X2 4600 or E6400

Like the title says: E6400 or X2 4600? (Sorry if I put this in the wrong forum. Should it be in General Hardware?)
 
I have an AM2 4600+ with an M2N32 SLI Deluxe motherboard.. great combo if you ask me. .

If it was me buying i would go with the E6400, most benchmarks show them pretty similar but more room for OC.

if i was buying a new system i would definately get the e6400 but if you already have parts for the amd just go with amd. but x2 4600 < e6400
 
Well the E6400 starts life faster, and you only go up from there. The 6400 is clocked slower than the X2 4600, so I guess that means that it also consumes less energy (heat factor) for a given level of performance. Plus you know its good for a healthy overclock. Even if it only overclocks to 2.6 pr 2.7Ghz (like many 4600's do) you know its still going to kick the X2 4600's ass big time.

I was just in the market and was really headed for a Conroe, though I was looking at the E6300 (for price reasons). However I just happen to be at Fry's and they had a AM2 X2 4600 with motherboard for $230, which basically came out to a free motherboard...and still $20 cheaper than Newegg for just the processor. So that made my decision because I still had to buy new memory and a case and a video card. I'm willing to accept its a slower processor, but its still like in the top 10% of whats available, and I saved a good deal of money.
 
I'm thinking of going the E6400, but I'm still wondering. Should I hold off until more news about K8L?

If you are in the market to buy now, you may as well buy now.
 
If you got the AMD parts..939 board...DDR... Then I'd pick AMD

If starting from scratch then I'd get a 6400, well actually a 6300 for cheaper....I'll oveclock it myself instead of letting Intel do it and charge me xtra for the 6400.

Like someone said, if you're in the market now, buy now. If you're thinking of going AM2, most likely you need to buy all new (mobo, RAM and CPU). If you're doing that, I'd go with the E6400 instead. It's faster, cheaper and more future proof. If you're not looking to go to AM2 with the 4600+ and you have a 939 board but you're just wanting to upgrade to a faster chip and money is tight, then going with the 4600+ makes sense. All in what you want and/or need. What do you have now?

I say keep what you got, yours will be good enough for 3-5 more years.
Computers will be waay better in 3-5 years from now.

I upgraded to the X2 4600 from a XP2800. Definently noticable just putzing around Windows. WinXP takes like 10 seconds from reboot to desktop....sweet (not joking either).

I think that's your best bet. If you game, make sure you get at least a 7900GS level card, which is reasonably priced around $200. Have you thought about the mobo you're going to pair with the E6400? I was personally looking at the Asus P5B Deluxe, which looks like a very nice board.
 
slightly outdated but still a good rough guideline. man i love AMD, but if i had to buy a new system RIGHT NOW.. i don't even want to say it... you get the idea.
