I just loaded up Doom 3 in Vista and can't stand it. My machine runs it fine, but I guess I'm spoiled from Bioshock to be honest. I kept looking around hoping to be able to press "E" and pick things up. Doom 3 does look pretty good. But I don't like the cramped levels like that. Anyone else??

Doom 3 along with Quake 4 were both some of the biggest flops and disappointments in a long time on the PC end of things.

Doom 3 was nothing more than a lame amusement park ride on rails. It substituted poorly lit areas for real atmosphere, and gimmicky ambushes from behind in place of actual compelling combat and AI.

Quake 4 basically strapped a flashlight to your gun, turned on some lights, and called it a new game. The strogg-ification was poorly executed, and the multiplayer was trash at release, and is still a somewhat kludgy add-on. In current form, it's multiplayer is passable, but at this point, it's too late for it to gain any ground. The only thing keeping it alive is progaming circuits who need to have a current generation engine running to help their sponsors sell graphics cards and other hardware.

id Software let us down big time with all of the id Tech 4 engine games. Doom 3 = poorly lit crapfest. Quake 4 = brighter, but equally as crappy with extremely disappointing multiplayer. And now, Quake Wars: Enemey Territory ... which from most accounts is just a poor rendition of the Battlefield formula with major balance issues and a lack of fun factor.

I am hoping Quake0 (QuakeZero), which will be based on Quake 3 Arena, and the next Quake Arena game based on id Tech 5 aren't buckets of piss, but id hasn't done anything to floor gamers in a decade.

I don't think Tech 5 will be powering Quake Zero. I thought it was a browser version of Quake 3 that will be free...

That's pretty harsh, but unfortunately true.

I just played it for a few minutes and it made me sick to be honest. I guess I'll just go back to Bioshock. I can't believe that people actually liked Doom 3 when it came out. I remember alot of people on this forum saying that they liked it. I actually may just uninstall it. I was bored the whole time I was playing it, and you were right...the potential is there definitely...but I can't stand how it is done.

Starting flame wars eh? Doom 3 was great when it came out. It is and never was supposed to be a RPG/FPS as in BS, SS2, DeusEx...

stop already, the horse is dead.

You quoted me .. read the quote .. I say "Quake0 (QuakeZero), which will be based on Quake 3 Arena, and the next Quake Arena game based on id Tech 5".

Quake Zero indeed will be Quake 3 based, with some enhanced shaders and tweaks, along with a robust web interface and ranking system to go along with it. It's being marketed as a testbed for new ideas and technology for the upcoming "next Quake Arena" (next after Quake0) which has been stated to be in development using id Tech 5 to power it.

3 years later and scrubs on the internet still feel the need to bash it. If you ask me, that's more a testament to how good the game is actually was.

I honestly wasn't trying to start a flame war of any sort. I just happened to install it this morning and wanted to share my experience with it.

I couldn't get into Doom 3 much at all. For the few minutes that I played it (alright, I admit, I got spooked by the sound effects), there wasn't anything really there as a game. Just darkness, monsters run at you, rinse, repeat.

While the game did look good, even on my old machine, I think that id realized that they're better off making tech demos and selling them as games then they are at making the games themselves. That's what this round seemed to be (to me): "Hey, look at how good our tech us! Pay us lots of money and you can license it too!"

I played it the first four days it was out and haven't touched it since even though it is still on my PC. I can't get back into it. I played co-op on the xbox and that was the only way I beat it. Probably just because it was more fun with two people.

Or........... a testament to how much people WANTED the game to be good, and were let down. That's why I felt it necessary to post in this thread. It had relevance to me, so I posted.

I was one of the kids on the forums hiting refresh every day waiting for the next screenshot to come out. I was downloading half broken leaks running on id Tech 3 just to get a glimpse at some of the gameplay. I was pre-ordering and buying into the hype machine 100%. I was watching every bit of video on the development. Every morsel, I was lapping up like a starved dog.

Then the day finally came. Wal-mart purchase at midnight? CHECK!

I dashed home in a frenzy and I installed. "Why couldn't this go any faster?", I thought to myself. Finally, after all this waiting and anticipation, I began to play through it. I had my case of Mountain Dew, my bags of Doritos, and cold dark room glowing only with the light from my monitor. I had my Slanket (Sleeved Blanket for those uninformed), my updated hardware, and my fond memories of all the past games. I was READY to be blown away. I was READY to be the first one to type up a forum post saying HAH! I TOLD YOU THIS GAME WOULD OWN.

I stepped foot onto Mars again. The red planet which I remembered so well .. and I was scared a few times pretty good. But then .. something happened. The monster closet became predictable (perhaps 6 monster closets and the novelty wore off). After about an hour of gameplay, I started constantly walking backwards because I knew there was a larger threat from behind than infront.

That's when it happened for me. I had let the games' genie out of the bottle. (No not Game Genie .. altho what a fantastic peripheral it was .. I digress.) The game wasn't going to bring back the same sense of feeling its predecessors once did. It was a mediocre First Person Shooter. It had the branding and hints of the story I left behind, but it was changed. It was different. It was .. average.

From there, I played through the game a handful more times .. trying to eek out my $50 worth. Trying to justify the near $1000 in upgrades I had plunked down to play this game at high quality settings.

Since that time, I have readjusted my expectations. Which is why I had a better experience with Quake 4. It was a better game in my opinion, but lacked a lot of what Quake 2 had going for it. id has been putting out better and better products and I think they're on an upswing. ET:QW could end up being much better than the Beta 2 everyone had opinions about. It certainly is a better package than Doom 3 offered up.

