People overclocking because they enjoy a performance gain, You ask why you would want to overclock a beast system? Well, Its the same reason as why does Intel and AMD keep comming out with faster processors or why does ATI and Nvidia keep getting faster VPUs? Because people want faster systems, you can never have a fast enough system. Period. If you can get faster then just increase the res, details, etc.. on games and you see it is much more fun to play and without lag. It also gives a sense of accomplishment in the user and bragging rights, who doesnt like to brag? :p
 
OCing is more addicting than crack.. once u OC u wanna do it just a little more.. then a little more.. then even more.. you just cant stop.. and its just too much fun

i also agree completly with the person who mentioned that you cant be a true hardware enthusiest if you dont OC.. very good point and exactly what i was thinking

the main reason i OC, however, is because i paid $88 for a cpu that i have running at over 2.4 GHz.. a 3700+ for <$90 is a good deal in my book.. lets see someone go out and buy a cpu that runs stock at 3700+...and then tell me how much it would cost ya (if it was possible of course)

I do it just to see how far things will go. It is a case of innate curiousity. That and, I mess with every last thing, I buy. It is the need to improve what you have, without paying more.
 
because a $100 chip that is running faster than a $300 chip is awesome.
 
well i OC for braging rights really
it's to damn kewl to pay 90 dollars for a chip that can OC the same and even more than a 300 dollar chip can do
also it's a pride thing to. i mean after you got done building your machine and tweaking and ocing it. your damn proud of yourself for the work and time you just put in to a machine that cost you less than someone going out and buying a machine that is stock speeds with the best stuff money can buy. and also you can beat them out in most or even all benchmarks and FPS

and yes it's very addicting more than crack itself. but guess what. it's safer and your not going to die from a overdose. inless you touch the 110v leads in the PSU

The original poster assumed that all enthusiasts buy the top of the line, when a person like me buy $20 dollar components that can run the newest games out there... I can do Halo in 1024by768 with everything on and it pwns... I spent $20 dollars on this gf 2 gts and it owns ass, might I add, I OCed it and it gave me a good 15 fps + head way, without that OC I couldn't run Halo smoothly very well and thus wouldn't be able to max out my performance... I'm the guy with the Eklipse and a super charger as well as a turbo. Ownage, for damn cheap might I add.

Really, I did it simply because it's there, when you get down to it. I'm usually stuck on a tight budget, so try to max out what I get for my money with whatever I do. I think the person who mentioned gambling also struck a chord with me, as it feels something like gambling when you're allowed to go through reams of information from other people about their experiences and the habits of the 'dealer' at a given game. So getting a chip and finding out it's one of the good ones is a nice, warm, fuzzy feeling. Besides that, I also somehow manage to derive some fun from simply seeing how things work and tweaking them. There's pretty much nothing new to add by now, after those nice little treatises that covered every other base. :(

I've got a PC built from leftovers that I run at work, I overclock that so that I can run programs faster (I work in software support for loads of anti-virus / firewall / content security products). I want a fast PC so that I can have all these programs running in the background and not have the PC grind to a halt.

Re the above points....
1. My PC is stable, 1800+ @ 2101MHz, and by stable I mean Prime95 plus other programs in background:
Torture Test ran 63 hours, 50 minutes - 0 errors, 0 warnings.
2. Work is quite warm already, one extra PC wont harm that. The Energy bill goes to work, no problem there ;)
3. Additional cost - not a lot at all, mostly built from spares and the only OC component was the heatsink which cost £6.
4. Good point, I only do this on work time so I don't mind too much though;)
 
I do it cause I have an attention span of 3 year old and If I am not doing something I will do something I really shouldn't do. Idle hands are the devils hands is what I say.

As far a social life, I have one except its a different one from the Social norms that our society has defined as Normal Social life.

I don't go to bars, I go to lans, I don't go to Parties, I go to conventions, I don't hang out with friends at their house, I got to a Firing range or Play Paintball and Airsoft.
 
for me it was simple.. i wanted a 3200+... but couldnt afford it.. so i got an abit nf7-s (for $130 CAD), 512MB ddr400 (samsung retail $95 CAD), and a 2500+ (for $130 CAD)... installed w/ stock HSF, booted up... switched to 11x200, now i have a 3200+, running stable... and saved $330CAD... so basically... my new board/chip/ram... cost me the difference in price between the 2500+ and the 3200+. Its like amd handed me $330 in cash :p
