Windows Explorer error everytime I open one particular folder.

So just to be brief, I have 3 internal hard drives. One has Xp installed on it, and the other has vista. The third hard drive is my biggest capacity one and I keep music, and movies on it. Everytime I open the movies folder I get a "Windows Explorer encountered a error and needs to close message." If I put that window aside (that one that says the error message) I can still go through the movies folder just fine. I scanned the folder with norton antivirus and it finds nothing. I'm tired of this happening.

Anyone have any ideas as to what I could do or check? Thanks.

have you checked event viewer to see if it can shed some light on the issue?

I'll second this notion. At work, we have network shares from our FreeBSD fileserver set as network drives on our few windows workstations (most of the machines are macs). UNIX filesystems allow some characters that NTFS does not (colons and question marks, for example) and some of the files on the server have these characters in them. If you try to browse/open files with these characters it can make some really funny things happen in explorer.

I mention the network share part because, if all of your filesystems are local and windows-only, it would be almost impossible to make files with illegal characters. But if you have network shares or cross-operating-system filesystems you could potentially have it come up.

Could a bad codec be doing something? As in it's trying to get file info about a certain file and crashing? I wanna say I had a similar problem at one time... sorry can't help more. been a while back

qedit.dll = DirectShow Editing. That leads me to believe that thumbnail generation is causing it to crash, probably from having bad codecs installer. Does a video happen to be in that directory?

So I went into the folder and as soon as I did I right clicked and selected View, and then it was highlighted "Thumbnails" so I clicked on list quickly and everything seems good so far. No errors since I switched from Thumbnails in that folder. That's weird that that would cause a windows explorer error. Makes no sense. But whatever, thanks for the help. I was able to view it in thumbnails before with no problem, but ever since I added some more files to the folder is when it started happening.

Ha! Deng I was right and I freakin hate codecs!! now how to fix this.. ergh well since it's a group of files you added recently I guess you could list by date.. change the file extension on most recent ones and pop back into thumbnail mode and see if it crashes. Keep changing them till you track down which file it is. I guess if it's not a big deal just leave it as is since it sounds like the videos play fine, they just have issues with explorer. I've had some files not play in MediaPlayer and had to use MediaPlayer Classic or another to play em but I haven't had the explorer crash issue latelly.

Have you tried moving everything out of the folder, then deleting it and creating a new folder. Drop files back in one at a time, in the view mode that you want, and keep checking to see if maybe one of the files is causing the problem.
