A pricing error like this is bad enough without following it up with a massive reply-all e-mail error. On a related note, I think there might be an opening in this guy's department tomorrow. :D

Last night, Cabela's sent out an e-mail to the hundreds of customers who had tried to buy a the G-Floor Floor Protector in green (normally $209.99) for the ridiculously low price of $4.88, letting them know this was a mistake and their accounts would not be charged. The bigger problem is that the person at Cabela's who sent out the e-mail forgot to Bcc the customers, thus giving out every other customer's address.

Meh, of all the BCC errors Ive heard of this one is pretty minor. I doubt people will be too embarrased by buying a garage mat.

I don't see where this is that big a deal, although I am sure some people will get their panties in a bunch over it.
 
Its illegal plus it ruins marketing/consumer trust. my first IT job was with a publishing company in which ...

a. people get pissed due to breach of privacy
b. spammers harvest the email addresses and spoof or spam
c. people quickly unsubscribe from future lists
d. federal crime (canspam act i think?). since now your email breached privacy rules and others are aware of it.

e. most important: they sell the shit out of these lists. they make huge $$$ collecting and harvesting customer data and selling it to other companies, it happens all the time. so now the list is worth less $.
 
Really jroe? I have a big list of emails in a text file, who do you know that buys the lists legally? :)
 
Sometimes people have a bad day and make mistakes. I often think that too many people these days expect nothing but perfection when everyone is human. Some also think they are entitled to something everytime someone makes an accidental mistake and thus pretends to be more pissed than they really are. The emails were breached and being pissed isn't going to solve that.
 
I agree with a lot of the other responders on this one. He won't get fired. Human mistake. Won't cost company much.
 
Might not get fired, but it annoys the crap out of me when I get a big "reply all" w/o bcc. If any one of those accounts is tied to an infected machine ... I'm now a spam target. Thanks for distributing my email address without my consent, Mr. or Mrs. Duh I Dunno How 2 Do E-male.
 
What I don't understand is why EVERY email program out there does not now default to BCC?

Makes no sense whatsoever. 9 times out of 10, you don't need or want to spam everyone's email address on a reply.

The days of the public mail list are mostly over.

It's not a federal crime. CANSPAM is intentional distribution of emails against to the receiever selling products that basically do nothing. Privacy is mostly self-regulated and there's little laws that brings forth criminal charges especially on unintentional distribution of an email list.

maybe the person was already told they were being let go and did the price to embarass the company and then the cc instead of bcc - they might have thought WTF
 
only in US stupid people get peeved over stupid things like that. plus only in aUS, they expect retailers to honour the price eventhough clearly is a mistake.

I doubt the person who did the email incorrectly was also responsible for the pricing error. There could be two openings.

In other news, the G-Floor Floor Protector mailing list just got jump started!

Personally, I wouldn't care if my shopping email address went out like this for a mundane item. It already gets a crap ton of spam since I use it to shop online everywhere, and clearly it's been helpfully sold or stolen many times over already.
 
yawn. a couple of hundred emails? not even worth the trouble it would take to harvest them.
any good spammer could generate a couple of hundred million email addresses in the same time.
