I am soon going to be building another computer and I will be trashing this one. How would I go about getting the CD key from my current system (have the CD's but no key) so I can reuse it in the new computer.
Is it illegal?

There are plenty of programs, such as MagicJellybean that will show you the key. Majorgeeks.com has them.

As for as legality, it depends. If this is a legal license, and is only in use for one computer, it should be fine. If it's an OEM license, it may not activate online, and you'd have to do it over the phone.
 
Google " System Information for Windows"
Download and install.
This will show your Windows key and much more.
As for the legalities concerned - that depends on what version of Windows you own.
 
Use Belarc. It is free and you can do a scan of your PC and it will give you the keys to all programs that use them.
