When you mean you copied the ISO file to the USB drive, do you mean you just literally copy and paste the ISO file to the USB drive?
If you did then it's not going to work... you need to use some tool to make a bootable USB drive from your ISO file.

not sure about vista since i havent used it, but with windows 2000 and xp, u should be able to plug it in and use it, with fat32 file system which is the most likely used file system on win 98
you can even do it now, even if bootcamp is still in beta, my macbook pro runs windows with no problems, except some ppl say the battery life sux when running windows comparing to mac os x which should improve in the future, otherwise it just behaves like a normal pc laptop.
