will it POST with no CPU?

My question is: what will a mobo do if you try to boot with no CPU? I know it won't finish post, but will it try to start then fail or just never initialize? My specific motherboard is an epox 8k5a2+ (kt333 chipset) but I suspect that doesn't matter.

I ask because this motherboard appears to have died on me. It absolutely refuses to post no matter what. The fans spin up, but it will not even start to post. There's a digital display on the board that shows at what stage in the boot process it is, but this just stays blank. I've unplugged everything leaving only the essentials and still nothing. I've even unplugged the CPU, which led me to my question because I'm pretty sure it didn't do what it was supposed to.

I thought that the bios had gone bad on me(the last time I'd managed to make it do something, I got a CMOS checksum invalid then it wouldn't boot). But, I got a new chip from the manufacturer, pre-flashed, and still nothing. The only other thing i can think of is a chintzy power supply(admittedly it is a cheap power supply) but the fans spin up so I don't see how this could be the problem. Thanks for any help.

I wouldn't be so certain of the BIOS chip. Even if your CPU was dead/removed, you should still get a display on the POST code LEDs. To continue any further though, you are going to need another motherboard to test your CPU in. If your CPU tests good in another board, your board is bad.

The BIOS simply contains instructions for the CPU to execute.

So yeah, it will not post without a CPU.
