy it.

This person hit the nail on the head. The whole thread started from a fanboi on a crusade to convince the people that wanted more interesting game play that they were wrong. In itself, that's pretty stupid. People that were hoping for more have a valid complaint and screaming "but this is doom" until you're blue in the face isn't going to change that. The reason the complaint is valid is because it's their opinion, and they're entitled to it.

Amazing that so many gamers apparently fail to grasp the concept of 'what d3 is about', yet manage to grasp the concept of most every other game, including ones with more complex themes. I've not observed a game take this kind of debate in quite some time, if ever.

It is quite obvious that many people expected more from this game, not so much because of the type of game it is, but rather because where it came from.

I might add that the creators of d3 never made any comments along the lines of 'd3 is just a basic scary remake of the original doom, expect the same old gameplay with whizz-bang graphics, it's really just a showcase demo of our new engine. If you didn't like the original, you won't like this. But look forward to all the really cool games based on the engine to follow'.

Had that been the case I don't think we'd be here now.

people who don't grasp this game are the ones who never played or played very little of the orginal doom and doom2
these people are probaly no older than 13 to 18
and yes even some 18 year olds don't know about the orginal doom...IMO...people expected more cause of people like us. the ONES who played DOOM and DOOM2. we knew what we where getting into we knew what this game was about. we new CARMACK is a god. the vets know this game KICKS ASS and it's prefect. the n00bs know almost nothing and do not understand. i guess you could say lack of experience.. oh well doom3 kicks ass. and you teenagers have no idea what a REAL game is...

How about we all just say what's on our minds. The graphics are pretty, the game blows.

The people standing up for it are either A) Fanboys or B) people pissed off because they spent $600 on a graphic card and another $700 on other useless garbage to play a game that sucks major ass.

There, I said it.

Respectfully disagree. Been gaming since hand drawing maps to Adventure! and Zork. Played the original Doom.

No one can say what 'real games' are, entertainment is a very perosnalized topic and everybody has thier own perception of what a 'real' game is.

Nonetheless, I did expect more from d3 myself. Not a bad game by any means, but not really what I expected either.
