My friend has a laptop with wireless capability. She has no problems with it except she gets disconnected from aim or hotmail and it re-signs back on immediately. could this be an antenna problem? she's never far from her wireless router as she lives in an apartment. what are your suggestions? new nic card? is there something i can check before having to buy a new one? thanks in advance

I'd set up security and MAC filtering on the router. I'd also monitor the signal quality and strength when it disconnects. Some other device in her apartment could be causing a rift in the wireless signal causing connection flucuations.

Though she may or may not do so regularly, I would test out some games on it. It sounds like she's getting signal interference but you're only noticing it in programs that can't recover from a quick connection loss. Trying a game might help you to determine if this is the case because you obviously won't notice it while browsing.

Monitor the signal strengths. If you can, get a warscanning program and run it on the notebook. Cant think of any right now. Also keep the router away from those 2.4 ghz devices (especially 2.4ghz cordless phone base stations).
Try changing the channels.
Also consider updating the router firmware. I know on my netgear router there are known problems of conflicts with centrino wifi chipsets. It would cause it to disconnect every 45 minutes or something. The latest firmware was suppose to help remedy that but I dont know if it did.
