Windows REPAIR Utility - HELP!!!

My system has been hanging a bit and I had to resort to a few "hard" boots. In doing this I must have hosed my system files. I get a message during bootup that says the system file is messed up and to run "repair" from the original XP disk.

When I do this and press "R" during windows setup, it just sends me to a DOS prompt at C:\Windows. I didn't see any commands to do a repair. WHAT DO I DO NOW?!

Can I just do an install "over-the-top" of the old windows, or do I risk losing everything? Can this even be done without re-formatting in XP?

Naturally I haven't been running system restore and I just finished doing my taxes on this machine!

What are you trying to accomplish in the console? Here is some more info on the console.

Yes, and no. :)

If you do an install over the top you will preserve MOST things, such as your registry, user profiles, and file system. That means you won't have to reinstall 3rd party software. However, it does replace the files with the versions of the files from the console. So if your running the console from a XPgold CD (original disks) you will be replacing all windows files with their original versions. That means they all need to be patched again (I'd recommend you slipstream XPSP2 on your install disk so there is less patching necessary after the fact).

Go here. Select your OS version, then select the Windows XP Pro(home) Repair Install.

 
Fixed! Had to almost do an install over the top. Never did get the screen that said "R" for repair, only the one that said "L" for delete windows and install. It did some maintenance and even then I wasn't sure it was fixed, seemed to want to continue to install everything. I rebooted out and all was fine.
