Would this affect FPS?

I bought Norton SystemWorks and installed it.
I know it loads several background processes and puts that stupid thing in my toolbar, in addition to the one which Norton Antivirus runs. The worm-blocker has also hurt my bit-torrent too, from what I have seen so far.

What I'm asking, would having all these norton tools running hurt my in-game performance? If so, is there a similar product which does not completely take over your computer? I'm less than impressed.

If you have a lot of ram it won't hurt your game performance. You could just close Norton when you play a game and open it back up when your done same for bit torrent tell Norton to give it full acsess to the internet.

Nah dude, I tried!
You can disable norton antivirus but it still loads into memory at startup. And the system tray, I have not found a way to shut it down and it loads a bunch of crap at startup.

Press crtl-alt-dlt and manually end the processes whenever your about to start a game. How much memory do you have?

I got no idea which ones are norton processes though.
I have 1024 of DDR400 CAS 3.

avg antivirus. Free and effective, plus it does not take up a ton of resources on your PC.

I agree! But what can I replace it with?
Is there another similar system maintenance and virus scanner which isn't so system intrusive?

virus scanner: avast!
system maintenance: regsupreme pro, diskeeper 10, and ccleaner.

I think EndItAll 2 would be a good program for you, unloads all processes you deem unnecessary before starting up any programs.

I'd go with either AVG or Avast for antivirus. If you go to www.tweakguides.com his XP tweak guide is an awesome read to get the most performance out of your PC. He also explains how to get AVG running "tweaked".

And to answer your question... Yes, the Norton stuff will have an impact on your gaming performance. Not necessarily your FPS, but you HDD will spin more and your CPU will use precious cycles to do Norton stuff. Not to mention your RAM will take a hit. Get them TSRs terminated! :)

I have to agree with everyone here on Norton.

It isn't effective anymore and a complete resource hog.

Hop over to GenSoft and read all about it. They always have big discussions about av.

I personally use nod32 and love it. VERY efficient, and I get a ton of viruses in my [H] box daily, and also very resource friendly.

Most reviews I've read in the last couple of years seem to favor Trend Micro (makers of PC-Cillin). I finally dumped Norton this year and switched to Trend Micro Internet Security. Definitely less overhead than Norton and it seems to be doing its job.

Personally, I use Symantec Antivirus and don't have any problems with it. I do agree with everyone here though as it does impact your FPS. It's less than a 3-5% threshold which you can make up in overclocking (IF that's your thing). Be sure to run benchmarks before and after unstalling virus scanning software so at least you can say "Hey this is what I'm saving by going to software X".

Here are some tools that can help you tell who owns what startup/running application:
Autoruns
Process Explorer
The Big Dawgs always roll with Sysinternals.

You're noticing the same thing as those who have switched before you. Norton might be ok for a work rig, but I'll take my chances with AVG to skip the bloat. I tried PC-Cillin, that was a lot better than norton resource wise too. Norton may be the worst in that respect.

This is worth repeating.

If peak commit charge (task manager) < RAM it really doesn't matter what you have loaded in the backround.

Really? But doesn't it eat a few CPU cycles? Cause I'm CPU limited as it is (X800 XT with a crappy Athlon XP 3000+).

During startup and while it's being used, but not when idle (as many services are).

msconfig -> start-up...can probably stop the processes from loading at start-up.
