WHY?! (another dead card thread)

Damnit! My 6600GT appears to have died just now. I was trying to sleep and just couldn't bring myself to for some reason, so I got up and walked over to power up my comp, and "beeeeep beepbeep". So I reseat everything and try it again. Same result. I removed the molex to try to run it in the low power mode it reverts to, and same thing.

So I start walking around thinking maybe the agp slot on the board went bad, and decided to try the 5200 I had laying around with the noisier-than-it-should-be fan and everything works fine. Man I hope the card is still under warrenty.

I'm probably going to try a few more things before giving up on the card, but after the "innocence lost" shock wore off I can't say I'm too suprised. It's like waking up to another murder in a bad neighborhood.

[edit] hey by the way, what's ATI's equivilant to the 6600GT agp? (exact same or better, I don't want to fall back if possible)

That sucks. The 1 better is the x800. Get the xtpe if you can get it cheap.

The agp x700pro or 9800xt are about the speed of a 6600gt. They are a tad slower in most games, but nothing really noticable. Really though, you might be better off just getting another agp 6600gt. I don't think the agp 6800 is worth the $180 they are sellig for now, specially when you can buy the 6600gt for $120 AR or less. Most agp 6800 dont mod (1 of 3 for me) and they are not much faster than the 6600gt. You should be able to buy a used agp x800xl, or x800pro for under $200 pretty easily if you want more preformance. The rumor mill is saying the 6800gs is coming to agp in a couple weeks. That will be a great card for the money if it hits the $200-220 range.

my 9800xt had np keeping up with a full piped 6800u but it was a golden ES ati card that oc'd like mad so be safe,buy a cheap x800 or so and go forth kicking ass!

Well, I can't get a refund - mwave's policy is that after 30 days you have to go through the manufacturer. Luckily EVGA's rma process was lightning quick - approving a replacement/repair less than 12 hours after my rma submission (on a sunday no less).

If it fails again though I'm going to have to try for a refund regardless of what the sites say.

13,000 3dmark 03's 5772 05's, 23,000 01's, if thats bad performance for the card, boy is my x850 going to be impressive... he had the card at unreal clocks... like say.... 800 mhz core and 1.2 ghz memory.. maybe the exact clocks will shed some light... the video card was just shy of my card at ultra clocks

maybe trey has the bench screen shots...this is why you should publish/keep your benches bitchbreaker

Well, a 9800XT that runs 800mhz core and 1.2Ghz memory isn't your average 9800XT. That's like double the rated speeds on both. I just don't see how that's possible even with it being "golden". Especially since the 9800XT didn't use GDDR3 memory, but regular DDR which doesn't clock that high.

ok, so even if this were true (and i dont believe it until you actually get some proof) and you had a 150nm, DDR 9800XT running at 800mhz core and 1.2ghz memory, why the fuck would you recomend the card to someone else based on hte fact that it, running at just about twice its rated speed, could keep up with a 6800U? for all practical purposes, its not feasable. not even x800 series cards can hit 800mhz very often, if ever, and theyre on a lower fabrication process

i think ATI wouldve had some press release about a 9800XT hitting 800mhz core. they did for 1ghz, why not 800 on a 413mhz stock core?

'course, a 9800XT at 800mhz would keep up with a 6800U at 400mhz. the 9800 has 8 pipes, and double the clockspeed, while the 6800 has 16 pipes and half the clockspeed, for any practical purpose, theyll be about the same... not taking into account any vertex shader differences they might have. the 9800 would also have a higher bandwidth to work with, both are 256bit, but the 9800 would have 100mhz on it. that being said, 1.2ghz on GDDR is also just about impossible.

showing that a 6800NU can hit those kinds of speeds does not prove your 9800XT did, the 6800 uses ram that is rated for higher speeds than the 9800xt did.
