will this memory work?.....

doing a build with the E6300 w/ ASUS P5B DELUXE/WiFi mobo for a friend & was wondering if anybody has this memory: Geil 2GB KIT & will it work good in order to get me @ 3.0ghz when oc'ing the E6300?.....he doesn't want to spend a lot on memory....especially on a corsair 2gb kit.....was also wondering instead of 2gbs can I use the 1gb version & still oc it up to 3ghz?.....will value select ram like this one work: Corsair 1GB Kit

here is the rub, the 6300 has a locked multiplier of 7, this means to reach 3.0 GHz (which should be very do-able) you will need a FSB of 3000/7 = 428.5 call it 429 MHz FSB. you now need to check the motherboard you are thinking about, ( download the manual from the manufactures web site) and check the memory dividers.

if the lowest memory divider is 1 to 1 (sometimes shown as 2:1 since its DDR) the memory will be running 429 x 2 = 858 MHz and thats a heck of a overclock on PC4300 533MHz ram but for PC6400 800MHz ram its not so much. IMO pc6400 rated 5 5 5 12 at 800 would probally outperform pc4300 rated 4 4 4 12 becuse you wil have to loosen the timings so much to get the PC4300 to operate at +800 MHz.

1 GB will be fine, can always add another gig later, there is really very little reason to go above 2 GB so as long as the board has 4 memory slots you are good.


I am sure a bazillion people will post that their xxx 533 ram will easisly go to yyy MHz etc. etc. good for them. The question is, will the sticks you buy get you where you want to go and what kind of risk do you want to take that the memory can sustain the kind of speeds you are looking for.
