x2 overclocks

That seems tough for the majority of the chips. I've a "theory" that the manufacturing process for the X2's is similar to the Lancasters and that this could be why a lot of them don't OC too high.
 
got mine to 2.6ghz with the stock cooler....just upped the voltage.

idles just below 40C and around 60ish under load....

will see what happens with better cooling.....

thats for a 4200 tho.
 
I could probably hit 2.6, but it's not worth the heat. I can do 2.5 at 51C roughly, but I really dont want to go beyond 1.55v.
 
My 4800+ does 2.6 easy, and starts to become unstable @ 2.64. I believe ram to be my limiting factor, Mushkin HiPerf 1gig sticks. All the reviews basically state 220mhz is all I'm going to get out of them even if I relaxed the timings. Not surprisingly that's right where my system looses stability.

Edit: I should also mention this is without upping the voltage, 1.36v (according to CPU-Z).

Just do 1:2 to absolutely rule out the ram, find the highest stable freq, then figure out the math for optimal ram/cpu speed :p
 
Hmm. My 4400+ gets to 2.53 GHz at stock voltage (1.27v according to lmsensors), and 2.64 at 1.44v. At the latter speed it sits at 55C using a Zalman 7000CU. We'll see how it does when watercooled :)
 
Thanks for the tips and linkage. Honestly I haven't bothered trying to push my 1k in silicon. It's quite fast enough even at stock.

I've noticed some strangeness with voltage on the A8N premium. It seems to vary from 1.3-1.44v. Logically I'd say this was C'n'Q, but that doesn't make sense to me considering I've seen it pegged at 1.44v with ZERO load which is counter to what C'n'Q should be doing. I'm thinking Asus AIBooster application might have a few bugs; restarting the application resets the voltage and temps drop accordingly.
 
you're using the auto oc thing? definitly ditch it, i find they cause more problems than it's worth ;)
 
on stock voltage for 4400+ (11x230) no sweat. Can go higher with voltage bumps but have had not had time to stress test it (gets into windows @ 11x250)

If you mean the dynamic OC features, no. I specifically set the clocks I want using the standard setting in AI Boost. I'm not too interested in having a piece of software dynamicially create instability. :D Though I do like being able to OC without having to reboot, jump into BIOS, save, reboot, test, rinse and repeat. That is so 90's. Now it's all about insta-gratification.

overclocking is a thing of patience, if you haven't got any, forget about really maxing out your rig ;)

also, you don't really need to go into the bios to oc the cpu anymore, just use clockgen and a64tweaker :D

He is doing the same thing as clockgen and a64tweaker, just with a different program.
 
i wasn't aware that AIbooster could change ram timings and such? just the htt/fsb, voltage, multiplier
 
You can't change ram timings. Just like you say Eclipse only htt/fsb, voltage and multiplier.
 
I can get my 4200+ to 2.5ghz @ 1.4v and 2.6ghz at 1.5v but only with one core... I'm waiting for Epox to release an updated bios for my motherboard (9nda3+) so I can test the second core.

maybe its like the 875 and 865 with the pentiumD, its only seeing one core with an older bios or something.
 
I've been testing my X2 4400+ and it seems to top out a little over 2.6Ghz. So far i've been perfectly stable at 2.6Ghz w/ 1.45V. I tried for 2.8Ghz w/ 1.55V but it was a no go and i'm not trying any higher then that. I may see if i can get 2.7Ghz out of 1.5V. If i can't then i'll try for 2.6Ghz w/ 1.4V or less.
 
I got my X2 4400+ last week and am currently seeing what it is capable of. It's on a DFI nF4 SLI-DR mobo and has decent air-cooling (XP-90C, 50cfm 2400rpm 92mm fan, Arctic Silver 5) so it should overclock okay.

So far I've verified using two instances of Prime95 (one on each core), that the highest stable speeds are

1.35V (default) - 232x11 = 2.55GHz (44C core, 25C room temp)
1.40V - 237x11 = 2.60GHz (47C core, 25C room temp)

I haven't verified the following as exact maximums but they seem likely judging from how long Prime95 ran for before failing

1.45V - 242x11 = 2.66GHz (51C core, 27C room temp)
1.50V - 246x11 = 2.70GHz (est 55C core, 27C room temp)

I don't plan on pushing it any higher than 1.50V as 55C is approaching the 65C meltdown point :eek:
 
my 4200 has been a bit tricky

One core will do 2.7, no worries, the other craps out at 2.65.

This is with a Zalman CNPS 7700cu w/ Artic Silver 5.

This is at 1.6V, load temp gets to 55C max. Lower volts and P95 bombs out pretty quickly on the second core. (damn you second core, why can't you be more like the first core)

I am VERY tempted to take off its idiot hat and clean/reapply some thermal paste and then put the idiots hat back on. Or throw caution to the wind and just leave it off and see what it can do.....

tempted, very tempted.
