I always see people on craigslist selling Windows CD keys and other software CD keys for dirt cheap, they don't seem to be legit. Are they just generated keys or do these people actually acquire legitimate keys? I had a buddy a windows 7 key from them awhile go and he told me everything worked normal.

Can anyone please explain this to me?

They could be selling their old stuff.

Most keys that are sold for dirt cheap are ones that people get through their school or their employers technet or volume licensing subscriptions. They pay nothing for them thus the reason they sell them so cheap. Who in their right mind would sell legit $129 or $199 software for $15 or $25 unless it was stolen or not paid for?

You can tell because certain products are only sold through those specific channels and those are the keys being sold (Office Professional Plus, for example).

I just bought a 8.1 key the other day from g2a.com for ~$25, and I was able to upgrade to Windows 10 too.

No, but the keys could be deactivated one day leaving you with nothing.

Microsoft has only filed litigation against the absolute heaviest users of pirated software.

But this is another good example of how people get cheap software...

Polish company with access to significantly cheaper software licensing that probably is illegal to sell to US customers. It's the equivalent of buying Russian or Chinese Steam codes. Microsoft just doesn't enforce not using foreign keys it like Steam does.
