Alright, i've been googling and trying to figure this out for the longest time. Just built a new system and i want to [ut windows XP on it. When i go to install it, however, as its seting up i get error messages

SETUP CANNOT COPY THE FILE: XX.XX

its not just one one single file, but many files. I have no idea how to fix it. I've tried just using barebones system, or with both ram stick in, i've tried using the harddrives (80g WD 7200rpm) on other computers and they work fine. i cant get around the files either, which is a real pain in the ass. Any advice is definately welcome

edit: Specs - 2.6c, Abit IS7, 1Gig 3200 ram, Radeon 9800 PRO, Audigy, 16x DVD

I had this problem putting together some old parts for a new rig. Turned out to be the hsf wasn't sufficient enough for the cpu. Check to make sure it's seated properly. Also check to make sure all the IDE cables are secure as well as your ram. It couldn't hurt to run memtest and make sure your ram is running ok.

Well, as far as the HSF goes i've got the SNPS7000A-Cu which i thought was the problem at first so i double checked that that was set on there. As far as IDE cables, checked and rechecked those as well. I'll give the memtest a whirl and hope for the best

It's prob your cd drive or the winxp cd or a combo.. a slightly damaged cd trying to be read by a weak cdrom.

I would also use this to test hd and ram (memtest86) http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/

You can also get those tools on floppy disks.

can you install with this particular cd on a dif comp without probs? ...

Check your cd rom drive. Try a new one perhaps? Or maybe your cd is scratched?

CD works fine with my other computer, i have 2 XP cds, both of which are in mint condition. Both dont work for the Drive. Tried another drive that i know has worked for about 2 years flawlessly, but again it failed. I dont know what it could be, im gonna try to swap out IDE cables for some others, but i doubt that'll be the problem. Does anyone know if it could be the motherboards fault?

Have you tried switching ide cables?

Maybe it's your controller?

Well it since you may have missed a step lets take it from the top...

Try what MajorDomo suggested first.

Remove everything that isn't needed to install from a cd. Sound card nic etc.. Reset the bios options to default..

1. Ram - Use one stick only. Run memtest86 from a floppy or that cd I linked too. Let it run for a few hours at least.
2. HD - Again only use one. Check the jumpers. Then run the manufacturer's test program, from that cd or download the util from that manu's website. Run the full scan.
3. CPU - Make sure its getting good contact and there is paste on it. Check to see if the fan spins. I don't know what to recommend for testing the cpu from a floppy...
4. CDrom - jumpers.. swap it with another
5. CD - try the other disk
6. cables - swap these around too. If the hd test passes the cable connected to the hd should be fine.
8. PSU - try another one or buy a cheap tester from newegg.com (note I haven't used any of those testers so if you skip this step and if it's still not working you might be better off just ordering a new psu.)
9. Motherboard - Download and flash the latest bios.

Like Abbaddon said, the motherboard may have a faulty ide controler I suppose the best way to test for this is with the HD scan if it passes that ide header is ok. Try the HD on both to make sure the cdrom's header works.

Alright, i got XP installed. basically i swapped the ram and used 1 stick and had no problems once i did that (boy, i feel smart). But now, im pretty damned sure that my memory is bad. XP loads, but crashes after a minute or so with the stop error 0x0000004e. I googled it and it can be caused by a number of things, including bad ram. So im burning a start up cd with memtest on it and i'll get that going.
Thanks to everyone who'se been helping me so far, my other comp that i built didnt have this many damned problems but its a learning experience.
