XP Home SP2 issue

Ok I just built a new box and spent the better part of a day installing windows/patching. I used the windows update page and installed service pack 2. When I rebooted to complete the install I got a quick blue screen error, then automatic reboot. I got into safe mode and uninstalled sp2 and windows loaded right up. I tried reinstalling sp2 and the same thing, blue screen and reboot.
Now I dont know how to find out what the error mesage was because it flashed for maybe a second and then instantly started the reboot sequence. I remember reading somewhere a long time ago about a way to stop the boot process at every step, but I cant remember how to do it or where I read it.
A buddy of mine said that sp2 just doesnt like some computers, but I am really obsessive about having all of the updates and patches on my box.

try doing that before you install SP2

If it still gives you a BSOD+reboot after the first restart, tap F8 when windows is starting up. Since you have SP2 now, you should have the option to "Disable automatically restart upon system failure" or something like that.

That option is available in all SP levels of XP. It's in the System Properties.

What I would recommend, if your thinking of starting over fresh, is to slipstream SP2 into your XP CD. This is in the event none of the above links' advice works.

That's not what I said. The option to disable automatic restarts in the advanced options menu is only available on SP2, IIRC.

I'll try it one more time....that option has been available since XP was released, even when it was pre-SP1. You said, that now that he's up to SP2, he can use that option. He always could have used that option.

QFT. djnes is correct, it has always been available in XP no matter the SP level. I believe Windows 2000 has the option in the same location as well.

I said now that he has SP2, he should also have the option to disable it from the F8 menu if he still gets the BSOD+reboot after installing SP2 (in which case he would obviously be unable to get into the system properties).

you have that sweet machine and xp home? That breaks my heart. Anyway, follow the advice given here. I know I did have some issues with my antivirus software and this issue.
