X800XL Roundup

I'm looking into both of these as well.... I'd say that the 2 reasons you just listed (also from the review) would put the MSI on top. MSI's never been too shabby w/their gfx cards, so it should be a safe bet... Further, the MSI's currently cheaper than the PowerColor by $3 ;)

I noticed that MSI has a different type of adpater for their video features. Perhaps having a breakout box for the video functions is a better design. I haven't found many reviews on this card yet.

I have the Gigabyte SilentPipe version.

I removed the heatsink to see that they had the square metal riser still around the chip, ostensibly to prevent damage, but NONE of the thermal pad was in contact with the GPU!!!

I pried off the riser, put AS5 on and reattached the heatsink. It gets hot as hell, but I've had no problems with any games so far. I don't overclock, but I wanted the quietest solution possible. I paired the card with a Gigabyte nForce4 Ultra board with a passive chipset heatsink.

The only real downside is that if you have a BTX-style case like my Lian-Li V1000, the card visibly sags, even when securely seated, since the sink on the back of the card is far heavier than the front.

As a point of interest. NewEgg had the ATI AIW X800XL (Agp) and I'm quiet sure it was the retail version for $350 (after $50 instant rebate) 2 days ago.

Today (PST) in the morning it was $400....later on in the morning in went up to $405....and now...around lunchtime it's $430....and this is for the OEM version (no remote)

WTF is going on with NewEgg?

I would agree. I have bounced back and forth between a few sites and the prices keep changing. There doesn't seem to be much rhyme or reason to it, since they only change by a few dollars. At this point, the X800 Pro's are looking really good, since they will be in the low $270 soon. I think the vendors know the X800XL is a newer card and therefore, let's see how high we can raise the price.

Both the PowerColor & the MSI have been the same price for @ least 2wks now @ NewEgg. Hold out for one of those over ANY X800Pro, man... you'll be glad you did...

Yeah I would agree, get the X800XL...the X800 Pro is only 12 pipelines. There are some crazy prices on NewEgg for X800 Pro's ...they range from $275-409. Very weird...the average price is $370 which would put you in the 6800GT price range.

If you can afford the MSI X800XL...get it....it also has a 3 year warranty. Powercolor has a 2 year warranty unless you buy it from ZipZoomFly. ZipZoomFly warranty's it for the first year and Powercolor warranty's it for 2 more years after.

Since I'm not a big gamer, I thought the Sapphire x800 Pro at $275 was pretty good deal. But at that point, perhaps I'm better off getting either the MSI or PowerColor x800xl card. I definitely don't want to spend much more than that and I'm hoping for a pretty quiet card.

Regarding the MSI and PowerColor card, is there any advantage of the video breakout box that the MSI card has? I noticed that the MSI card is not powered and the audio connector is on the breakout box and not on the card. Can anyone shed some light on this?
