i'm a computer science major. i just got my mac mini (first mac since 80s) yesterday. i would like to play around with xcode. do i need to (pay) and join ADC? that costs money. if so, are there any good coding solutions for osx.

secondly, how the hell do i get to a terminal? i found a console... that lets me read anything that has happened to my computer.

i'm kind of confused.

on the other hand, the midi keyboard, and m-audio mobilepre usb and garage band has been a little more impressive than i would have thought. i didn't get a chance to play too much, so the novelty is still overriding the utility...

thirdly, are there any nice, broad, mac osx websites that would just be useful for me to peruse? through googling i only find specific and irrelevant stuff. i'd just like a good way to learn a lot more about this OS.

answers to any of the above would b e helpful.....

love that link vinividivici ;) but yea.. /Applications/Utilities/Terminal all sorts of neat things in there too....I will give you a little advice about OS X and just call this Gigglebyte's rule in OSX....if **YOU** didn't create the folder or put it in a specific location...leave it alone...don't think..."hhhuuummmm there is an Applications folder and Applications (Mac OS 9)...I think I will change the Applications folder to Applications (Mac OS X)" and trust me it happens all the time and it is a bad thing as OSX likes certain things in specific locations....also for Xcode...it should be included on the DVD that came with your mini as that is standard for the OS...check the developer site out for student devs as I don't know if there is a cost associated with it or not
 
The XCode installer is located in /Applications/Installers/XCode Tools. XCode is a pretty nice application, although by the looks of it XCode2 will be quite amazing. If for some reason the installer isn't in that location you can grab it at http://developer.apple.com. Just sign up. You can sign up for free, but you do not get any developer "perks" unless you apply. That costs anywhere from $100 (student) to a few thousand (enterprise). If you are developing any java applications I'd highly recommend eclipse (http://eclipse.org) which runs perfectly on OS X. I'm personally just waiting for Apple to get JDK 5.0 out the door so that X-Develop will be ported to OS X. That's a pretty nice C# & Java IDE.