At any rate, please don't call be a scrub because I felt the need to post an opinion on internet forums. I have my opinion, and when someone starts a thread asking for it, you're damn right I will feel the need to give it. Sad that your's is just a lame personal attack.

That my friend, is a statment of TIME.

I remember playing one of Kings Quests games back on a 486 Compaq computer, 5 1/4 floppy disk. At the TIME, that game was great!!! Fun too. But to look back on it compared to TODAYS games....well, there really is no comparison.

When Doom (original) came out, it was the end all be all of gaming. EVERYONE played it, or so it seemed and if you didnt play it, people looked at you funny. Look back to it now and the graphics are laughable, to say the least.

Doom 3 came out.....Guess what....EVERYONE like it. It was the "end all be all of gaming"......at the TIME.

Then came Oblivion.....ahhhh, another mad rush to "end all be all of all games".

And now, the new kid on the block is BioShock.

Give it a year and people will be saying EXACTLY what you just said, but will be saying it about BioShock. Mark my word, it WILL happen.

Doom was good for the time. It is several years old now, though. Gamers' expectations have changed, but Doom 3, being an old game, has not. I played it through a couple of times when it was first released, and when RoE came out, I did it again.

I agree. It was fun when it came out, and the graphics where gorgeous. Times change. The game is old, and this argument is getting there too.

You are incorrect.

It certainly left a lot to be desired.

I think my problem was mostly that I was spoiled by the deeper and more dynamic games I'd been playing like Call of Duty and Far Cry. Doom 3 was good for a bunch of cheap thrills near the beginning and then it began to drag.

It had some old school feel to it, but I think I just like games to feel different nowadays. Doom 3 lacked that rhythm that games with more interesting character movements and more dynamic gameplay provided.

But I still had fun playing it even if it was largely because it looked great and it was one of the first few big time DX9 games.

I might be alone here but I think it looked bad even when it first came out.

i hated it

I thought Doom3 was dripping with atmosphere. It was one of the highlights mentioned in most reviews at the time. The audio logs were well done. The ambushes did become gimmicky.

Have you played through all of Quake 4 ? The graphics have a superficial resemblance due to using the same engine, but the game itself plays out quite differently than Doom3. It was anything but the same game again. I like Q4 MP but it died a very early death.

I was READY to be blown away. I was READY to be the first one to type up a forum post saying HAH! I TOLD YOU THIS GAME WOULD OWN.

I think you overhyped yourself. To me, id delivered on what was promised. Nothing like the stuff Bethesda pulled in overhyping Oblivion. (radiant AI my ass)

And now, Quake Wars: Enemey Territory ... which from most accounts is just a poor rendition of the Battlefield formula with major balance issues and a lack of fun factor.

I'm sorry but calling QW a poor rendition of the BF formula is a joke. It reflects poorly on your sense of MP FPS history. I'm beginning to think the majority of people comparing it to BF have never played RTCW MP or Wolf ET.

I might be alone here but I think it looked bad even when it first came out.

Bad period or just the human character models ? Its graphics were pretty much state of the art, especially the lighting. The gameplay was straight forward but well executed. I thought RoE was better in that respect.

The game is old, and this argument is getting there too.
It's amazing some people are just now playing D3 for the first time.

I can agree with all the monster closet / poor AI opinions, and I know it was a shallow game, but damn I loved it. I guess I just love id's dark / art style.

ID never makes a game with any substance.

If you played 1 ID game you played them all. It's just updated graphics with much of the same.

Unfortunately this is true, I really wish they could pull one out of their hat. I am a little curious about their new game, but after listening to john talk about the freakin engine in all the videos, we will probably get another repeat.

/me checks... yes I did say Doom3 was a tech-demo for the doom3 engine

iD get their money mainly from licencing their engine, just like Epic get theirs from licencing their Unreal engine

sure some games come out of it from their in-house dev's BUT they are move concerned with where their real income comes from and that is from licencing

Doom 3 was a good game and still is- especially the expansion pack. Quake 4 was pretty good too. 10 bucks for Quake 4 was well worth it.

I still like doom3, the graphics even today are quite impressive since the game came out when like i had a geforce4 and im still amazed by its graphics today.

Saw this thread this morning... and I decided to load it up and play again...

Three hours later... yeah, I still like Doom3... it is what it is.. an entertaining and good looking game.. doesn't have the greatest story line of all time, the graphics are a bit old, and the "monster closets" are predictable..

Not the best game ever written, but still fun, in my opinion.....

Doom 1 & 2 were just bang bang shoot-em-up titles, and that is why they were great. Doom 3 was the same, and I was just as pleased. On Ultra quality with AA all the way up, it still looks pretty incredible. I love it for the simplicity and following in the footsteps of the same style play as Doom 1 & 2. The only thing I wish was if they would have kept the same Q3 style movements and physics.

If you were disapointed by Doom3 I suspect you don't fully understand what the game was about and who it catered for, either you assumed what the game would be like or you were mislead somehow.

I thought for what Doom3 set out to do, it did rather well. Same as the movie for a matter of fact, anyone who was expecting anything other than what they got just aren't on the right page.

guys, it's a remake of DOOM!

what was DOOM? monsters come at you, you get to blast them,
so
DOOM3, looks incredible, atmosphere and sounds and overall creepiness is incredible, AND monsters come at you, you get to blast them, just like DOOM and you're complaining?

What do you think it's going to be, some compelling, moving experience?
I mean it's DOOM dude!

So, if you want something different go dig out Oregon Trail, sheesh
