This is a weird one... ive been using the same 4.1 system since maybe 2002? Its a logitech z560 system and its sadly seeminly dying after 20 plus years....

So i picked this up to replace it. Is it weird to feel sadness for the old set after all thee years? The games, music, and movies over the decades that got spewed out in pretty good audio glory.

Hell, i was in college, on a athlon thunderbird 1ghz or a dual athlon mp 1400 when i probably got these things.

I remember blown up my first set playing b17 flying fortress and having to get a second via warranty.

Replacing your 25 year old system with a new 15 year old system 🤣

I still use mine actually. I have it connected to my old PC for my kid to use and I use 2 of the spakers connected to my receiver.

Not at all. I still have my Klipsch Pro Media 5.1s from 20 years ago (with a dead sub)boxed up in the basement. Every couple of years I hook the speakers up to my receiver and sub and listen to them for old times sake.

I have zero sentiments so yeah this is weird af. I also swap gear like I swap my underwear.

lol, I finally went through the task of setting these up.....

it is a pretty good upgrade vs what I had. I can hear things I never really heard before in games and music. A lot clearing in quality across the range I guess or just the other set was 20 years old and not so happy anymore. Strange having a center speaker now in games. I almost had to relearn what was going on in Hell Divers 2 because things were different a bit and I can more clearly hear what was going on around me more so that before. I feel I need to try Tarkov again because I always hated that I couldn't really tell what was going on and that the surround sound in it was awful.

only thing I don't like is the volume /control pod is wider than the older set and sit funny on top of my KVM.

that takes me back. i was in college in 2002 as well. i had an athlon XP 1600+ system. i think i had the z540 speakers? they were very similar just cheaper. I still miss some of that old stuff.

I still have my Z-5500 set, although it is now sitting in the basement collecting dust.
I'm still using mine to this day!

I think that is about the time I got the original set as well. Rocking the dual Athlon MP 1600+....

The first set of Z560s I actually blew up playing the B-17 flying fortress sim....I cranked the speakers and did the external plane view, and....it couldn't handle a whole flight of 4 engine bombers and went BANG and smoke started coming out of the sub....Logitech replaced it under warranty though which was good.

I also kind of miss the old days a bit...that dual CPU dream back then was glorious to have....the screaming of dual delta fans is probably why I have tenitis in the ears (not really)

Right there with you;

I rocked the Z560's for 20+ years. 4.1 would simulate a center channel pretty well, great bass, clean highs (for the money). I remember playing mmo's, peeps would sneak up on me invised, I could hear them perfectly, turn around at the last second and smash their ass. Accused of cheating many times. Fantastic in the battlefield games, bombs going off, walls shaking, radio traffic. Good Times! As far as bang for buck and longevity, best PC speakers I ever owned.

As time went by sound became shittier and shittier in windows, coupled with games abandoning creative sound profiles, the z560's started losing appeal. That and the electronics/rheostats started to get very noisy along with a steady hum from the amp/sub, it was time to move on.

Delta fans were cool but the gashes on my fingers were not. 😭

I understand that feeling of losing old trusty hardware.

I used a Razer MAKO for over a decade.
Even did capacitor repairs on it until it stopped working completely.

For what it was, the audio was acceptable to me as I only gamed on my PC.
Streaming services weren't big and I had a separate system for music/video.

Yes, there were better speakers than the Mako, but my setup was already optimized for those speakers and sub and I would have kept repairing that set until it caught on fire from duct tape and glue.
Using them for the first time was similar to when I ditched the cheap all-in-one music systems for a dedicated CD transport, a mid-end receiver, and a pair of passive NHT 1.5s.

I loved the design because it was unique. Similar to how I still have a pair of NHT 1.5s (and always on the lookout for a decent-shape pair of 2.5s). Unique design.
I've recently moved to using a mini-shelf system with the NHT 1.5s and contemplating adding a bass again (when the Mako died, I moved to a 2 speaker system as I didn't like any of the sub footprint designs).
I can't do more than 2.1 as I would dislike all the wiring around my room.
