I have an xbox 360 and am currently using HDMI on my 22" gateway monitor, which has a 16:10 resolution (1680*1050)

Every single game looks squooshed. circles look like elipses instead of circles.

I have come to find out that their is no remedy for this.

Is there any work around? Any help would be appreciated, I find it very annoying that they can't support 16:10.

Use VGA. VGA supports 1680x1050 (you get black bars I think, or its cropped)

are you sure there are no other work arounds? I don't quite understand why I bought a monitor with HDMI if the 360 can't even support it. Microsoft for the loss.

This is after I modded my av cable because I couldn't use HDMI and rca audio too.

Oh and the wireless controller constantly cuts out because the battery pack is loose.

I never had this many problems with a console before, and I've owned plenty...

Before you buy anything... what is the exact model of the monitor? Does it have 1:1 pixel mode?

EDIT: elite.mafia, do you ahve the HD2200/HD2201? If so, you don't need to buy anything.

Here's the manual to your monitor: (linked to PDF) http://support.gateway.com/s/Manuals/Monitors/8512837.pdf

Look for 1:1 pixel mode. It should be on Page 12/30 in the manual. It's under video options in the OSD (on sceen display), 1:1 setting should work for you.

EDIT2: NVM...scaling works for 480i only.

Apparently running it at 1080p seems to have solved the problem.

All the options you referred to are grayed out :(

I got my VGA cable from Target for $15 on clearance about 2 years ago....VGA supports 1336*768 just fine and all of my games look normal, same if I plug it into my Chi Mei 1680*1080 display.

hdmi would have been fine. just go to xbox console settings and select 1680 x 1050. you'll get black bars but circles will be circles.

i don't know why people keep saying that to get 1680 x 1050 you have to have vga. these people probably had to do this years ago when hdmi did not support 1680 x 1050. it does now. i know this first hand because only a few weeks ago i connected my xbox to a 22" with same resolution as yours with hdmi and used black bars.

as for vga - i did overpay for the microsoft but man i'm impressed with the colors & image quality. i may lose a lot of credibility here but i actually like my vga graphics better than hdmi (could be because my hdmi was a generic from monoprice). ms does rip you off but it is a one time thing and their cable is a lot better than the rest. now i connect my pc with hdmi (i use pc most of the time anyway) and xbox with vga.

luckily i connect the 360 to a wireless n laptop so i don't need to pay for overpriced wifi adapter. i'll hold off on the hard drive until natal comes out and the 250 gb becomes standard. then i'll overpay a second time by getting ms' proprietary hard drive (or a used one). if the price is under a 100 there's a much better chance i'll get it. installing games is nice - my xbox is so quiet - but each games takes up 8 gb of hard drive so my 20 gb is alread filled.

fortunately i'm not as sensitive as most people. so i'm not botherd if there's a slight stretch (lol, makes people lose 10 lbs on screen). so i set xbox to 1080p to fully use my monitor. i don't care for the black bars but they are there if anyone (most people) likes the perfect scaling.

^Not all sets support non standard HD TV resolutions through HDMI so that is why people are saying to get a VGA cable.

you can use a 10/100 switch and a WAP to gain the same functionality as the laptop for about $40 This is what I used previously to hook up my Xbox 360 and PS2 to the network. I got the wireless used for $23 and changed to that once I quit playing PS2 games and packed up the console. The WAP is now used in the basement to provide wireless since all of the contruction is steel studs.....
