My concern is with the 5090 and 5080 FE design, it is dumping heat right into the CPU air coolers intake path.I haven't gone after an FE card in a minute, but with EVGA out of the game that's the best option IMO.

Most cards are not mostly pass through like the new FE design. Most AIB cards are blowing into the card with some of the end being pass through.That's how most cards have worked for many years.

With FE all that heat is being directed into the path of the CPU cooler since there are cutouts in the PCB for the air to flow through. This is in comparison to a AIB type design where the they usually have several fans with the end portion cooler usually being the "pass through".

Despite it being thinner it looks like the heatsink has more surface area than the 4090 FE at a glimpse going by the number of fins. It also has a massive vapor chamber system with 10 heat pipes. I think it may cool better than the 2.8-slot design of the 4090.Finally jumping on board with the 5000 series news.
Looking at the 5090, I'm surprised about how small it is and how it will keep up with the heat. Are we expected to believe that the 2 slot design will cool better than the 4090 3 slot with their technological advancements?
If I pick up the 5090 FE, I would open up my closed loop and let the 5090 perform on air cooling alone, but I feel the flagship FE will require some water cooling to keep throttling to a minimum with that 2 slot design.

The more I look at videos of founders edition, the more it seems like the card is still MASSIVE. It just isn't three slot, but the card itself is huge. I don't anticipate it will be hard to keep cool.

I don't even consider using a credit card and carrying that balance over a few months to be having finances in order. Unless you pay your credit cards before the interest kicks in, you are simply throwing away moneyWell this was supposed to be the enthusiast thread for people who have their finances in order or at least a credit card that isn't maxed out but apparently that was too much to ask.![]()
The question is whether the aftermarket cards and their overclocks add anything to the base framerates/raster discussion. Since base framerates in some titles are so borderline, a good OC could really help a lot. Even 3-4 frames is significant when you are under 60FPS. I always go founders but if I had the physical space in my case, I'd consider aftermarket this time.
I haven't looked into the possible ordeal of a waterblock for the new 5090 layout. For decade I've been able to slap on waterblocks with my eyes closed. Granted, it was always non-conductive thermal paste. You are now telling me they are using liquid metal? That might break me away from using a waterblock this round, atleast for the FE. I've strictly used EVGA (and would be still if they didn't belly up) before getting my 4090 FE. Going with ASUS, MSI, or another never seemed appealing. At this point, it might be necessary if I even consider a waterblock. Decisions,But I thought tearing down the 5090 founders for waterblocking it is now like a nightmare. First of all they are using liquid metal in there which is conductive--I would never tear down a 5090 founders. If you want to put a block on a 5090 I think you need to go aftermarket this time, right?
You can clean the LM off. Anyone who has done a fair bit of delidding CPUs knows it's doable it's just much more annoying to work with and you need to be extra careful not to get it on any other components. The fact that they are using it tells you they need to get every bit of cooling they can out of this design though.Yes, they are using liquid metal. I really have no idea which is the best version for a block. Probably the simplest solution would be to buy one of the pre-blocked cards from someone like Gigabyte.Well I'm sure someone will do it, but I think the point is founders edition is perhaps not the best version for a block anymore?

If I was on 4090 I'd wait for a refreshed ti card at least for sure. The raw performance just isn't there.
Well, for me it makes sense coming from 3090. Not sure it makes sense for anyone else. Even coming from 3090, I am underwhelmed at this point.
Now do it with the super cards, 4080 super to 4080 is like a 6 to 7 percent increase in raster.
