Hi,

I've recently purchased a Q6600 and am using the stock cooling solution that came with the CPU. I am wondering if I should spend a little more money to get a better cooling solution.

The main reason would be the noise reduction. Better cooling would be also appreciated.

Also, when I remove my stock heatsink, how much cleaning is there required?

it all depends on the condition of the cooler. Clean it as best you can obviously.

Stock coolers on these intels are sufficient. But if you want, the sure, add a better cooler.
 
In my experience, while the stock coolers work fine for C2Ds, they seem to be a little insufficient for C2Qs, especially if you're planning on doing any tweaking whatsoever.

I guess if you're running everything at stock speeds, you could get by well enough though.
 
You can certainly try, but if you want to do some serious "extreme" overclocking, its reccomended that you go aftermarket..
(And some MX-2 thermal paste too!)

I myself have a scythe mine, and while it is ok, it gets the job done, it is not the best, and its hardly reccomended by anyone here.
