Been awhile since I posted, hopefully I didn't miss a thread addressing this.

Anyway I just bought and installed my E6400. I noticed when I installed it that it was running pretty hot, like 55C idle and It would get up to 72C using the Intel Thermal Tool. So obviously I thought I installed the HS/Fan wrong. I have now reinstalled the HS/Fan about 6 times and it is still running REALLY hot.

I changed the Vcore to 1V and the temps went down to a workable level (stock speeds). The odd thing is that one core is running at 34C while the other is running at 40C. This makes me think there is still something seriously wrong with the way the HS/Fan is sitting because of the temp difference. I'm using some Radioshack Thermal Paste and have some Artic Silver 5 on the way. My friend who has the exact same mobo as mine runs at temps 10-15 degrees below mine having overclocked his proc 800mhz using the stock HS/Fan, so obviously something is wrong.

Any tips/suggestions for installing the HS/Fan or diagnosing the problem?

Well, first off, the obvious... Hows your case cooling?

2ndly, I've heard there are some quality control problems with the IHS on the Conroe processors... If it's loading that warm, and you can't fix it... it might be time to RMA the processor.

Case cooling seems good Using the Antec Sonata II, Tried with and without the stupid cooling chute thing (fans installed in it) and there doesn't seem to be much difference.

Right now its @ 1.15 Vcore running 300 FSB, using orthos prime Its at 62C Core Temp under full load, which I hear isn't horrible from other threads I was reading although I dunno something still seems a miss. Seems like I should be running cooler for what I'm at. It's Idleing @ 43ish. Is this more normal?

My Friend is running his E6300 @ 400FSB and getting core temps @ 57, I just dunno :/

Maybe I'm just reading to much into it and should invest in a 3rd party HS/Fan.

The stock cooler Intel provides is a joke.

Your temps are pretty much normal for stock cooler AFAIK.

If you want lower temps, then you'll need a real HSF.

You aren't pushing in the pins and rotating are you? That has got quite a few people.
